Another piece of the Beta Pictoris puzzle has fallen into placeâa newly discovered giant planet!
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered a third exoplanet orbiting the nearby young star. This artist's concept shows the complete system, including the newly discovered Beta Pictoris d (right).
The discovery was made using an instrument on Webb that simultaneously images and maps chemical contents of a specific area of the sky. In an area where the team expected to see a smooth spectrum from light bouncing off dust, the team instead saw telltale signs of a gas giant exoplanet: https://news.stsci.edu/4aJ6IVl
