Zuko and Azula have the most fascinating relationship in ATLA
Sibling rivalry is often a trite story of one sibling hating the other out of jealousy. On the surface, the Zuko and Azula may look that way. They have no problem blasting fire and lightning at each other and both of their parents had a favorite. But there’s so much more to it.
First of all, I would argue that in spite of many near-fatal encounters, they don’t necessarily hate each other. It’s far more complicated than that. How they view each other is closely tied to how they view themselves.
For most of Zuko’s life, Azula is the standard he’s held to. She’s ambitious, ruthless, and a prodigy. No matter what he does, he can’t earn their father’s approval like she can. And she rubs it in his face constantly. When Azula is cruel to Zuko, Ozai affirms that she’s not wrong to do so. Zuko rarely argues with her because he’s been conditioned to believe she’s right. Zuko has internalized the blame for how his father treats him rather than project it onto Azula, and accepts how she treats him as normal. He has plenty of bitter feeling toward her, but none quite as clear as hate.
Azula’s view of Zuko is even more convoluted. The first time we see Azula, she’s smiling because their father is about to burn him. The next time they meet, she berates him for being a failure of a son. It looks like she enjoys watching him suffer.
But when Zuko helps “kill” the Avatar in Ba Sing Se, we get to see them in a new context. In the rare moments that they aren’t pitted against each other by the ever looming presence of their father… they actually get along fine.
Every time Azula appeared happy to see Zuko suffering, it was at the hands of their father. It wasn’t just that Ozai hurt Zuko, it what that Ozai hurt Zuko and not her. Every time Ozai insulted or injured her brother, it cemented Azula’s position as the favorite child. And she had to stay the favorite child because she’s seen what would happen to her if she wasn’t. Deep down, she knows just how conditional her father’s positive regard is. When Ozai leaves her in the Fire Nation while invading the Earth Kingdom, the first words out of her mouth are “You can’t treat me like Zuko”. Being better than Zuko is part of her identity.
When Zuko defects from the Fire Nation and begins to succeed without meeting, or even trying to meet, the standards set by their father, it throws her priorities into doubt. In her mind, Zuko is supposed to fail. But she isn’t truly unnerved until she’s betrayed by Mai and Ty Li.
She is incapable of understanding why Mai would chose Zuko, and this drags to the surface her inability to understand why her mother preferred Zuko. She believed her mother loved Zuko and not her. Now Mai, her closest friend, loves Zuko and not her.
This conflicts with her entire view of the world. She sees the worth of a person as equal to their quantifiable skills and accomplishments. She has been admired, respected, and feared, but as far as Azula believes, no one has ever loved her. She was a prodigy who did everything right, while Zuko was the family screw up. Yet people loved him and not her.
For years, being better than Zuko was how Azula measured herself. Ozai said Zuko was lucky to be born. That he was worthless, weak, disrespectful, and both his children believed him. When Zuko left, he finally saw that Ozai was wrong about him. When Zuko returns during Sozin’s comet, Azula too is forced to see that her perception is wrong.
Zuko has become the embodiment of everything she lacks. She thought he was weak, but he’s not afraid enough to fight her fairly as an equal. She thought he was dishonorable, but really he was independent enough to break away from their father’s control. She thought he was worthless, but he’s found people who care about him in spite of his flaws.
Azula isn’t just trying to kill him, but everything he represents. And when she can’t, she breaks. Zuko is still standing. She has nothing left.
Word of God (Bryke) confirmed that at the end of the Agni Kai, Zuko felt pity rather than hate for his sister. This continues into the comics as he genuinely tries to help her. He knows that while she may not have been overtly abused like he was, she was raised in the same web of lies, agendas, and violence.
Their past left them both unable to trust people. Azula controlled everyone around her with fear. Zuko shut other people out and tried to do everything on his own. It isn’t until Zuko has left his old life behind that he slowly begins to let people in.
While Azula hangs onto the beliefs of Ozai and the Fire Nation, Zuko can see their situation from the outside. He sees two screwed up teenagers who spent their lives fighting their father’s war, manipulated into a conflict that isn’t their fault, forced to kill each other over choices made a century before they were born. It took Zuko years to figure out the hell that was his home life wasn’t his fault, but only a few minutes to see that it wasn’t Azula’s either.
Well…shit
this is beautiful
Imagine if Dudley did have a magical child though.
He and Harry haven’t spoken since ‘I don’t think you’re a waste of space’ and he’s matured enough to realise his parents were not good to Harry, especially since the birth of his own little girls because God forbid anything happened to him and they were treated like Harry was.
On Daisy Dursley’s eleventh birthday theres a knock on the door and his wife, Anita, just stares and he feels his stomach drop because the stern lady on the doorstep is wearing a cloak and pointed hat.
They listen to the woman - Professor McGonagall - explain and Anita is surprised but receptive, Daisy is excited and Dudley is terrified of what this means.
It’s a surprise to his wife and little girl when at the end of her explanation, while Daisy’s flicking through a book with moving pictures and Anita peers over her shoulder, Dudley blurts out ‘it’s safe now then? Your world?’
Professor Mcgonagall gives a wry smile and assures him that the magical world is indeed safe. It dawns on him that she was expecting this, that she’d perhaps researched him and was aware of his relation to Harry.
He then admits to Anita and Daisy that his cousin is a wizard, before turning to the Professor and asking if she by chance knows a Harry Potter. Looking amused, professor Mcgonagall acknowledges that she does.
’D'you know where he lives?’
That does surprise her a bit, and she tells him that yes, she knows and that though Daisy’s acceptance into the school has been confidential up until this point, Harry would likely not mind a visitor if he wanted a word.
Daisy begs to come along and he relents eventually, bringing Anita and their youngest, Poppy, along.
All four of them stand on the doorstep of a modest house that Dudley would call nice if there weren’t squat little creatures snickering and running around the front garden.
The door is opened by a slouching boy with turquoise hair who arches a purple eyebrow at them. He yells over his shoulder for someone named Ginny and steps back to let them in, and, when he notices Daisy staring at his hair, he smirks and a second later it’s bubblegum pink.
Daisy squeals in delight and Dudley is still trying to get his head around that when young girl and boy around Daisy’s age with bright red hair and thick brown curls respectively, hurtle down the corridor.
‘Teddy you promised you’d practice the sloth grip roll with us!’ The girl yells in an accusatory tone.
A woman with hair the same shade of flaming red as the little girl appears with what Dudley recognises as a wand in her hand as the boy with blue hair flashes a grin at them before chasing the two younger children outside to a shout of ‘No higher than the treetops Teddy!’
Harry is much like Dudley remembers him, lanky with a pointed face, straight nose and mess of untameable black hair. It’s awkward, but, apparently forewarned, Harry greets him pleasantly and introduces his wife before Ginny goes outside to reign in a gaggle of children he assumes aren’t all Harry’s.
A woman with thick, bushy hair pulled into a messy bun with a wand stuck in it smiles and makes an effort to talk to Anita. She’s not too strange, he thinks, and reassures them that her parents were just as baffled when they found out she was a witch.
‘Why don’t you take Daisy outside to see the broomsticks, Al?’ Harry suggests to Daisy’s obvious delight and Dudley swears Harry’s trying not to laugh.
By the end of the visit Dudley is more informed about the wizarding world than he ever thought he would or wanted to be. Daisy, with a bruise on her forehead and scraped knees, because despite both his and Harry’s warning she hadn’t been able to resist trying to fly, is bouncing off the walls because ‘daddy how could you not tell us?!’
They visit Harry’s a lot over summer and Daisy befriends Lily Luna Potter and Hugo Weasley. Dudley doesn’t feel up to the trip to Diagon Alley but regrets his decision to not go when Daisy comes back with two owls, ‘uncle Harry bought the second one for me! So you can write without having to wait for me to send my owl!’
Petunia Dursley faints when she finds out, and Vernon spends a good half hour cursing and brandishing things aimlessly before retreating to his shed.
Dudley being introduced to what he calls ‘all those bloody gingers’ some of whom are only just on the right side of civil to him (one cheerfully introduces himself as someone who once visited his childhood home in a flying car and asks if he’s going to need to do the same for Daisy or will she be allowed to attend without punishment).
Daisy is shocked to find out Harry’s famous, and finds out as much as she can about him during her first term, which she relays to an increasingly guilty feeling Dudley, who’s gradually coming around to the idea.
It’s not as bad as his parents made out it was. He’s learned to understand Daisy’s ramblings about her subjects and spells and is proud of her achievements at school. He’s met a handful of witches and wizards through Harry and the world that he’s always been told is terrible doesn’t seem too bad anymore, after all, how could it with his little girl in it? He is prepared come excitable little Poppy’s eleventh birthday, for her to join her sister at Hogwarts instead of standing jealously on the platform as she leaves.
Poppy Dursley never gets a letter.
I TRUSTED YOU
No, but imagine. Three generations later, this family FINALLY gets the one wizard kid/one Muggle kid thing right. Poppy is never made to feel less, even though she’s disappointed. Daisy is never made to feel like a freak. Poppy is accepted by Harry’s kids, they play with her and she doesn’t need magic to play wizard chess or toss gnomes and Teddy takes her flying sometimes (she becomes a hell of a Quidditch referee and strategist with Ginny’s help, though she never plays).
Anita and Dudley talk to Poppy about what she’d like to do for school and she goes to a prestigious Muggle school, and as it turns out she becomes really, really good at tech and coding. She takes lots of time off to visit Daisy at Hogwarts where she becomes a favorite of McGonagall (so many clever questions). Eventually she meets Luna and spends most of a summer with her, following Crumple-Horned Snorkacks with the help of some trackers Poppy built to work around magic. Everyone is terribly impressed, and although Poppy tries to be blasé about it, she’s actually really proud.
And soon enough Daisy is graduating and working at the Ministry in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office with Arthur Weasley, who has been working on loosening some of the legislation, and when Poppy graduates she has a marvelous idea. She and Daisy open a shop in Diagon Ally for all these Muggle technologies that Poppy has fixed to work around and with magic. Dursley’s Muggle Magic, they call it.
And suddenly wizards are running around with iPhones and Kindles (Hermione made a digital copy of Hogwarts, a History RIGHT AWAY) and everyone is catching up on decades of video games and a century of movies. Scorpius Malfoy has an Apple Watch. And it’s all thanks the Poppy Dursley, the Muggle.
Letter to my S/O
So I was just kinda in the mood to write you a letter. I don’t know, I guess I just want to express how I feel and I kinda hope that this will help me do it. When I first saw you in my sophomore year, my initial thought was “Oh hey, cutie in sight” and I never did think much of it. As time went on though, I found myself wanting to be your friend. So I started talking to you more. Quite honestly I’m not sure how we eventually got so close that we became best friends, but I’m glad that we did. The tiny crush that I had on you had developed into something more. I began to look for your happiness. I began to look out for you and I became protective of you. You had become so special to me that anything that upset you, would upset me because of it. You always seemed to look down on yourself, but that’s because you can’t see the beautiful soul that shines within you. You may not be ready to handle the life after high school. You may let some people down. You may not meet everybody’s expectations, but I’ve learned that one’s happiness should always come first. Happiness will not be achieved in one go, it may not be achieved within a year. Happiness is more of snapshots throughout one’s life that can overshadow the bad and horrible that happens. We will never escape the darkness, but we will always have the light to help us see and guide us. I may not be your happiness, because one person simple cannot be that. But I do hope that I can help bring happiness to you. I want to be with you during the bad and the good. I want to be able to help you in anyway I can. Because I love you. Even if we never became a couple, your happiness would always be important to me. I have so many insecurities and they won’t go away so easily. I don’t know what the future might hold. I want to be your significant other for now and forever, but life is forever changing and I may not be the one in later years, but it’d be okay as long as your happy. I love you and I know you love me too. I’m not saying that our love isn’t strong enough, but more that I’m just always overthinking the small stuff, I guess. I love you, I love you, I love you. I can’t stop saying enough. There’s not enough words in the world to help me describe this immense feeling of love and affection I hold for you. When we’re together I enjoy the moment to the fullest. When we’re apart I think of you. I love you. So. Damn. Much. And I hope that we live and grow together. I hope that we find our happiness with each other and share life’s good moments. I’m so immensely happy that we meet. Because you have become such an important aspect of my life. I love how comfortable it is to be with you. There’s never a need for me to lie or change an aspect of myself, because you already know so much about me. Falling in love with my best friend was the best fall I’ve ever taken. We were already as close as one could be as friends, and now as lovers, we become even closer. And that’s just a beautiful thing. I want to discover this world and the wonders of it by your side. I want to live and grow old with you as we watch our children grow and learn of the world just as we will soon do. I want to always be in love with you as I have been for the past year. We both each have our demons to fight, but that doesn’t mean to fight them alone. Just as we love each other, we shall fight for each other. Just as you assist me with my demons, I shall always be by your side unfaltering, to assist you in your fight. We shall be each other support for that is what love is, I believe. I see your beauty and potential that you may not be aware that exists in you but I’m sure that one day when you’re old and playing with your grandchildren, you’ll be giving them your wisdom of life, and you’ll realized that. that gorgeous soul that rests within you, has helped and made you the wonderful person that you’ll be. This letter went all over the place honestly and I’m not sure if my messages got or will ever successfully get across, but I have a life time to work with nevertheless. It’s quite late and I wish you a good night, J*** along with pleasant dreams. I love you, my love, and I always will. <3
My parents are kicking me out for getting out of a toxic relationship and finding someone new.
The toxic relationship was with someone in our church. He was perfect in my parent’s eyes. He loved me, but a little too much. He would stalk me. Control me. but he said it was out of love. He was obsessed with me. We were together for 6 months. Then I decided to take measures to help myself. Because I felt drowned and suffocated with him. I needed space and he would occupy all of it. I needed out.
So I broke up with him. It was sudden. Nobody expected it. Not him. Not the church. Not my parents. But nobody understood why I did it. They thought I was being unreasonable. They thought I was being selfish.
He wanted me back. He told me he cut himself. He told me he was miserable. He told me he needed me. He told me that I was his everything. told me to stop acting like the victim when it was obvious he was the one hurting the most.
I loved him. But I couldn’t anymore. I was done and tired. I helped him so many times and so many times he brushed me off. Now it is my time. Time for me to love myself. Time to learn to say no. Time to find my happiness instead of serving others theirs.
My parents disagreed. They would push for me to fix my relationship with him. They pushed for me to go back to him. Because he was perfect. Because he was a church boy. The thing is however, that being in church doesn’t make you a good person. Being in church does nothing. Nobody is perfect. He was far from perfect.
I’ve always had a crush on my male best friend since freshmen year. But he liked someone else, so I kept my silence. As the years went by, me feelings only grew. Now as a senior, I knew I loved him. But he never gave signs of wanting to be more than friends. So I never pushed.
It’s been a while since my breakup with the church boy. My relationship with my parents are strained. Church is disappointed in the failed relationship. The boy has gone to visit the different churches in our area. I feel alone, but refuse to show it. I refuse to show weakness to those looking for it.
A month before we graduate from high school, my best friend admits that he loves me. That he wants to be more than friends. My best friend, the one who knows everything about me, loves me back. The one who knows about my breakdowns, my panic attacks, my struggles. Has seen my good and acknowledges the bad. The one who sees everything in me. He loves me back.
I was happy.
It didn’t last very long.
My parents disapproved. They don’t want me to date a non-religious person. They wanted the church boy again. I didn’t.
So for once, I went against them. And I’m paying the price for that.
I have a month to leave my house
A month to find a place to move to.
A month to find a new home.
I looking for my happiness, yet for that I’m losing my family.
I stopped listening and following orders, and I’m being left behind.
It hurts. It hurts so so much. Pain is something that is indescribable.
Having you blood and family reject you harshly is a pain I never though I would go through.
It hurts, but I won’t let that stop me.
It hurts, but I won’t bow down to them again.
It hurts, but I will continue to search for my happiness.
It hurts, but I will show them that I am better than they ever have and will be.
I will show them that I AM NOT WEAK.
I HAVE A HIDDEN STRENGTH AND I WILL SHOW THAT.
I REFUSE TO BOW DOWN AGAIN.
I WILL RISE AND SHINE ABOVE THEM ALL.

this is some epic solarpunk shit yes good
Okay, so Oikawa literally has his own official & organised fan club.
As a member you get an Oi-Card (omfg), and it says you can use it at Shimada Mart, Sakanoshita Shoten and various other stores with benefits. I just can’t believe this nerd actually has an organised fan club, with even a member card. I have so many questions. Who started it?? How many members are there? Is Iwa-chan a member??????
i don’t think Hinata and Kageyama would pull a prank (i think they would get easily found out because they will keep fidgeting) so they will just attack go to Tsukishima straight on
this was a magnificent experience, thank you so much anon

Ohgosh!! The gayness of this stageplay is goin off the roof I mean look at em it’s as if they’re about to KISS and also look at the faces of daichi and suga…. Kids dont kiss in front of yer parents XDXD i do know whats happenin tho but still XDXD
some random headcanons no one asked for
- noya is a really good dancer and hes good at several kinds of dance including break dancing, hip hop, ballroom and ballet
- noya is also very bisexual and he came out first to saeko on accident. it was early in his first year of high school, she was bleaching his hair for him bc he needed “a new, cooler look for high school”. he was talking about his new volleyball team mates when he absentmindedly let it slip that he thought his senpai azumane asahi was “really hot”
noya is like a little brother to saeko so she kept this conversation secret until he was ready to properly come out
- ushijima listens to and owns every taylor swift album
- oikawas alarm sound on his phone is the “Sy-fi” one
- iwaizumis is the original stock alarm bc he doesnt see why he should change it
- maki and matsun know eachothers phone passcodes so they constantly go back and forth setting terrible selfies as the others home screen
- they also know oikawas passcode and every so often they make new shortcuts for certain words, one time they made “practice” change to “fuck” knowing full well who he would ask to practice the most. that was their favorite.
- kageyama is very emotionally invested in neko atsume bc he likes that the cats arent afraid of him like real ones are, his favorite cat is socks and he changed sunnys name to hinata
- bokuto doesnt know when to stop, with anything, which is why he always ends up getting stuck holding the door for literally e v e r y o n e - kuroo plays every video game kenma does so he can talk to him about it, bc he likes how kenma smiles softly when talking about his favorite games
