evan suppresses his desires, emotions, and fears. he no longer even knows whether he was ever religious or simply indulged requests. but then barty appears, clearly rebelling against religion, wanting to anger his father.

they talk for the first time after one of barty's pranks, when he drew a huge dih on the church wall like graffiti. evan laughed and said he understood him and that he thought he hated the church.

two years pass, and now they are the closest to each other. but they often fight, because evan can't figure out what he wants and who he believes in, having never seriously thought about this before barty appeared.

they planned to run away together, but during one argument, evan said he couldn't just abandon the church he had once dedicated his entire life to. then barty ran away alone(he's still just a typical impulsive teenager yk)

then evan dies at an early age, but they never met after that fight. but his words, his beliefs based on the bible, will always remain in barty. it's not tangible, but every decision barty makes is based on the words evan has ever spoken.
