i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

I’m realizing that the people most likely to be fired or pushed out are the people whose work involves like, creating healthy, democratic, and connected communities. Which makes me very vulnerable. Given, I think I’m protected more than some because (a) my boss and my boss’ boss are both fairly protective of me and are both well-regarded enough that it would cause a massive shitstorm if I was fired without their agreement, and (b) my literal job description happens to be such that there’s nothing they could say about the criticisms I’ve had that I couldn’t argue is literally my job to do. Like, if they want to fire me for being vocal and speaking up about our new authoritarian leadership dynamic, have fun; my job description is to literally fight that. They cannot legally get rid of me without making the claim that democracy is no longer their work. Good luck with that.
A thing that has happened to me now three times in the past six months: I talk to an administrator about an issue. They don’t answer my question. I ask again and their answer is misaligned with the question. I try to clarify. They ignore me. I ask again. They get pissed at me and throw a manual at me and are like “fucking learn.” (Notably, in none of these cases is said thing for me to learn a part of my job responsibilities.) I point out to them that I have in fact read the manual and that my question is not answered. They finally get exasperated enough to look. They realize I’m right and actually it’s an error on their side of the system. They do not apologize at all. Rinse and repeat.
nice outfit LOSER!!! 2001 called, they
hold on.
oh my god
I’ve multiple meetings today that were potential train wrecks, where in every single one, it turns out there was a simple misunderstanding and people walked away much less stressed, so I guess that’s a rare win.
[id. A twitter post by @/Bennieeexyz Jury duty letter came addressed to my cat. Not a mistake. "Felix Martinez" - that's his full name according to his vet records. My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now. Called the county clerk. Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty. Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons? Me: Yes, but he's a cat. Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county? Me: He's a legal cat. Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption. Me: He can't file anything. He has paws. Clerk: You can file on his behalf. Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat." Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons." Me: What's the medical reason? Clerk: He's a cat. Me: That's not a medical condition. Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving. Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later. "Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement." Took the letter to my vet. Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty. Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty? Me: Excellent question. No good answer. Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten. Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve? Vet: On what grounds? Me: He's a cat. Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings." Me: Perfect. Sent it in. Got another rejection. "Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court." My roommate thought this was hilarious. Roommate: Felix is going to jail. Me: This is serious. Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens. Decided that was actually the only option left. Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters. Checked in at the courthouse. Clerk: Name? Me: Felix Martinez. Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix? Me: Yes. Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat. Me: I've been saying that for six weeks. Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption? Me: I filed three. All rejected. Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation? Me: Twice. Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this. Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me. Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote? Me: You tell me. Supervisor: This is a data error. Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out. They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience. Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry. Me: Appreciate it. Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted? Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats. Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card. For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was. Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud. Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent. Roommate: That's what they all say. Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now. Fitting end to his legal career. end id]

I just counted - I have chaired a total of 56 completed dissertation committees.
Would I be selling part of my soul to work at a foundation, a type of organization that on principle I think shouldn’t exist? Is taking that kind of job better than the alternatives? Many such questions right now.
Well. The firings have started. Time for me to take looking for other jobs more seriously.
And the firings continue. Just learned about two more.
And then on top of that, I hit my tipping point in this meeting where I was learning this because not only have they fired all these people, they fired the fucking dog. (We have a campus dog. Her handler was just fired and since she’s his dog, we no longer have her.)
bus is my friend. shes no train but shes trying her hardest in a world that hates her

This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.
OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.
And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.
One dumb thing I’ve done a few times now is that I’ve bought social games they’ve played on Smosh Games (e.g., Moose Master, Chameleon), with the thinking “Oh, this would be fun to do with a group of friends or colleagues,” fully forgetting that (1) I am a part of zero friend groups and (2) my colleagues also don’t like, hang out. We play a game together maybe twice a year and each time I have to pick something that involves as few rules as possible or else people feel too constrained.
