TIGERS SNIFF THE ROSE (2026), dir. Zoe Qin

The story goes that two people who shouldn't be together met and still fell in love. The woman eventually hurt the man who deeply loved her. But this man still tried to protect her and died. How foolish. No. I watched the interview. The composer said that in the story, the man believed until the very end that it was fate—even if it was a wrong fate.

Seldom do I have the urge to sit down and write a proper reflection on a series. After finishing Journey With You, I couldn’t help but aspire to write one, admitting to myself that I need an outlet for this lump on my chest.

Initially, I intended not to spoil it for those who plan to watch the drama but haven’t started yet. However, there are some points I long for touching upon (including details regarding the finale of this series and of some other dramas) so…. BEWARE, it’s probably better to skip this if you prefer to start watching a series with a clean slate 😊

A breakdown for the ending:

First things first, my sincere apologies for silently questioning why people highly care about whether the ending is a happy one or not, to the extent of giving it a shot only if it’s a happy ending. This, I swear, is the first time EVER in my life I seriously craved a happy ending. (Though deep down I knew, for any other sorts of endings, I would hold series dearly nonetheless.) To me, as long as the way things wrap up serves the plot, or you see it coming, or it makes sense for other reasons, I’m ok with it. Maybe I cry like waterfalls, get pissed, or catch various other feelings. But at the end of the day, what I value most is the ride, the “journey”. Just like in life, what can keep us going, regardless of knowing where it will eventually lead, is what happens between the “Action!” and “Cut!”. For instance, my all-time favorite: “My Journey To You”. It’s rather a left-in-the-middle ending than an open-ended one, as it was labeled. Even then, the plot was so intriguing, the cinematography was so breathtaking, and the acting was top-notch that I somehow accepted the ending, saying, “It is what it is.” Honorary mention of “A Journey To Love” (too many “journeys” for one post 😝). I assume that we all created a new ocean on Earth with our emotions and teardrops. Sorry, in case I reopened an old wound. 🥺 Despite the gloom, my solace-seeking take on that was the story unfolded in a sense that got me hooked, with an incredibly well-done pacing and sparkling chemistry between literally the whole cast. So, I went through all the emotions to the hilt and shelved that one in my mental category of “Bittersweet Dramas”. As to my precious Journey With You;

My first instinct was that it was a happy ending. The tears that fall with the weight of agonizing past events, turning into utter happiness on their faces … And Yin Qi’s decisive and stubborn inner monologue right before that moment reminded me that he could really change the course of events in Life 2 thanks to his determination. So it felt like a hint at how Yanzhi’s return is possible. Or maybe, I was so eager to see them happy that I convinced myself to believe so 🥹 Because while providing a relationship timeline flashbacks and a full-circle moment on a bridge, that touching atmosphere suddenly leaves you hanging in midair since there are no further interactions. When you ponder it for a minute, the realization slowly approaches to hit “Is this actually an open ending?” Practically, you can have your own arguments and proofs as to why it is a happy ending, whereas others will have their arguments to conclude that it’s not. *(This is the part where I can’t even bring myself to imagine the possibility of Life 2 being entirely an illusion. OH, PLEASE, NOOOOO. I’m not going into details as to how it can be to hold back further emotional damage.)* Although Wang Jing Han and Tang Bi De -the actors who brought Pei Yanzhi and Yin Qi to life- both interpreted the very last scene as a hallucination (see at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDuP4I2tacU), I’m inclined to take it as an in-flesh reunion. (You see, I connected way too profoundly with this drama to accept otherwise.) Actually, this right here is the reason why I’m grateful that they picked an open ending instead of going for a direct sad ending. If you’re not hellbent on a cautionary tale but not aiming for a happily-ever-after festival either, I think the least that you can do is to let the audience decide on how they derive meaning. Or maybe, just leave hope-instilling traces of repairable destruction for the characters’ future. So, in plain words, I’m satisfied in terms of the ending it delivered.

My overall thoughts about the drama:

When I came across the series trailer and promotional stuff shared by people on different social media platforms, I instantly knew I’d dive right in. The insight that I have acquired now is that, genre-wise, historical Chinese BL is my soft spot. Also, since the very first interaction between the main couple, the unmatched chemistry has been the biggest highlight for me throughout the whole process of impatiently waiting for the next episode. And having 8 episodes in total, left the flavor lingering indeed.

Just as every other drama that has been and will be made, it has its own imperfections. Therefore, I’m not going for an in-depth analysis here and will keep it to myself 😌 One thing I can underline though, is that I value seeing potential, and I did in many aspects, from directing to acting, from cinematography to the ideas conveyed through the script. It would be bold to say I could precisely pinpoint all the reasons why this drama resonated with me so ardently. Then again, there are some obvious ones, such as the genuine shower of emotions dripping from all the 4 main roles (will explain more shortly), my personal taste in time-travel theme, palace intrigue, and the almost-tangible romance between Yin Qi and Yanzhi that developed over time, as summarized in the series, which pulled at my heartstrings. As for the second couple pairing, Yinzhou and Ziming, oh dear… They are beyond help, to say the least, but the broken parts they carry within complement each other so painfully yet beautifully well. In my field of profession, if this couple were real, we’d probably say something like “The dysfunctions wouldn’t function with anyone but each other.”

Not only was the chemistry of both pairings sizzling, but I also felt like I could sense every single person’s devotion to their roles. That’s what I meant by “genuine shower of emotions”. Somehow,  I could say that I felt they are genuinely into this project -not regarding it as a mere piece of work. Just as I am. As someone who steers clear of delulu inferences, the chemistry honestly felt like to not be restricted to an on-set bonding (particularly for the main character pairing). For the first time -which now made the count two in “firsts” with this series, and I assure you there is more - I joined livestreams, knowing that I’d understand maybe just a few more phrases than “xie xie” and nothing else.

All in all, it’s safe to say that Journey With You has already secured a place in my heart as one of those special dramas that I’ll go back for a rewatch every now and then.
