They didnāt talk about the kiss.
The afternoon melted slowly into evening, light fading fromthe sky as the reception began and the guests celebrated. Yuuri joined in, applaudingpolitely as the cake was cut and watching as the happy couple stepped out intothe centre of the room for their first dance. Viktor was by his side, gazing withrapt attention and staying unusually silent throughout the whole thing.
They didnāt talk about the kiss.
Part of Yuuri, the rational part, knew that all of it hadjust been for show. That was what the whole weekend had been, one long game ofmake-believe. And somehow, just for a second, he had allowed himself to be justas convinced as the crowds around them. But no matter how real the kiss hadfelt, he had heard from Viktorās own mouth that they would never be together. AndViktor wouldnāt lie. Not in a private conversation with Chris when he expectedno-one to overhear. No matter how carried away they might both have gotten duringthe kiss later that day, that one fact remained indisputable.
But there was another part of Yuuri, the traitorous partthat lived deep within his heart, that refused to believe it. Viktor had kissedhim like a starving man tasting food for the first time. All desperation andhunger and fingers digging into Yuuriās skin so hard they left bruises in theirwake. Surely, his heart cried, that couldnāt all have been for show. Surelythere must have been something more.
As the evening went on, more and more couples began to spillout onto the dance floor. Smiling and laughing as they twirled each other around,each set of two wrapped up in their own little world. Eventually, Viktoroffered out his hand without a word and Yuuri took it, allowing himself to belead out into the centre of the room.
āItās just to blend ināthe rational part of his brain reminded him as they began to dance. āBut youāve dreamed about dancing with himsince you were a childā his heart insisted as he allowed Viktor to lead himinto a graceful spin. And no amount of reason could stop the thrill that Yuurifelt as Viktor held him close as they moved together around the dance floor.
For a while the songs remained upbeat, allowing the two ofthem to dance with ease, weaving between the other couples stumbling aroundthem. But eventually, the music slowed until everyone around them was simply swayingtogether, holding each other close and gazing into each otherās eyes. Yuurimoved towards Viktor instinctively and the other man pulled him in until theywere almost chest to chest, swaying along to the beat.
āYuuri, about what happened earlierā¦ā Viktor began as they continuedto dance. They were so close together that Yuuri was sure Viktor would be ableto feel the jump of the pulse in his wrists and see the beads of sweat coatinghis brow.
āDonāt worry about it,ā Yuuri cut in before Viktor could sayanother word. He didnāt need to hear another rejection from Viktor. Overhearingone by accident was bad enough, he wasnāt sure if he could handle Viktor sayingone to his face as well. āI know it didnāt mean anything.ā
Viktor blinked a couple of times, hand tightening slightlyin Yuuriās grip. Their dancing took them under one of the huge chandeliers thatlined the room and the glittering lights reflected strangely in Viktorās eyes,making them look glistening, almost wet.
āOf course,ā Viktor replied, voice slightly rough. He pausedfor a second, eyes flicking to the side. Evaluating. Then he turned back toYuuri and the strange look in his eyes was gone. āI only meant to say that youwere a very good kisser. Even if it was just for show, I enjoyed myself.ā
For a few seconds Yuuri simply stared, trying to gauge the sincerityof Viktorās words. When he saw no hint of teasing in Viktorās face however henodded, hoping the action would cover the turmoil that was suddenly raging inhis heart.
āI did too,ā he managed to choke out, praying that his voicestayed level.
The slow, sensual music continued and they moved closer as theydanced, drawn together by the beat. Yuuri could feel the heat of Viktorās skinnext to his, could hear every breath that passed Viktorās lips.
āThere are plenty of people here,ā Yuuri murmured. He wasnātsure why he allowed himself to say it. Only that it felt right. If he only hadone single weekend with Viktor, one shining moment, surely he was allowed tomake it count? They had come this far already, why not a little more? āIf youwanted to put on another show? Just to make sure theyāre convinced.ā
It was a weak excuse. He knew it. He was sure that Viktorknew it too. But before he could pull away in embarrassment Viktor spoke, hisvoice as low as Yuuriās and his words brushing against Yuuriās ear.
āIf thatās what you want,ā he murmured and oh, how Yuuri wanted.
This time, he wasnāt sure which of them moved first. Onlythat one minute they were dancing, bodies pressed close. And the next, Viktorāslips were on his and his world exploded into a kaleidoscope of sensation.
Maybe it all was for show. Maybe it wasnāt. But in that perfectmoment, Yuuri forgot to care.
