It is said that during this period, the ancestors’ spirits will come to visit their families; at the end of the festival, lanterns are used to guide the spirits back to their graves.

Hozuki (鬼灯): Physalis alkekengi (also known as Chinese lantern plant/Japanese lantern plant) is a plant species native to Asia, characterised by the large, bright red papery calyces covering its fruits. Due to its resemblance to lanterns, it is often used as decorations and offerings during Obon, and is seen as a symbol of the festival.
