6 Things People Don't Always Tell You About Studying
1. you ace tests by overlearning. you should know your notes/flashcards/definitions basically by heart. if someone asks you about a topic when you’re away from class or your notes and you can answer them in a thorough and and accurate answer, then you’re good, you know the material.
2. if you don’t understand something, it will end up on the test. so just don’t disregard and hope that this specific topic won’t be on the test. give it more attention, help, and practice. find a packet of problems on that one concept and don’t stop until you finish it and know it the best.
3. sometimes you just need that Parental Push. you know in elementary school, they would tell you “ok now it’s time for you to do your homework! you have a project coming up, start looking for a topic now!” ONE of your teachers might be like this. be thankful for it and follow their advice! these teachers are the best at always keeping you on track with their calendar. if not a teacher, then have one of your friends be that person that can keep you accountable for the things you promised you would do.
4. you just need to kick your own ass. seriously. i know it sucks and its hard to study for two things at once. BUT. I DONT CARE IF IT’S HARD. you need to do it and at least do it to get it over with because you can’t keep putting things off. If you do, you will eventually run out of time and you will hate yourself. force yourself to do it. i made myself sign up for june ACT even though there’s finals because if i didn’t, i probably never would. like do i think i’m gonna be ready in one month? probably not, SO I BETTER GET ON IT AND START STUDYING!
5. do homework even if it doesn’t count. if you actually try on it, then you will actually do so much better on the tests, it’s like magic.
6. literally just get so angry about procrastinating that you make yourself start that assignment. I know how hard it is to kick the procrastination habit. I have to procrastinate. So I make myself start by thinking about my deadlines way early. I think, “oh i have a presentation in three weeks (but it really takes 2 weeks to do), i’ll be good and start today.” when that doesn’t happen, you say you’ll do it tomorrow, and this happens for like the next four days. I get so mad at myself for not starting when i am given a new chance to do so with every passing day. By that time, you actually have exactly how much time you need for it AND you were able to procrastinate the same way you usually do ;)

some chemistry notes I took in preparation for the chemistry subject test over the summer
BTW I need some help in deciding how I wanna take this account, so I created a little survey and it would mean a lot to me if you took a few minutes to complete it :) link is here

● Seize time opportunities. If I have 15 minutes until your next class, I sit down and do homework in the hallway. If I have a long commute, I’ll do flashcards. This works because you most likely won’t have anything else to do anyways, so it’s easier to get your work done.
● Start something. When I get a lab report assignment, the first thing I do is pull up the directions and at least start the cover page and pull up some research links. It takes 5 minutes but it gets the ball rolling and makes it more likely that you’ll finish what you started.
● Auto-mode. When I procrastinating, it’s usually because I’m too busy thinking about what I’m going to do. Instead, I like to pretend I’m in “auto-mode” and just get started as fast as I can. auto-mode means shutting out distracting thoughts or pleas to watch one more funny cat video and forcing your hands to open your textbook. Works every time.
● Personally, creating time schedules don’t work for me because if I fall out of time, the whole schedule falls apart and I usually give up. Instead I use time games. I’ll tell myself something like “work as hard as you can until 11:00 sharp and if you finish, you can have a break”. This is great for developing self discipline because it’s in the moment so you can be more realistic and flexible.
● I don’t like writing down earlier due dates in my planner because it’s confusing so instead, it’s good to have some sort of mental rule. for example, my mental rule is to finish everything at least two days before the due date. following through with that will keep you on track.
● Do a little bit every day. If you have a big project, chip at it within a week rather than stressing out 2 days before it’s due. the same goes for studying for an exam. if you review lecture notes and attend office hours after class + work on flashcards throughout the week, then do a final review at the end, you’ll be well prepared and won’t need to cram. It’s a good habit and you won’t get stressed. Two birds with one stone.
● Use mornings too. I’m not really an early bird, but using mornings to get some work / chores done is great because it gives you a productive start to the day, which makes you feel proud of yourself for knocking out half of your tasks in the a.m.
a. Lay out your lecture notes / worksheets on the table the night before and open your work tabs on your computer so they’ll be the first thing you see when you turn on your computer.
b. Put your computer far away from your work space and go to sleep.
c. When you wake up, the first thing that you’ll see is your ‘paper’ work, so get it done first. then start on your ‘screen’ work (you’ll be less likely to get distracted if you do your ‘paper’ work first). when you open your laptop the first thing you’ll see are the work tabs you opened the night before. Your job is to go on auto-mode and get started.
Good luck with self-discipline. You’ll do great. -thoughtscholar
hi~ here’s a post of my notes on beverage science and technology :D it’s not the best but the sunlight really hit a nice spot so i decided to take a shot and here it is after a couple of filters HAHAH 🤣i don’t often posts on my studyblr nowadays because i lost the motivation and energy to really just open my account and see my timeline /:
previously, i think i might have mentioned that i was going through my o-levels and now!! i’m done with it!!!
currently, I’m attending a polytechnic to get my diploma in food science and technology :3 this is something that i was really looking forward to because food science and technology was my first choice and i managed to get in!! 🔬🍎🍌
i’m really enjoying myself so far in this whole new experience (of course i’ve also felt disappointment with my first few examinations because i did really 😫🤮) with new friends and the new school environment (:
I hope everyone who spent their time to read my post (which is amazing wow thank you) is fine and well.

How to take effective lecture notes.
Go to the lectures, please! Okay so I know this is probably one you were all expecting, but you can’t rely on lecture slides to get you through all of your classes. Listening to the information and added info from the lecturer helps you to understand the topic on a much deeper level than simply just reading and re-writing it.
Focus. I don’t know how many times I’ve been in a lecture and my brain’s started drifting towards my phone or sometimes even to dreamland. Get enough sleep. Put your phone and any other technology away and just listen. This is the purpose of going to the lecture! The professor is most likely going to highlight the main points of the topic and the topics you should focus on for upcoming exams.
Write what you hear, not what you see. If your lecturer uploads the lecture slides online, try to write only a rough outline of the content and your lecturers comments on certain topics. Later you can add the content which is on the slides either by using post-its or by rewriting out the notes.
Use bullet points instead of paragraphs. Bullet points help you to write shorter, more precise sentences which contain only the information you need. I find that when I use paragraphs, I tend to write all of the information instead of focusing on the lecture and finding the information I need instead.
Don’t highlight in class, leave it until afterward. If you’re like me and like pretty highlighters, do not give in to the urges. Leave it until after the lecture, then go back, re-read your notes and highlight/underline anything you feel is necessary. This way you won’t be highlighting unnecessary information and it won’t look like a unicorn just threw up all over your notes, maybe.
So these are all the methods I use to take effective, useful lecture notes. This isn’t about making your notes pretty, because I find that trying to make notes pretty in a lecture only works to my disadvantage. I miss out on information and I’m not as productive as I could be. I hope this helped you out! Good luck to everyone heading back to school!

Do you have any advice for self-studying? I saw that Virilitasa answered a question about that and I was curious about what advice you'd give! Thank you :)
For those curious, @virilitasa ‘s post can be found here. She covered a lot of what I would have said and I also wrote a similar post on the specifics of “how” recently. I won’t cover those points.
Many people find self-studying difficult to stick with because they lack outside structure. So you need to create that structure yourself. Depending on how you generally get work done, you might take one or more of these general approaches:
Schedule a specific time each day to study
e.g., 6am before classes, after dinner, etc.
Break down the content into exactly how you’ll study ahead of time
e.g., read chapters X-Y, make Quizlet set, do practice problems, etc.
Create specific, small goals for yourself
e.g., finish one chapter a week, learn 5 new words a day
Set slightly random reminders on your calendar
Regular phone reminders are easy to ignore! Maybe pick 3 random days to check if you’re sticking to your plan or set a time to review each week.
Decide on an amount of time to study each day
e.g., 2 hours at any time instead of always 8am-10am
Test yourself at regular intervals
Reading and taking notes alone is NOT enough to effectively learn
See the other posts I mentioned for more specifics.
Hope that helps!
BONUS TIP: If you’re learning something for yourself, you don’t need to study everything that’s in the book.
If a chapter or section is irrelevant to what you’re trying to learn, skip it. This goes for languages, especially. You can always go back to those skipped sections if you need them. But maintaining discipline and motivation is key to self-study, so keep the content relevant is major.
it took me a while to find how i was going to phrase this masterpost. truth is, we all started in the studyblr community at some point and we’ve all known the struggle to get reblogs or to even find friends. unfortunately, this shouldn’t be the issue, the purpose of this, is to improve your grade, show your work, give tips and make friends with people all around the world sharing your passion. i guess this masterpost applies to new studyblrs or just studyblrs that sometimes struggle to find a spot in this huge community.
○ followers don’t matter, friends do.
at the beginning, it might seem impossible to find followers, even more friends. i can talk for myself because i know that i used to get so upset when i’d see people unfollowing me. i didn’t know how to fit in even if i tried my hardest. if you’ve ever been in this case, what i’d recommend, is to send “ask” to your favourite accounts, even in anons. send them ask or even message them if you’re not too shy. it would at least give you someone to talk to and you could ask questions on how to improve your studyblr, and maybe even make friends. one thing that also works is tags if you struggle to get reblogs. for example, mine is #heyaly but basically every studyblr has one and that’s one way to show your posts to the world. once you’ve done that, i’m pretty sure you would at least have found a friend. and that’s what matter in this community. followers are just a number, what you need is supportive friends!! (and my door is always open if you want one)
○ it’s okay if you can’t afford stationery.
this is so important, to everyone out here, cute stationery is cool but that’s not everything, it doesn’t define who you are. to be a studyblr, you have to share your passion, it should never be a race to see who can get the brand new notebooks or liners. you’re beautiful and perfect with just a pencil and a sheet of paper as long as it brings you happiness.
○ you don’t have to work all the time.
big cliché. as if, we studyblrs, were working all day, all night. it might seem to be the truth because we’re all from different part of the world. but learn to treat yourself. watch a programme, relax, go outside, do something else that you enjoy. you don’t live to work!
○ give tips you follow.
writing this sounds stupid but i know for a fact that you always want to give the best to impress people. but masterposts are important because you make it out of your own experience. what the internet says does not matter, what we want is to know how you do things. that’s what make a masterpost so special. it’s okay not to drink ten gallons of water per day (please don’t do that) or to sleep twelve hours per night, we’re all different and that’s what makes us perfect in our own ways.
basically,
JUST BE YOURSELF AND THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE ✿

I’ve pulled three almost-all-nighters in this past week and I am living my best life
I’ve been so busy with working (I picked up my paycheck today and omg ok all-nighters were worth) and studying for midterms and writing a bunch of apps
Also I had a fantastic hospital shift today and it’s becoming very bittersweet because I will be saying goodbye to the Geriatrics clinic and my volunteer bud very soon :(
