Happy anniversary, Neptune! Discovered in 1846, Neptune showed off its many faces to the Hubble Space Telescope in 2011, a date that marked 165 Earth years (and one Neptunian year) since the planet’s discovery. That’s right, it takes 165 of our years for Neptune to make one lap around the Sun.

These snapshots were taken at roughly four-hour intervals, offering a full view of the planet over its 16-hour rotation. The images reveal high-altitude clouds composed of methane ice crystals in its northern and southern hemispheres.

Absorption of red light by methane in Neptune’s atmosphere gives the planet its distinctive aqua color. The clouds are tinted pink because they are reflecting near-infrared light.
