Honestly, it may not look bright for Burnsmithers fans. Despite 30+ years of people wanting them to hook up and to just be a couple despite the chemistry the show might actually ditch it for Michael who is the new boyfriend of Smithers. I am at an impasse. On one hand Smithers might get someone (else) who understands him, but on the other hand, 30+ years of lore and character/relationship building is going to be tossed out of the window. As someone who is queer myself along with others who looked at them as an item, something comparable to Marge and Homer over the decades, sometimes it feels like there is something on deaf ears here. Then again, I might just be so dramatic about this and nothing might not come of it at all. We might get something really good. I am unsure what this will mean for this blog updating anymore. We are an archival for both Burns and Smithers, but the entire Burnsmithers ship that has prevailed in queer culture for decades, so in a sense it’s historic to look at them and that in retrospect. I probably will still add occasional things to this blog even if Burnsmithers ceases to exist as honestly I have drawn distant from it thanks to the show’s reluctance for keeping at the status quo despite feeding us the crumbs that have persisted over the years. Pouring my heart out on researching them, researching queer culture, semiotics and icongraphy really put a new boot on my life in a dark time, it was really a way for me to distance myself from that. In a sense, this blog was an archival project of mine and a few others in the Simpsons community whom we shared together, and simply it was a sweet fleeting moment. Honestly, it kind of feels bittersweet; on one hand they became one of the most iconic are they or aren’t they queer couples of the decade, but on the other hand things change whether we like them or not.
