It’s all a dream. The whole logic of this ep was dream logic. John being slow to realize what the bones were, Sherlock finding a dog dish that never existed, walls falling over, darts hitting three men who no one could have guessed would be standing in those positions or that darts would be needed… Sherlock not being terribly observant, Mycroft not immediately questioning what was up with his movie…I mean, we could go on and on and on.
I am, in general, avoiding reblobbing tin foil hat posts, because I don’t want people to be re-disappointed if it doesn’t pan out, but tfp-as-horror-movie-montage / John’s mind bungalow makes me really, really happy, because it opens up a way to interpret the episode that takes the sting right out of it, regardless of what happens next.
Another thing that supports the idea that we’re in John’s subconscious is John’s care in correcting Mary’s mistake in mixing up The Omen and The Exorcist. John is a horror movie fan–who knew? We do now, and maybe we really do now.
Between this evidence and the leaked chess promo photo that implied John is shot (and, uh, the ending of tld, which all but showed John being shot with an actual gun), I am on board for John’s Mind Bungalow / extended dream theory. It opens up, if nothing else, a wealth of headcanons and fic possibilities going forward, including a proper Garridebs moment.
Of Cookies and active Volcanoes
You might already know that here Sherlock’s projection of Moriarty is quoting the words from John’s blog, which Sherlock was reading on his phone on the plane, because his first case with John was the last blissful thought he wanted to have before taking enough drugs to overdose:
-John’s blog, “The story of how they met” in AGRA’s words. (x)
So MP!Moriarty is talking about the importance Sherlock gives to this night:
“Sherlock Holmes, again, must have sexual impulses because human beings tend to – most human beings, not absolutely all, but that’s the majority. The fact is, he decides to put all that in an iron box to make his brain work better. Of course, the fact that that iron box bounces around and shakes and bangs from the inside is what makes the story interesting. He wants to rise above us like a snowcapped mountain, but he’s actually a volcano, and that’s where the story is. That’s where the story is.”
- Moffat, 2014 [emphasis mine] (x)
Yup. That’s some real hot volcano lava being spewed right there, right after that orgasmic white flash. Is this scene at TAB telling us when exactly was the moment our beloved once-dormant Volcano begun to rumble into life and slowly started to build up the pressure for the eventual violent release? ;P Even more under the cut!

Bringing this back due to recent events. This is one of their big elaborate metaphors for Sherlock’s romantic/sexual feelings for John.
“Sherlock Holmes, again, must have sexual impulses (…) he’s actually a volcano, and that’s where the story is. That’s where the story is.” -Moffat, 2014
“Sherlock will come to a shattering climax.” -Gatiss, 2016
Sherlock is a volcano, and we’re mere weeks away from witnessing his climactic eruption!

The Hope Rooms
Masterpiece of Sam Yates, it shocked me at Encounters Film Festival. Every frame of the film is a work of genious. The writting of David Watson (story and screenplay) is full of true feelings based on real situations. Ciaran Hinds’ and Andrew’s play together is flawless, they will break your heart during that choppy, confused communication and in the end they leave you numb without a word, following the golden rule of short films: show, don’t tell. There are many short films out there, but there are very few that can cause such a powerful catharsis and emotion as this one. I’m honored to get the possibility to be there at UK premiere.
