I am trying literally so hard to avoid spoilers for season 3, since Iâm not Canadian. ITS SO DIFFICULT. I mean, Iâve filtered all of the tags and stuff, I just get so curious and click on the posts anyway. Iâm going to end up knowing everything that happens without watching the seasonđ .
Summary: (As suggested by: Love AnnE on ao3) What if Anne followed Billy in Episode 9, Season 2, when he runs into the woods to shoot Anneâs fox.
Length: 682 words, 1/1 Chapter
Notes: I hope you enjoy! Unfortunately this one doesnât have shirbert, but it does have BadAss!Anne
Reminiscing on the day's events, Marilla, Ms Stacey and Anne strolled down the steps of the schoolhouse.Â
"Well, this day went differently than I'd imagined!" Marilla turned to Ms Stacey solemnly.
"May we walk you partway home?"
"That's very kind."
Before more could be said, Billy grabbed his gun, resting on the schoolhouse's wall, and ran in front of them:
"Personally, I like not having to read books every day!"
"Was that meant to be consoling?" Miss Stacey pondered aloud.Â
As the boys ran off, Anne could feel rage coursing through her blood.Â
"Leave the fox alone, Billy, he's an innocent creature!" she shouted.
"He's my new hat!" he cackled.Â
Hastily, Anne muttered a request to meet Marilla at home and began to march towards the three boys.
She slowed, realising they didn't know that she was following them. She hid behind trees, watching her step for twigs and ice. Soon enough, the three boys split up, eyes peeled for any flash of red in the snow. Deciding to follow Billy, Anne continued to sneak around the trees, often darting out of sight just in time.Â
After tracking him for a while, she couldn't see him anywhere. No matter how hard she tried to find him and his stupid gun, she had lost him. When she finally surrendered and began to head back to Green Gables, she heard two piercing shots. Whipping around, she sprinted towards the source of the noise. She soon spotted Billy in a clearing, gun poised, at the ready.Â
"Don't hurt my fox!" Anne screamed, clambering forward, out of breath. Billy dropped the gun out of sheer fright and turned to glare at her.
"I was taking practice shots," he shouted, "Either way, what does it matter if it were the fox? I would have killed it before you had the chance to stop me!"
"Billy Andrews!" She advanced on him. "If you think that I will let you get away with this for even one second, you must be more stupid than I thought. I will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of my fox."
He was dumbfounded. Trying desperately to regain his composure, he attempted a comeback.
"I do  think that I'm going to get away with this!"
It took only a second to think about the implications of that phrase; Anne chuckled.Â
"I didn't mean that I am more stupid than you thought... I meant..." Billy could not get the words out. He had lost this one. "Besides, what do you think an ugly little orphan like you could do to stop me?" Confidently crossing his arms, he stepped forward, challenging her.Â
"I could do more than you." He was provoking her. Curling into tight fists, Anne's hands travelled down to her book bag, searching for something that could help her.
"As if. You're just a girl, you're ugly, your red hair is revolting, and you're a freak who has no friends. What makes you think you could stop me?" He grinned, knowing he hit all of her insecurities.
"Ugly?" Turning red with rage, she took a firm step forward, "Revolting?" She took another, "FREAK?" With one last step, she screamed, "HOW DARE YOU!"
Finally, her hands grasped around what she was trying so hard to find. In one swift motion, she smacked her brand new slate across Billy Andrew's face, leaving a red mark on his right cheek. Staggering back with shock, Billy knelt to grab his gun. Anne raised the broken slate once more, prepared to bring it down on the top of his head.
"FINE! I won't shoot the fox! Just please don't to that again!" She dropped her hands.
He scrambled away, figurative tail between his legs. Anne replaced the slate in her bookbag before beginning the walk back to Green Gables, smiling all the way. Arriving just before her curfew, she burst into the kitchen, excited to tell Marilla and Matthew about her adventure.Â
"Good heavens, Anne! Whatever happened to your new slate?" Marilla scolded.
"It's alright, Marilla! I just had to put Billy Andrews in his place!"Â
Summary: This story is based of the scene in which Anne runs to Gilbertâs house to apologise after saying that he was lucky to have memories of his dead father (after the funeral). So this is basically: If Gilbert was actually home when Anne went to apologise!
Length: 980 words, Chapter 1/1
Notes: So, Iâve started this new series called âWhat If...â (inspired by Marvel haha) that basically has a bunch of one shots of stuff that happened in the show that could have changed the story line if it were slightly different. Like Mini Aus I guess? Anyway, I read Pride and Prejudice recently, before writing this, so excuse the flowery language!
Heart racing, lungs burning, Anne darted around trees and leapt over trunks. From what she remembered, delivering Gilbert's books, she was close. The line of trees ended at the opening of a field.
'Not far to go,' she hoped.
At long last, his farm came into view. She pounded on the door, desperate to see him.
"Anne?!" Gilbert seemed to be just as surprised and breathless as Anne, "Are you okay?"
"I spoke to Aunt Josephine," she continued, despite his confused look, Â "she gave me advice, but also helped me realise that I am due for an apology."
Gilbert, quickly realising what she meant, jumped in before she could begin, "Don't worry about it, Anne. I was unreasonable when you were trying to comfort me."
"No! An apology is due! If it weren't for my ignorance towards your feelings, none of this would have happened."
"Anne, I'm serious! It was nothing! It's in the past."
"Please, let me apologise. If I don't, my conscience will never rest!"
Despite her agitation, Gilbert couldn't help but admire her. The way her nose became pink, with the cold, the way her breath was heavy with the burden of sprinting.
"Fine," he eventually conceded, "Although, I have a feeling this may take a while, why don't you come inside and join me for a cup of tea?"
She nodded wearily and followed him into the kitchen, aware it was her first time inside his home.
"That's a lovely table," she commented, admiring the intricate designs down one of its legs.
Gilbert turned to look at it with anguish, "My father made that... just before he got sick."
Anne's eyes widened with realisation, "I'm so sorry."
He smiled sadly at her before continuing to make the tea.
"Speaking of apologies," Anne whispered, delicately sitting in a chair, "I am so sorry that I did not consider how my words may have affected you. Rather than relating the situation to my own experiences, I should have had the compassion to realise that what you are feeling must be so much worse than what I've ever felt. I am deeply sorry that I may have vexed you and seek your forgiveness â if you are willing to offer it."
Sitting down with both teas, Gilbert studied Anne's eyes, "Anne, of course, I forgive you. Since we last spoke, I considered your reason for saying what you did, and I understand. You were trying to make me realise that although I will experience grief, I at least have memories of my father. You, however, do not. Therefore, you cannot say that your experiences are nothing compared to mine."
His words melted her; she felt tears begin to form in her eyes. Â Wiping them away with a sleeve, she stared down at her tea.
"I'm so sorry for your loss, Gilbert," she trembled, before letting the tears roll down her face. Warmth enveloped her hands; she looked up to see his hands covering hers. They looked fondly into each other's eyes. Anne could not help cheering up at his goofy smile. Realising themselves, they leapt away from each other, looking intently into their teas. After an awkward silence, Anne began, "So, what do you think you're going to do now?"
"I'm not entirely sure, but I want to travel. I may apply for a job at the docks and see if I can get myself a job on a ship."
"You're leaving Avonlea?" Anne choked out with disbelief.
"Only for a while. I want to see the world; it's what my father would have wanted."
"I understand. I'll miss you," Anne whispered. Embarrassed, she continued, "At school, I mean. I'll have no one to compete with."
"I'll be back before you know it." Smiling fondly, he took a sip of tea. Anne looked out the window and was shocked to see the sunset on the horizon.
"I must be going. Marilla will be wondering where I am." Standing, she thanked Gilbert for the tea before turning to leave.
"Let me walk you home, Anne."
She was about to protest but recollected how scary the forest could be at night. After Gilbert retrieved a lantern, they soon set off across the field. They talked of nothing but travel, school and future vocations. Once they reached the wood's centre, darkness was upon them.
"Oh, Marilla will be so worried when we get home!" Anne announced.
"Don't worry. I'm sure your imagination can come up with a valid excuse. That's it! Maybe you should be a writer!"
Anne chuckled, "I've considered it, but I don't know whether I'm good enough. Perhaps I could become a teacher? I've always been interested in a career in education."
"I think that you can do whatever you put your mind to."
Heat rose in Anne's cheeks and she eyed Gilbert, flattered. "What about you? Do you have any ideas about what you want to do?"
"I'm not sure at the moment, but I'm sure something will eventually spark my interest."
The sudden snap of a twig on Anne's left made her jump.
"It's probably just a fox. Nothing to worry about." He looked down at her reassuringly. Without realising, she had jumped into his hold. She abruptly pulled away, walking ahead in an attempt to make it home faster. He followed several steps behind, still surprised about what had just happened.
Eventually, they reached the gate of Green Gables. Anne turned to Gilbert.
"Thank you very much, Gilbert. I probably would not have survived the walk home without you," she laughed.
"My pleasure," he replied. Anne turned to walk away, but Gilbert called out, "Hey Anne?"
"Yes, Gilbert?"
"I'll miss you too."
Anne blushed before muttering, "Travel safe, Gilbert, and... come home someday."
He nodded before they parted ways: Anne heading towards the house, Gilbert traipsing back into the woods.
'Someday, Anne Shirley,' Gilbert thought, 'Someday.'

Summary: Every person has their perfect pair, and when the youngest of this perfect pair turns 16, the two souls swap bodies for three days. It is two days until Anneâs 16th birthday... What adventures may she encounter on her three days?
Notes: I really felt like writing a fic, and this idea popped into my head. It has probably been done before so Iâm really sorry if the plot is similar to another fanfiction. If you would prefer to read it on ao3, itâs on there too. Feel free to leave a comment if you enjoyed it, constructive criticism is more than welcome!!(Btw the timelines don't really match up because of Anne's age and when Gilbert leaves... bur just roll with it and pretend Anne was 15 when Gilbert left!)
The thought of one perfect partner for each person in the world always made Anneâs heart flutter. It was possibly one of the most romantic things that she had ever heard. Luckily enough, she lived in a world where these perfect pairings did in fact exist. How you meet your soulmate was possibly the most complicated part of the process. It was common knowledge that on the 16th birthday of the younger partner in the pair, the souls of each person would swap bodies for that day. The twist was that the pairing had three days from that day to find each other before the switched back.
Anne trudged towards Green Gables, clutching two large pales of water in her arms. Even with the weight of the heavy buckets, her mood could not be dampened. It was two days before her 16th birthday.
Anne dumped the buckets in the doorway of Green Gables. âHere you are Marillaâ
âThank you, Anneâ
âMay I please go over to Dianaâs house now?â
Marilla sighed, âAlright. But be back before sundown!â
âOf course,â Anne replied gaily, running to grab a coat before making her way to Dianaâs house.
The warm sun glistened down onto Anneâs face, making her shield her eyes. The afternoon was perfect; the sun was shining, birds were singing. It seemed as if nothing was wrong with the world.
âAnne!â
Anne peered at the figure calling to her. Dianaâs bouncing curls and gorgeous dress came into view as she eventually reached Anne.
âDiana! Whatever are you doing here? I thought we were meeting at your houseâ
âWe were going to, but I was so excited that I had to meet your partway,â she exclaimed, skipping around Anne. Looking around, she found a log that was in fairly good condition and beckoned Anne over. âSo,â she said, sitting down, âHow do you feel about your birthday?â
Anne laughed, of course this is what Diana was excited about, âAh yes, the soulmate day, of course,â she replied sarcastically.
âReally Anne? I thought you would be more excited than this!â
âI am,â she reassured her friend, âItâs just, Iâm struck by nerves, thatâs all. I mean, what if the person I match with is an awful person? Or what if we canât find each other after the three days?â
âYouâll be fine, millions of people have done it before, even my parents managed to do it, and they lived on different sides of the world!â
âI suppose. Thereâs just a lot of pressure, thatâs allâ
âWell, I think your luckyâ Diana shrugged, stood up and began walking towards her house.
âLucky?â Anne jumped up following her, âHow on Earth am I lucky?â
âWell,â Diana paused to think, âFrankly, you already know who your soulmate isâŚâ
âI do?â
Diana cleared her throat. âDoes the name âGilbert Blytheâ ring a bell,â she said slyly. Diana hadnât seen Gilbert for many months, as he was on one of his adventures, but even with their lack of contact, Diana knew Gilbertâs true feelings. Even if Anne didnât want to hear about it.
Anneâs face flushed a beetroot red and her eyes widened, âIâll get you for thatâ
âYouâll have to catch me first,â Diana exclaimed, running away from Anne. They continued the chase all the way back to Dianaâs house; giggling the entire time.
As the golden glow of the sun was gradually disappearing, Anne began to make her way back to Green Gables, reflecting on her time with Diana. She still got nerves at the thought of her coming birthday, but she tried her best to push those thoughts out of her mind. This was unsuccessful. Her mind was plagued with worries and fears for the rest of the night. Her overactive imagination was no help in calming her nerves. All she could think about was what could go wrong and what that would mean for her relationship with her soulmate. She went to bed that night, still conjuring stories and situations that chilled her to the bone.
A cool breeze flew through the open window and tickled Anneâs feet. She curled deeper into her blankets, wishing that today would not happen. It was the day before her birthday, meaning tonight, at midnight, she would no longer be in her body. There was even a  possibility that she wouldnât be in Avonlea anymore. She began to spiral; what if she appeared somewhere⌠outside of Canada? She flushed those thoughts away. âNo,â she thought, âtoday, I will do my best to remain calm and have the best day ever before I need to leaveâ. With this though lingering in her head, she jumped out of bed, dressed herself and headed downstairs for breakfast.
âGood morning Anne,â Marillaâs calm tone rang out from the kitchen.
âGood morning Marilla, wonderful morning, is it not?â
âI suppose,â she replied halfheartedly, far to focused on preparing breakfast.
âI am beginning to feel the warmth of summer drifting away from us. Oh how Iâm looking forward to winter!â Anne gleefully skipped through the dining room.
âAnne be careful, you might hurt yourself,â Marilla said, dodging out of Anneâs way, clutching a plate of warm toast and butter.
âOh Iâm sorry Marilla,â Anne came spinning to a halt, âJust the thought of winter snow makes me want to sing and dance!â
Marilla raised her eyebrows, âAre you sure itâs not something else that youâre excited for? Something a little sooner?â Anne stopped in her tracks and turned.
âI have no idea what youâre talking aboutâŚâ
âOh you know,â Marilla struggled to find the right words, âYouâre 16th birthdayâ
âOh that. Well, I am excited, but I donât want to think about it⌠I will make myself too nervousâ
âI see.â She didnât see. Marilla didnât see how this 16th birthday hogwash was such a big deal. Back in her day there was no hype or excitement about it. It was just a part of life, but, with Anne as her daughter, she should have expected this kind of behaviour.
âI think I will go and find Matthew, to see if he needs anything doing.â
âAlright Anneâ
Marilla watched from the kitchen window as Anne skipped out to the barn.
âPoor girl,â she thought, âshe canât decide whether she is excited or notâ

Notes: I donât think that this fic is that good, but I thought I would post it just in case it is what someone is looking for... I also wrote it very quickly so sorry for spelling and grammar mistakes. Either way, I hope you enjoy the read!Â
The sun was shining as Diana and Anne strolled home through the woods from school. As usual they were talking about nothing and everything, school, romantic endeavors, the whole ordeal. Eventually the topic turned to a particular boy in their class.
âSoâŚ.â Diana began, raising her eyebrows glancing towards Anne, âHowâs Gilbert going?â She finished slyly. Anneâs eyeâs widened and her cheeks flushed, clearly discovering the implications behind her question.
âTo my knowledge, he is perfectly alrightâ She responded keeping her head forward.
Diana turned to Anne and looked at her indignantly, âCome on Anne! Iâve seen the way he looks at you!â
Anne continued to walk forward, trying her best not to fall for her trap, âI have no idea what youâre talking about Dianaâ
Diana followed Anne forward, walking backwards so she could still face her friend, âNo Anne, you definitely know what Iâm talking about!â
They continued arguing back and forth like this, Diana walking backwards desperately, Anne walking forwards indignantly. Diana was so set on proving their possible relationship, she didnât notice the large log looming behind her which she then ungracefully fell over. With a cry, Diana landed on her back and let out a scream.
âOh no, Diana!!â Anne leaped over the log and knelt down beside Diana grabbing her hand, âAre you okay!?â
Diana had tears streaming down her face, âAnne! My ankle, I hurt my ankle when I fell!â
âHow is that possible? You fell over backwards?â, Anneâs eyes flicked to Dianaâs ankle. It was then that she noticed that Dianaâs foot had caught in a large crack in the log, as it was quite rotten.
âOh goodness, what to do! Can you walk?â Anne grasped her arms and helped her to stand. Diana winced. âMaybe try taking a step?â
She tried and failed. Her knees buckled and she quickly sat down on the log to relieve herself of the pain. Anne softly grabbed her ankle and moved it around gently.
âDoes this hurt?â
âYesâ, Diana winced. Anne had no idea what to do, the only thing that she had treated in the past was coughs and colds, not hurt ankles.
âAnne, I canât walk on it, I canât move it, I donât know what to do, I think I need a doctorâ
Anne paused to think again, âWeâre too far away from Green Gables for me to get Matthew, and too far into the forest to go back to the school houseâ
âWhat about the Blythe Orchard? Itâs only half a mile away!â Diana said through clenched teeth, still wincing at the pain shooting up and down her leg
âNo way, I am not going to get Gilbert! Please donât make me go!â She begged.
âAnne, heâs studying medicine, heâs the closest to a doctor that weâre going to get! Please, it hurts so much!â
âOkay Diana, but Iâm only doing this because youâre my bosom friend and I love you, Okay?â
âOkay, hurry back!â Diana shooed Anne away, and Anne started running towards Gilbertâs house
Anneâs feet started to ache. She had been running for a while and she wasnât sure how long she could keep it up. Luckily for her, the Blythe Orchard was just around the corner. The house was just ahead of her and she used up her leftover energy to sprint towards the door. She began frantically knocking and calling for him. Suddenly, the door opened, and there stood Mary who seemed surprised to see her.
âAnne! What are you-â
Anne interrupted her before she could finish, âGilbertâ she panted, âI need Gilbertâ
âHeâs in the barn, is something the matter?â
âDiana, my dearest friend, she fell, and you know, since heâs studying medicine and allâŚ.â
Mary nodded knowingly and trudged through the house to the back door to fetch him. Anne followed quietly, still getting her breath back from the run. She admired the house, she realised that she had never really had a chance to look at it fully from the inside, besides Mr Blytheâs funeral of course, but at that time, her mind was distracted she supposed. She snapped out of her thoughts when she saw Gilbert approaching them.
âAnne! Hi! What brings you here?â Gilbert began with a soft smirk.
âNo time to explain, we need to go!â, Gilbert could tell by the shake in her voice that something was worrying her, which immediately put him into âdoctor modeâ.
âWhere do we need to go?â he asked seriously.
âMidway through the woods, letâs go!â
He thought for a moment, if this was really that urgent they would need to get there in a hurry, âI was just setting up the horse and cart to go to Carmody, letâs take that, it will be a lot faster!â
They both jogged towards the barn and Gilbert finished setting up the horse while Anne hopped in the cart, trying not to freak out too much. They headed out and Anne started giving directions to Gilbert.
âSo, what has happened Anne?â
âDiana and I were walking, she tripped over a log and hurt her ankleâ
âAlright, sounds like a sprain to me, but Iâll see when we get thereâ
The rest of the ride was done in silence, both of their minds preoccupied. Anne thinking about the state of her poor Diana, and Gilbert already thinking about how it should be treated.
Diana finally came into view and they stopped, got out, and ran over to where Diana was sitting.
âDiana, hi, Iâve heard from Anne that you have a hurt ankle?â Gilbert said, kneeling down beside her and inspecting her ankle.
âYes, I tripped over the log and my ankle got caught and it really hurtsâ, at this point Anne had sat next to Diana and wrapped her arms around her in support. After moving the foot around a bit, much to the annoyance of Diana, Gilbert said, âOkay, Iâm going to get you to stand up and try and walk aroundâ
âWe already tried that, it couldnât support my weightâ
âOh, alrightâ He said, surprised that Anne would think of that âIn that case, I will bandage it up and make a makeshift splint using a stick fust to support on the ride home.â
âOkayâ
Gilbert then turned to Anne, âAnne could you find me a sturdy stick please?
âOf courseâ
Anne started shuffling around, looking for a good stick to use as a splint while Gilbert wrapped the ankle up with a bandage that he had brought with him. Anne ran back with a stick and Gilbert propped the ankle up with it.
âNow Anne, can you help me lift Diana onto the cart?â
On the count of three they lifted up Diana and slowly carried her to his cart and set her down gently. They then both got in and started off towards the Barry estate. Not much conversation went on during that ride either. They eventually reached Dianaâs house and Anne explained everything to Mrs Barry while Gilbert gave medical instructions to Diana and Mr Barry. With a final goodbye, Anne and Gilbert left the Barryâs house and headed back towards the cart.
âWould you like a ride home Anne?â Gilbert asked hopefully.
âI suppose, my legs are still sore from running all the way to your houseâ replied Anne as she lifted herself onto the cart.
As they set off, Gilbert started up the conversation, âSo, it was pretty good of you to be so on the ball, I mean, you got her to walk around and moved her ankle around, pretty impressive!â
âOh really? Thatâs nothing!â
Gilbert was fully confused by this, âHave you had other medical experiences?â
âFunnily enough my most recent one was with Diana again, her younger sister had croup and Diana came over for help, I treated her and stopped her from choking upâ
âWow! Where exactly did you learn to treat croup? I heard that it is quite a bad cough!â
âI used to work for a lady with three sets of twinsâ Anne said quietly, âThey all got sick often so I had to learn how to care for themâ
Gilbert was surprised to hear this, he realised that he never really asked Anne about her past, he assumed she had been through something or other, being an orphan and all, but he canât imagine her having to work for a family.
âThree twins? That must have been tough to deal with!â
âIt was indeed, Iâm glad that I left that family. Wicked group of people. Truly horridâ
At this point they had arrived at Green Gables and Marilla and Matthew were coming into view. Anne hopped out and ran over to them, no doubt explaining her tardiness. Gilbert got out and followed her towards the house to say goodbye and apologize to Marilla and Matthew.
âWhy hello Gilbert! I hear that you and Anne have had quite the afternoon!â Marilla said kindly.
âWe have indeed, youâve got quite the doctor on your hands Mrs Cuthbertâ
Marilla smiled at this. âIs that so?â Marilla said, proud that Anne was so well accomplished.
âFor all we know she could become a doctorâ Gilbert laughed, smiling warmly towards Anne.
Anne returned his smile and responded, âThanks for all of your help today Gilbert, I canât imagine how much pain Diana might be in, but I hope that with your help sheâll feel betterâ
âIt was my pleasureâ
And with that Gilbert headed back towards his cart and headed home, all the while thinking about the new things he had learnt about Anne that day.

Request: Gilbert finding out about the spin the bottle game and him freaking out about the fact that she kisses Cole (he doesnât know it was on the cheek or about how no one wanted to kiss her and he kisses her or something ;) - @avengersassemblestydiaâ
Length: 1784, Chapter 4/4
Notes: I really hope people enjoy this! Sorry if the weather doesn't really line up with the events of the fic, but I lost track of what I had written and just wanted it to snow :) Enjoy!Â
It was the day after Gilbert had arrived back from Charlotte Town. Obviously, due to his nerves, he hadnât mustered the courage to go and see Anne yet. He didnât know when he would do it, he didnât even know whether he would do it at all. At least he knew how he felt. That was a start. He trudged through the woods glancing up at the luscious trees, admiring their beauty. He felt as if this burden weighing on him, shouldnât exist on such a beautiful day. He was dreading school; thatâs for sure. He didnât want to face Anne. Last time they spoke she got angry at him, so he wasnât sure whether they were on good terms or not. At last, he reached the door to the schoolhouse and took a deep breath before heading inside. Everything seemed normal, Diana and Anne were chatting at their desks with Ruby, Tillie, Jane and Josie all having their own conversation behind them. Yes, definitely normal. He set his books down at his desk and began to organise his things.
âHow was your weekend?â, Charlie interrupted his thoughts with the blandest question he had heard all weekend, and a bland question can only be responded by a bland answer⌠âIt was goodâ
âDo anything interesting?â Charlie continued.
âNot reallyâ Gilbert lied, âWhat about you?â
âOh, well my family and I headed down to the markets and did a bit of grocery shopping. Thereâs this stall that sells the best breadâŚ.â Charlie was going on, and on. Gilbert supposed that this was a good thing as he really wasnât in the talking mood. Â
Before Charlie could ask Gilbert another question, Miss Stacey walked in and began their lessons for the day. Gilbert tried his hardest to focus on the work, he really did. He just found it so difficult to be interested in maths when there was a beautiful, red-headed girl just across the aisle from him, only metres away. His thoughts were yet again interrupted when Miss Stacey said his name.
âPardon miss?â Gilbert drearily responded.
âI said, do you know how to calculate the volume of this sphere?â Oh no. He really hadnât been paying attention.
âUhhhhâŚ. 32m3?
âGilbert, the unit of the equation is in litresâ Miss Stacey exclaimed exasperatedly, âMaybe try listening next time!â. Heâll just have to make it up by doing extra homework and blame his cluelessness on medical studies. The time for class to end finally came, and Gilbert began gathering his books and supplies. As he was about to leave the schoolhouse there was a soft tap on his shoulder. It was Anne.
âHeyâŚâŚ Anne,â He was both confused and nervous. Why on earth would she want to talk to him? And how on earth would he tell her what he wanted to?
âUm, do you mind walking back with me? I need to ask you somethingâŚâ Her cheeks had flushed a bright red, almost matching the colour of her hair.
âSureâŚ!â His throat was dry and he desperately tried to swallow. It seemed to be now or never.
They began walking in silence through the trees. Admiring the beauty of nature that surrounded them.
Breaking the silence, Gilbert asked, âSo, what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?â
âWell, I just wanted to check that you were okay⌠You see, maths has always been your strong point and since you didnât get the answer right in class, I was wondering whether you were okay, or whether you needed some help or something?â She looked genuinely worried. Gilbert thought it was sweet that Anne would notice his incorrect answer and check whether he was okay. Just one of the reasons he loved her. Gilbert suddenly stopped his train of thought and it occurred to him, âLovedâ, he thought, âYikes! Wasnât expecting that from myself!â. He then realised that Anne was still awaiting his response.
âMy mind was just preoccupied at the time, it was nothingâŚâ, he lied.
âWhat were you thinking of, if you donât mind me askingâ
âYouâ Gilbert thought.
âMe?â Anne said in surprise.
Gilbertâs eyes widened and his hand swiftly rose to cover his mouth. âWait a minute, did I say that out loud?â, he thought frantically. Gilbert was panicking at this stage, he supposed he just had to roll with it.
Gilbert hesitated. This was his chance. He let out a sigh then began what was about to be the most torturous monologue of his life.
âWell, you seeâŚâ âCome on Blytheâ Gilbert thought to himself desperately, âAhh, I was remembering the Christmas Panto, andâŚâ Gilbert fiddled with the inside of his coat, thinking of what else to say, âAnd was recalling your fantastic performance!â
âYouâre lying arenât you?â Anne said with a smirk pulling at the side of her mouth.
Gilbert sighed, âyeahâŚâ
âSo,â Anne quickly turned, in turn blocking his path. She then crossed her arms and raised her eyebrows, âDo you mind telling me what you were REALLY thinking about?â
Snow began to fall again, surrounding them and getting caught in their hair. Gilbert admired how beautiful she looked with her rosy cheeks and illuminated breath. His shoulder slowly relaxed and he realised that he was staring, his eyes flicked away, but he couldnât help glancing at her one more time before beginning his long, overdue explanation.
âWell, you see,â he began walking forwards, âWhen I came back, I was sitting with the other boys and the subject of a certain game came up, Spin the Bottleâ
Anneâs cheeks flushed.
Gilbert continued, âMoody started filling me in on the events of the game, and one of the things he told me was that, when it came to your turn,â Gilbert paused, sighed, then carried on, âNo one wanted to kiss youâ
Anneâs cheeks flushed once again and her eyes opened wide.
âHe then told me that Cole kissed you.â, Anne went to speak, but before she could interrupt he stopped her by saying, âPlease, let me finish, if I donât get this out now, there is no way I will ever say it.â She nodded, âFor some reason when I imagined you and Coleâ, he cleared his throat, âkissing⌠I felt, well at the time I didnât know what I was feeling.â
A look of utter confusion flashed across Anneâs face.
âAnyway, I thought that I should get the actual information from Cole himself and we ended up talking for a while about⌠things⌠The point that Iâm getting to is⌠the feeling that I felt was jealousy.â
Anneâs eyes practically bulged out of her head, and Gilbert swiftly stepped in front of her, placing the two 3 metres away from each other, the same move that Anne had pulled earlier. But this time, it was in an attempt to stop her from running away, âI was insanely jealous that you might have feelings for Cole, and I know now that you too donât have feelings for each other, but even the thought of you two⌠kissing⌠simply makes my blood boilâ Gilbert hadnât realised how loud and fast his voice had become until he finally stopped. Anne seemed overwhelmed with thoughts and feelings. He took a deep breath.
âJealousy, hey?â Smirking at his distress, the smirk turned into a look of confusion, âWhat exactly are you trying to get at, Gilbert?â
âWhat Iâm trying to say isâŚâ Gilbert sighed before shaking his head in disbelief and continuing, âI like you Anne Shirley-Cuthbert. Iâve liked you since the day that we met. I just havenât been able to realise it yet, and Iâm totally fine if you donât reciprocate my feelings. I completely understand. I just didnât-â
Gilbert paused in exasperation, trying to find the right words. The snow became lighter now, and wisps of frost were dancing around them, catching on the tips of their hair and coats.
âYou donât need to continueâ, Gilbertâs eyebrows furrowed in confusion and a small smile rose on Anneâs face, âI know how you feelâ
âOh you do, do you?â Gilbert replied with a raised eyebrow and soft smirk, closing the space between them with a small step.
âI do indeedâ Anne whispered in response before softly biting her lip and awkwardly staring down at her feet. Gilbert gently caressed her cheek and softly raised her chin until their eyes met. Gilbert gingerly lent down and lightly pressed his lips into hers. Sparks erupted and Gilbert better than he had ever felt before. His hands reaching around to cup the back of her head and run his fingers through her gorgeous hair. Their lips slowly separated and their foreheads connected as they regained their breath.
âSo, I suppose this means that you like me back?â Gilbert whispered with a small chuckle.
âI suppose it doesâ Anne replied with a giggle.
Dear Cole,Â
As much as I hate to admit it, you were right. Aunt Josephine especially, our time on this earth is short and we must do things before itâs too late. As you may have guessed by now, I told her. I told Anne that I liked her, and it turned out that she likes me too! I just wrote to tell you that your advice truly paid off, and now, because of you, Anne and I know how we feel towards each other. Iâve never felt better, and for this feeling, I thank you.
Ever since my fatherâs death, I havenât felt whole, but now, I feel the same as I used to. Happy!
I hope to see you and Aunt Josephine again soon,
All the best, and thank you again,
Gilbert
Anne and Gilbert were lying underneath a tree in the Blythe orchard, Anne reading a book and Gilbert writing his letter to Cole. After finally finishing he folded it neatly and placed it inside an envelope. His movement distracted Anne from her reading.
âWhatâs that?â Anne said glancing at the letter in Gilbertâs hand.
âNothingâ Gilbert chuckled slowly, sitting up and sealing the envelope.
âWeâll see about that!â Anne giggled reaching up to grab the letter. Gilbertâs height played to his advantage, and Anne could hardly reach the hand holding the letter high above her. She tried jumping up to grab it but ended up toppling into Gilbert, knocking them both to the ground. The landed underneath a tree in a fit of laughter. After their laughter finally died down they realised how close they had become. Anne lay down facing upwards, her arm intertwined with Gilbertâs.
âHey, Anne?â Gilbert said turning to face upwards
