Sherlock said this very cautiously to John and for a while I thought it was only because he knew he was pushing him during John’s heartbreak, but I now realize these words were hard for Sherlock to say. Think of all that Sherlock did – the destruction and the sacrifice –

simply because John chose her

One thing to know about me is I love scores/soundtracks okay like- I love movies. I love films. And I love scores and soundtracks and !! I could go on forever but you get the point. ANYWAY-

I’m sitting here in my room listening to the score/soundtrack for the 1998 “Parent Trap” (you know, with Lindsay Lohan) for what is the 3rd time this evening and probably the 48487493rd time in my lifetime. For reasons I don’t really know I just love it so much.

JOHN: John Hamish Watson – just if you were looking for baby names.

JOHN: I choose the baby’s name. MARY: Not a chance.

SHERLOCK: William Sherlock Scott Holmes. (…) That’s the whole of it – if you’re looking for baby names. 

This is such wonderful example of why Sherlock and John belong together and John and Mary don’t. 

Both John and Sherlock are offering their full names to each other. And this is a strong contrast to Mary who never gives anyone her real name. 

Of course there is the nearly identical wording as well. 

And if you compare this with Mary’s snappish remark when John - who has been treated cruelly by her - wants to choose the baby’s name, it becomes clear that Mary is demanding and taking what she thinks is her right while John and Sherlock are offering and giving.

This is one of Mary’s functions in the narrative: emphasising the ultimately selfless love between Sherlock and John by setting it off against her selfishness. 

I don’t know who made this but whomever you are, I worship at your feet.

The extent of Mary’s character (how far back her association with Moriarty goes) might not be fully revealed until the last episode, the Series 4 finale.

I’m picturing a series of villainous scenes/a montage showing that she’s been “hiding in plain sight” for nearly all of the series…

as others have speculated, we might see again the written envelope in The Great Game, Mary hiding as a sniper at the pool, Mary being one of the assassins moving near 221B that Mycroft fails to mention in The Reichenbach Fall (as @the-7-percent-solution pointed out recently), Mary shooting the man that shook Sherlock’s hand after John and Sherlock jumped in front of the bus, Mary being there during Moriarty and Sherlock’s confrontation on the roof of St Barts-

And…Mary being involved in Moriarty’s greatest heist of the century in The Tower of London 👀

And since Mary is pretty much the symbol of the danger of heteronormative assumptions, and since even canon Mary felt like a swiftly constructed aside to no-homo up the stories, and protect ACD from accusations that his stories were gay, I think it would be quite nice to go back and show how Mary (the figure head of heteronormativity in Holmes lore) has been been lurking in the shadows the entire time.  Time to shed a little light on the dark truth, I think.
