Sometimes good parenting meaning playing Mozart or Bach for your small children to enjoy. Sometimes good parenting means you turn on 'Ice Ice Baby' and teach your small children the dance moves from the original music video. Yeah. Daddy is going to be so impressed when he gets home.

This is the world in which we live. It's a sobering reminder: hold your family, your freedoms, and your safety close. For each of us who are with our loved ones, who have a good degree of freedom and autonomy, and who are relatively safe from daily warfare, there are a million suffering in ways beyond what we can fathom.

Whenever my kids hear the annoying, off-key organ-grinder sound of an ice cream truck driving past, they might observe out loud, “Oh, there goes the music truck.” Because Mommy and Daddy are horrible liars who don’t want their kids to know what the true purpose of that truck is, because we don’t want to have to argue over expensive frozen desserts at the most inopportune times.

There’s a silver lining to everything; it’s just a matter of seeing it from a new angle each day so it doesn’t tarnish.

It's odd how some places claim us and become definitive parts of who we are, even if we didn't spend much time there. I've spent a little over half of my life in a desert, but right now, my bones are aching for ocean.

I occasionally get these overwhelming urges to not only get outside, but to remain outside. More than just camping—I want to just live out of a tent. On a mountain or a beach or somewhere without electric lights and cars and lots of people. I want the lonesome planet. And now with a husband and three kids, that's probably not happening, and that's fair. But heaven knows, today more than ever, I want to just run out into the trees until the stars find me and I'm breathing in the cold quiet of a mountain somewhere

Something tells me that the children's toy section on JC Penny's website doesn't make the distinction between minors and adult children.

One of the very, very few musicals I adore. I weep every time I go to see it live, and I'm excited to see how it all translates to film.
