there's something happening in british poetry right now and i think it deserves more attention than it's getting.

for a long time the "literary" poetry world had a very specific sound. careful, ironic, standard english, vaguely metropolitan. and if your voice didn't fit that mould — if you had an accent, a dialect, a two-language upbringing, a working-class background — the unspoken message was: smooth that out before you show up.

but that's changing. poets from yorkshire, lincolnshire, belfast, cardiff, the hebrides, birmingham, manchester — they're writing without apology about where they come from. they're writing in scots and gaelic. they're writing about the wide flat fens and pit villages and council estates and migration and grief and community.

and it's not quaint. it's not "local colour". it's urgent, political, alive.
