August of 2017, everyone arrives in Spielberg for the 11th round of the MotoGP season. Marc Marquez is leading the championship with 14 points on Maverick Viñales and 21 points on Andrea Dovizioso.
Marc has just gotten himself two wins (Sachsenring and Brno) while Dovi hasn't snatched a podium since his win in Barcelona on round 7.
On Saturday, Marc qualifies on pole while Dovi gets P2 on the grid. Jorge Lorenzo completes the front row in P3.
Marc Marquez (post race press conference) : Today on the last lap I was thinking about everything, just the championship I forget, a little bit. I was pushing my 100%, I decided to make all in.
After a race containing a handful of overtakes between the top 4 (Dani Pedrosa also joining the party and eventually getting P3 in the race), things got down to a last lap battle between Marc and Dovi for the win, with Marc attempting one last overtake on Dovi in the very last corner.
Andrea Dovizioso (Mig Babol, season 1 - episode 9) : The years of the struggles in Austria, he was in no condition to get to the last corner with me, and he would get there. So I made the masterpiece because I had the [good bike] and I read the situation and reacted perfectly but he wasn't supposed to be there.
Marc Marquez (post race press conference) : You know, I try on the last corner because if not, I cannot go to sleep quiet, you know. I need to try.
Andrea Dovizioso (post race press conference) : I didn't expect the last corner for him to overtake me because there is no space there, no braking. But I hear his engine, the corner before the last, he opens, he was allowed to open the throttle before me because he prepared the corner better than me, so I knew he wanted to try.
And yes, this is where the Dovi hand gesture is coming from.
Andrea Dovizioso (Mig Babol, season 1 - episode 9) : It's not like me, it came to me instinctively. But it wasn't a send-off but as if to say "you got in this time too", not because he did something bad.
They have another moment during the race where Marc gets really close to Dovi and it gave us one of my favorite press con moments (full video here).
Marc Marquez (post press press conference) : But you know, we survived the race.
