abby’s heart races in her chest as she stands in the locker room preparing to pull her hair out of the collar of her scrub shirt, memories of the emergency center flooding into her mind. this hospital is where she grew up, where she trained, where she met her husband, and where they conceived their son. it used to be her safe space away from everything. however, it’s also where she only saw the effects of the cruel world in forms of grievous injuries or illnesses. that’s why she left in the first place. her pregnancy just sealed the deal with her decision to retire, but it was truly all the death she witnessed that resulted in her absence from the place she used to love. and now? she’s returning in an effort to help her former mentor and friend with a short-staffed day. trauma never usually irked her, but seeing the blood on a patient’s handkerchief and hearing the coughing from another on her way in actually made her grimace, despite trying not to. the door creaking open snaps her out of her thoughts, surprise appearing on her expression when she sees robby. a half-hearted grin parts her chapped lips and she finally pulls her long brown hair out of her collar, and quickly snaps a pair of sterile gloves on both hands. an acknowledging nod is then sent to the doctor in front of her as she inhales deeply. nervously.
