Charles was a man of peace and had a benevolent attitude towards poor distributing even food to them during a famine. He quarrelled though with a powerful local Erembald family and the count was eventually hacked down by latter’s knights while praying in a church. The murder of the count enraged other nobles and Charles’ subjects and they avenged him by arresting key members of the plot and torturing them to death. Charles’ good deeds were later recognized by Catholic church and he was beatified in 1882.
