Feeling oddly like a jilted lover, you pounded on the door to your fiancĆ©ās apartment. After a missed date, three unanswered calls, and no less than seven unseen text messages, you werenāt sure if you were acting on irritation or worry by showing up to his fancy downtown building. It wasnāt like him to do this, but that didnāt really ease the sting of having been stood up at a nice restaurant, all dressed up with nobody to appreciate it save for the pitying stares of the happy couples around you. So, you pounded on his door, and then you shouted, and then you tried the doorknob and realized it was unlocked. At least he was at home.
āHello? Itās me. You know, the girl you stood up. The one who you may or may not get married to at some point,ā you called inside. But those words faltered as you realized that something was off. Indignant anger had gotten you this far, but suddenly that waned. All of the lights were off and your voice echoed into the silence. āAnyway, Iām coming in. Youād better not have a girl over.ā The last part was hastily added, almost like a joke if you had been able to inject any humor into it. Right then, infidelity wasnāt high on your list of concerns.
Shutting the door behind yourself, you realized that it wasnāt just dark in the entryway. No light came from the main living room to your left or the kitchen on the right. And it was cold. It couldnāt have been more than fifty degrees inside, drawing chills up your bare arms and legs. And you, stupidly, had left your coat in the car.
āHello?ā you called again, your voice losing volume and confidence. The apartment was so silent that you could hear every click of your heels on the tile. But he had to be home, otherwise, the door would have been locked. With a sinking feeling of trepidation, you walked into the main room. The only light came from the large windows on the opposite wallāthe pale glow of a busy city barely illuminating the immaculate living roomāas did the chill. Heād left the balcony door open, inviting in cool February air. It caused the drawn curtains to ripple gently. Shivering, you crossed the dark room to look outside, but the balcony was empty save for the plants that had been wrapped up against the cold like little ghosts.
Something was wrong, and it wasnāt just the cold and the dark. With chills covering your skin for an entirely new reason, you pushed the door shut.
āHey? Are you here?ā you called, raising your voice so it carried up the stairs going to the bedrooms and his office. Panic unmistakably colored the words, it pooled like poison in your stomach.
āI am,ā an unfamiliar voice responded, nearly making you jump out of your skin as you whirled around with a distinctly undignified yelp. āThereās no need to shout.ā
