“Whittled away…”

In truth, the press of bodies at the party all around them had begun to grate, in a fashion. Far more appealing lay the empty stretches of sand at the edge of quiet ocean waters, both glowing blue-white under the twin moons.

“I wish to run on the beach,” she appealed, unconsciously leaning nearer, her chin brushing his shoulder. “Run with me!”

“And leave the company of our gracious hosts?” Despite his feeble attempts to make it appear otherwise, he already knew he would give in and go with her;  between the throng of chatty guests and the punch he had been offered repeatedly throughout the evening, the warmth enveloping him was getting unbearable. Shedding his coat earlier had done nothing to help with that, so her idea held the promise of freedom and fresh air, both things he would appreciate immensely.

“Alright, if you insist — lead the way, but don’t break into a run just yet.  We should be tactful while escaping.”
