Beron wasn’t raised in an abusive home and had no siblings. The former High Lord was a spoiled, old man obsessed with wealth and made reckless decisions that weakened Autumn. His mother indulged in luxury and parties, while Beron grew to despise what his once great court had become. Raised largely by his Mentor (whom he actually trusts), Beron was taught ruthlessness and strategy. He fought and led battles, traveled for knowledge, mastered magic, and admires a past High Lord from the Night court known as a conquerer and collected his journals while growing resentful of his own incompetent family.

In my version, the land still chooses its ruler from the high lord bloodline, but only those deemed worthy. Beron is sinister, brutal, and calculating while his cousin was far kinder, yet the magic chose Beron (right after murdering his father on his wedding night) because despite his cruelty the Autumn court actually thrives under his leadership. He doesn’t act on impulse but weighs benefits and consequences, making deals and decisions that satisfy other courts while strengthening his own. Through his strategy, Autumn‘s military (especially his assassins) became the strongest force in the land. His cousin on the other hand would’ve acted upon his emotions, the court would’ve not been so great under his leadership even if lesser fearies were given basic rights. He and his parents were later brutally murdered and Beron‘s mother shipped off to a land far away from Prythian.

Beron does care for his family in a twisted way. He doesn’t abuse to vent anger, instead only punishes whenever they threaten his image or plans. With the sons he sees as most worthy (like Eris), he either breaks them down through cruel lessons or includes them in his ‘special activities,’ like shooting at lesser faeries and mounting their heads as trophies to kill any trace of empathy (he only takes Eris and another son with him). He’s terrifying because he speaks softly, sometimes even like a real father, yet always cold. He would let his sons sit in his study while he works. Eris especially liked reading under his desk. Beron himself taught Eris how to manage his smokehounds. He allowed his kids to roam around as long as they didn’t break anything as kids (except for Lucien. He barely acknowledged his existence). His wife couldn’t complain either despite his eerie, suffocating presence that made her nervous, but other than that they did have full, easing conversations (before he discovered her affair).

I‘m not sure if Eris is the eldest in canon but he isn’t in my remake. His father always considered him among the ‚worthy’ and though Eris didn’t grew up with a loving father and often silently questioned him, he treasure certain moments and always tried to impress him (all his sons tried so), until the eldest died. That’s when Beron shifted his focus onto Eris and he finally understood why his brother had been so cold and detached. Granted, Eris didn’t become like his brother, but he‘s an arrogant and conflicted asshole now. His father mentally messed him up that Eris believes he might be like his father. He can’t bring himself to take over the throne because he loves and hates Beron so much at the same time, it’s tormenting him.
