Looks like I get my “real life is a musical” trait from the Norwegian side of the family

I'd love to think that this was just traditionally something sailors did coming into port, but shantys are work-songs, not fun songs, so they're really just showing off and singing something which sailors would traditionally sing while doing back-breaking labor. The song seems to be a variation of "South Australia." But still, AWESOME.

Maybe you guys are sick of this post but It’s really important to freelance artists and pretty much everyone who uses the internet, so here it is again.  \o0o/

Seriously important. Call your congress-critter. Don't email. Call. Keep it short and simple. "Net neutrality is about freedom. If you don't protect it I'll make sure everyone who I know knows about your failure to do so and we will not vote for you."

Thesis: the narrow focus on public performance over substantive action in certain activist circles has less to do with cynical schemes to game the system for progressive brownie points, and more to do with the fact that many folks basically think social activism is a form of ritual magic. Popular histories give us images of Great Men making speeches and leading marches and circulating petitions, and completely erase all the ground-level infrastructure that made all that stuff work; the end result is that a lot of folks seem honestly to believe that bringing about social change is a matter of performing the appropriate symbolic actions and waiting for reality to reconfigure itself accordingly.

This is, IME, exactly how a lot of people think reality works, whether or not they realize it. It’s not just Tumblr, or movement orgs – it’s the prototype narrative we’re presented with in both fiction and education. It’s how successful movements get portrayed after the fact.

So, very useful original article and also a lot of the commentary has valid points (not all the same valid point, not all with the same focus) but it's useful and enlightening to people who've never seen the grunt work behind the movement. We fixate on the front men and women. Rosa Parks and MLK get a lot of camera time, the kids rotating in the seats at the Greensboro Woolworth counter do, but the hundreds of bus drivers and organizers who were part of the march on Washington are forgotten. Organization and hard work matter more than 'just showing up' or yelling 'solidarity!' Social change is VERY hard work, not button-clicking.

When you’re carding, spinning and weaving everything from scratch, using the big squares exactly as they come off the loom must seem like a fucking brilliant idea. 90% (or more) of pre-14th century clothing is made purely on squares (and sometimes triangles cut from squares). 

How did they get the fabric so fine it draped like that? Was that something medieval europe forgot? Or do I just have a completely misguided image of historical clothing?
