Edwin spoke truly, followed his heart and his passions every step of the way. He was loud and charming and charismatic. He was willing to die for those passions, and Mathias would have followed him, if he wasn't so scared. Instead, he was willing to let Edwin die.

Now he's older and wiser. Flynn is that second chance to grasp onto someone so carefree and loud and charming. Flynn is fun, he's strong and capable and he's just having a good fucking time at all times. Mathias needs that. He needs to loosen up. He needs to be silly again. He was too scared when he was younger. He's approaching his 50s now, I think he's ready.

Edwin was a roaring fire whose warmth burned so hot that Mathias shied away from the flames out of fear of who he'd become out the other side. Flynn is the ocean, whose riptide has yanked him into the waters, and he is drowning, he can't fight the waves, but now, instead of holding his breath and thrashing and closing his eyes to break the surface, he opens his eyes, and dares to peer into the beauty just once before his lungs fill.
