Okay okay so I love looking for and reading bad brackendra fics cause they’re fucking hilarious.

But some of them are good, like really good

It got me thinking, about the logistics of Bracken’s immortality and Kendra’s age again. About Ronodin’s immortality. About Lena’s

My first impression is ew, especially with Bracken, right? But Brandon wrote it so it’s ew, even if unintentional, he did.

Would it be wrong in every situation, no matter what?

We know that Brandon claims their minds are young, which does justify some things, except for the fact that their actions prove otherwise. If their actions proved Brandon’s words would it be okay? Would we believe it?

What if they genuinely felt like that? What if they were genuinely at the maturity of that age? A lot of the reason dating laws exist is because of the difference in maturity. And even though I don’t think 18 should be the cutoff, it’s why it’s there. 

I mean, I still find it weird when people think once a child is 18 it’s suddenly okay to like them. Because your brain stops maturing at around 25. For me, it’s all about maturity. If their maturity was genuinely at that level, would it be okay? Would it be separate enough from their wisdom and experiences from their long life?

Another thing that got me thinking was an essay I wrote for my English 1010 class. One of the sources provided mentioned the brain affected things like attraction. 

This source provided an example of how a tumor, pushing against where attraction is created, forms pedophilic thoughts and urges in someone. And while yes, this is bad, could it be the same in other scenarios? Could the way the brain is arranged cause different, uncontrollable, emotions and feelings?

If their brain was arranged in such a way, if the part that controlled their emotions was shaped in such a way, they wouldn’t have any control over it. It’s not some malicious or creepy feeling anymore, to them at least.

If they were genuinely at the same maturity, genuinely had no control over their attraction, because that’s just how they were made, how they were built, would it still be creepy? 

Could they be considered the same age if their maturity was at the same level?

It’s like, I’m attracted to people my age. Because that’s how it should be, that’s how I was made. That’s how the thing in my brain is shaped. I’m not attracted to little children, because it’s wrong, and it’s not how I was made. If all of those immortal beings were made to mature at a certain rate, and made to be attracted to certain people, are their feelings valid, or is their species as a whole just wrong?

Saying that an immortal’s age is like a mortal kid’s age, is NOT saying they are equivalent in maturity or life experience.

It means the immortal is to older immortals, what the mortal is to older mortals.

But if you switch that, the immortal is ANCIENT to mortals

And the mortal is a newborn baby to immortals

Those kind of ages aren’t comparable directly and in brackens case, he very much proves so.

Lena and Patton worked since not only was Patton into adulthood and had travelled far and wide across the world of magical creatures… Lena HADNT

Lena had only known her pond, the creatures around and in it, and what she learned from other creatures like the fairy queen she is guarding the shrine of.

Patton and Lena were on equal footing in their relationship. Lena hadn’t learned all those amazing skills we hear about until after Patton died, her maturity was genuinely like that of a mortal around Pattons age when she left the pond.

Bracken, however, proves time and time again he’s more mature than a 15 year old mortal.

Bracken braves several challenges with ease like the grove of trees on their way to the fairy shrine, even battling Warren to safety and keeping his own head. He KNOWS many creatures by name, proving he’s been traveling and seen much of the magical world Kendra hasn’t.

In dragonwatch it’s mentioned when he used to fight with Ronodin. Constantly in the series he’s proving hes much more capable than any actual child would be, just less so than his parents who are older than him and have seen more.

As much as people can argue he was in prison, and that’s like Lena in the pond, it was almost nothing compared to what his lifespan is implied to have been. Not to mention the only people bracken seems to get overpowered by are those who are familiar with him/his way of fighting, not just any strong enemy or trial like Kendra and Seth are challenged by.

we wouldn't consider a 13 year old dog to be young because it's 13, we would consider it to be old because of dogs life expectancies.

13 is young for a human because of our life expectancies.

Bracken is young for an immortal. Kendra is young for a mortal. And in the end, Bracken becomes what a mortal would be around the age 17, even though he has lived who knows how many years prior, he is now, by human scale, around 17.

I guess maybe it would be like if you turned a 5 yo dog into a human??? it would like??? not be a little kindergartener, but an adult??? if that makes any sense at all

If we turned the metaphorical dog into a human, they would still only have knowledge of a five year old dog, not that of an older human since that’s all found through living and learning. (Also note dogs have an entirely different mind and way/capability of learning, so turning them human is a massive and unpredictable change. Technically the life spans aren’t even comparable because of these mental differences, which is what I see between immortals and mortals)

Although bracken would physically be like a 15 year old, as that’s where his life span would be equivalent to, that’s the only similarity between his version of 15 and an actual mortals.

He’d still have the ‘boundless’ knowledge of an immortal who’s lived thousands of years, all of that training, meeting people and creatures, battling alongside Ronodin, doing whatever it actually is unicorns do— wouldn’t just go away, he would still be far more mature than a 15 year old. He is more knowledgeable and capable when it comes to the magic world than even Patton.

Think about Lena when Kendra met her. Lena mentions how she had been a nurse, trapeze artist, set swimming records, a masseuse, a chef even, etc. and it’s only been a few generations by now, hasn’t it?

so far in my rewrite ive been following the length of normal chapters. problem is, that takes forever. would people prefer shorter but more frequent chapters, or longer and less frequent? this is assuming people will actually read it lmao
