A/n this whole idea was based off of @flickershawn âs ask/post. The idea attracted me so much I had to write it. Hope ya enjoy <3
Waking up in Australia is always a shock. I remember the day I told Andrew that I was taking time off. His eyes bugged out of his head and asked if I was crazy. Recently being single and tired (as well as hated) of who I became, I had enough of what I became myself. I moved back to Toronto after living in LA at first was just for the album, but then it became an even longer stay. After going back home I started to feel myself, but still felt lost. Felt like I needed to get away, and not for a couple of days or even weeks. I knew I needed time to be alone. Time to explore. So, I bought a first-class plane ticket to Australia with my huge backpack ready to explore the land of Australia. My tall frame wasnât used to sitting in a small seat. My legs were crammed, and some kid kept on kicking the back of my seat, but I really didnât mind it. I finally felt normal for a while. Before a teenage girl sat next to me and talked to me about, well me.
After the horribly long plane ride I started my journey from place to place not having a destination really. Living out of my backpack with stares left and right. I didnât know if those stares were from a celebrity walking the streets with no security or people seeing some random person walking the streets. Clearly a tourist.
Sitting in a cafĂŠ, with an Australian language book in my face, as the people here have slang that is way to hard to understand. It always stumbled me. Some things I understood, but everything else made me look at the person so confused. After telling the young waitress that I wasnât ready to order yet for the third time I felt horrible asking for another couple of minutes, just wanting to get a simple coffee.
I glance up seeing a young woman sitting across from me, with bronzed skin looking at the menu while also having some sort of book by her side.
âAlright. What can I get ya?â The young girl says with her thick accent waiting for my order.
âUh, yeah. Can I have some tea?â I ask and hear a small chuckle coming from the bronzed girl and look at her with confusion.
âUh, tea doesnât start til around four.â She says tapping her pen on her note pad making Shawn look confused, all he wanted was nice cup of hot tea, and they didnât have any? Or they did but only served it at four?
âno, no. Tea. Ya know like the- âI say scrolling through my book trying to find the word for tea.
âmorning tea.â I hear someone say making me look up seeing the beautiful bronzed girl looking at me from her seat, and the waitress nodding her head. âAlso, the numba seven brekkie.â She says with a small nod and the waitress nods and walks away.
âThank you.â I say looking at her with a squint as the sun was in my eyes. âwould you like to sit?â I ask gesturing to the empty seat thatâs in front of me. Â
âNo, thatâs alright. Glad I could help though.â She says waving her hand at me and I lets out a sigh.
I want a friend. I want someone to talk to besides my parents or friends from home. I wants someone to talk with at breakfast or stroll the streets and eating ice cream âYou sure? I mean youâre alone, as am I. Maybe we could sit together and well I donât know it was just dumb. Forget itâ I say shaking my head in disbelief. Keeping my head down feeling super embarrassed and pretending to look at the map like I know what Iâm looking at when I hear the metal chair scrape on the concrete making me look up at the location of the noise. Â
âWhere you from?â She asks with a thick accent making me love her voice. It was sweet and gentle, but the accent was rough and prominent. The mix made me melt. The mix made me want to listen to her voice for hours.
âuh, Toronto.â I say nodding at the waitress for placing my cup of tea on the table and moving over the young womanâs food to my table.
âAh, I thought you were American.â She says nodding taking a sip of her iced coffee. Â âso, why Australia?â She asks again as a huge plate of food is placed in front of me, and her food is soon big plate of food being placed in front of her.
âUh, well needed a change of scenery. Wasnât really a great person. Wait let me rephrase. The things happening just werenât the best. Was starting to hang around the group of people that werenât the best.â I say seeing her nod while starting to dig into her food. âSo, what did you order me?â I ask with a small chuckle seeing her with a mouthful of food and letting out a laugh.
âItâs what the owner calls it a âtourist sampleâ gives you a bit of everything. Itâs a traditional Aussie brekkieâ She says with a smile and pointing to the food thatâs closest to me. âthat is toast. Its wheat, not many people here like white.â She says sliding over the butter over to me with the small butter knife. âThat-âShe says pointing to the sausages that are right next to the toast. âis, beef brekkie sausages, next to that is baked beans.â She says pointing to the beans making me laugh at the fact that I will be eating beans for breakfast. âThat is mushrooms, in butter. Which is the worst. Its nasty.â She says contorting her face and giving it a disgusting look.
âMushrooms are good!â I say with a shocked voice and she shakes her head in a no.
âTwo fried eggs, and a couple of slices of grilled tomato with bacon.â She says taking her fork away from my plate and back on hers. âNow, dig in. Enjoy a Aussie brekkie.â She says with wide arms with a huge smile.
âNow, what do you have, and why does it look so amazing.â I ask pointing my fork towards her plate.
âThis? Itâs Jonnyâs famous French toast with fruit on top.â She says looking down at the big plate of fruit in front of her.
âThere is French toast under there?!â I ask my eyes bugging out shoving my face with a piece of bread.
âYes! The fruit here is amazing. Truly.â She says with a nod taking a piece of fruit into her mouth. âOh! Whatâs your name?â She asks shoving more fruit into her mouth.
âShawn. Iâm Shawn.â I say with a bit of confusion in my voice. âAnd who are you?â I ask shoving my fork with some beans onto it.
âIâm y/n. âShe says blushing at her name.
âthatâs a beautiful name. Itâs different.â I say nodding while starting to eat my eggs and she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and her cheeks get a pink hue to them.
Hours after talking to each other this makes me feel so normal. She treats me like me. Treats me like a normal person. I donât want this breakfast to end.
âso, yeah I bring this book everywhere. Your slang is so different from other. Itâs insane.â I say holding up an âAll About Australiaâ book and waving it making her laugh. âAND, it shows some good places to visit.â I say going through the book finding one of the folded pages and hearing a groan from her. âWhat?â I say with a confused look on my face.
âNothing, its just. Youâre backpacking through Australia to âfind yourselfâ and youâre going to go to the most basic places. You need to get out more. Go to Barron falls, and Paronella Park!â She says throwing her hands up. âYou have to explore.â She says again.
âI guess I need a personal tour guide.â Â I say looking at her, as she is looking at the ocean waves, and gives a small nod. âwill you be my personal tour guide?â I ask looking at my nails and see her at the corner of my eye looking shocked.
âare you insane?!â She asks with an annoyed laugh and bouncing off the ledge and walking away, with me swinging around to chase after her.
âIâm serious y/n. Be my personal tour guide. Take me places that no tourist knows about. I want to look at this tour book and want to throw it away.â I say shoving the book between our chests.
âwhatâs in it for me?â She asks crossing her arms over her chest and standing her ground even though she has a petite frame.
âmemories. I donât know. What do you want in return?â I ask with excitement in my voice. âIf you want a drink every night then thatâs what is in for me. If you want memories, then thatâs whatâs in it for you. Whatever you want. Just be my tour guide, and maybe a friend.â I say shrugging seeing her facial expression changes to something a lot softer.
âLet me think about it.â She says nodding her head and uncrosses her arms and hands Shawn her phone. âhere place your numba in here. Iâll let you know.â She says unlocking her phone and handing it to me and I canât remove the smile from my face.
âTake your time. I have no where special to be.â I say quickly letting her know Iâm in no rush/ After placing my number in her phone, she places her phone in her khaki shorts and I take out mine and she looks confused. âoh, you expect me to give you my numba, donât you?â She asks with a small laugh. Maybe a little cocky.
âwell, uh y/n that is how it works.â I say scratching the back of my head with embarrassment.
âI know, but I donât know how I feel about you yet. Yeah, youâre sweet, but maybe too sweet. Who knows you could be a serial killer on escape from Canada.â She says with a shrug making me choke on my own spit.
âwhat will make you trust me? I promise, Iâm a good guy.â I say practically begging for trust.
âThere is a tradition in Australia. Itâs a pact.â She says crossing her arms back over her chest and looking at her from side to side making sure no one is ease dropping on her. âYou get bit by a Waikiki spider.â
âA-a what?â I stutter looking at her with confusion.
âA Waikiki spider. Itâs what the natives call a âtruth serumâ.â She says leaning her body weight on the ledge waiting for me to say something. âBack hundreds of years when new people asked for trust, they were asked to get a from bite from a Waikiki spider. Not many people wanted to, especially after they heard what happens to themâ She says making my skin crawl.
âw-what happens to them?â I ask in a choked whisper sounding like iIâm losing my voice.
âYou get a fever, hallucinations. You will say things. Lots of things.â She says adding to what she said giving me a poker face. âso, what do you say?â She asks raising her eyebrow at me.
âI uh- Waikiki spider huh? Is that like poisonous? Like deadly?â I ask scratching the back of my head and watching her unraveling her arms and starting to walk away. âIf it means that it shows that I am a trustworthy guy, then Iâll do it.â I say keeping my eyes closed wishing I didnât say the words I did.
âreally?â She asks popping her hip and looking at me with her big blue eyes. âyou will get bitten by a spider all to prove to me that youâre worthy? Wow you really are Canadian.â She says walking closer to me in a slow walk.
âyeah! If it means something to you.â I say throwing my hands up it immediately slapping my thighs.
She walks closer to me, no more than a couple of inches to me. I look down at her, with a small smile wanting to kiss her so bad but know she would probably slap me and say something like âare you mad, I barley know youâ so I hold back. âwanna hear a secret?â She asks in no more than a whisper and I nod my head slowly keeping my eyes on her. âyouâre so gullibleâ She says turning on her heels and walking away looking back at me with a huge smirk on her face.
âwait, so there is no Waikiki spider?â I ask in a shout and see a little kid with his parents next to me and lets out a small giggle.
Itâs a little short, but it just came to my head and hopefully I will be able to think of part 2. I decided to use y/n instead of an actual name as Iâm experimenting. You will still have lots of detail as to what she looks like (sorta), just wont have the aspect of a placed name for her. Anyways hope you enjoy!! Reblog if you enjoyed.
