Some people only apologize to restore access, not to repair harm.
i love reading, i love thinking about what i am currently reading, i love thinking about what i am going to read next, i love being privileged enough to be able to read, read, read, and read so much that i never tire of it
i'm slowly forgetting your face
“No one remembered my birthday-” Well, but did YOU tell anyone it was coming up and you wanted to celebrate it with them?
“I wish someone would see through it when I tell people I’m fine-” Well, but have YOU considered not lying when people ask you how you’re doing?
“I am so resentful of my friend because they keep doing this thing that really bothers me-” Well, but have YOU directly communicated that the thing is bothering you?
“I am burning out because my friend keeps expecting me to help them with serious struggles-” Well, but have YOU tried to establish the boundaries you need to feel okay?
“No one ever asks me about this thing I really care about-” Well, but have YOU brought it up yourself?
“I miss my friend but they haven’t texted me-” Well, but have YOU been reaching out to them?
Sometimes people are mean, uncaring assholes, in which case you get to be mad. But sometimes you just need to communicate better. Try communication before you assume someone doesn’t care!
Having someone who knows you on such a deep level that they see past your mask, or sense you need a check in is such a deep satisfying fantasy. It’s up there with living in a cottagecore farm, or buying all your friends houses when you win the lottery. But you have to make peace with the fact that this is also a fantasy. It is unfair to expect people to “just know” when to respect your boundaries or to push them.
Being cared for is not a fantasy. But you have to let people know you need it. And you have to understand that sometimes they will let you down. Just like you totally could live in a cute farm, but you still have to shovel shit, and the crops sometimes die anyway. Or maybe you win the lottery, but you still have to manage your money and learn real estate law.
The fantasy isn’t the caring, the fantasy is not having to do the work. And it sucks. It’s embarrassing. But like the meme says, it’s not rotten if it’s YOU. So do it for yourself.
“The fantasy isn’t the caring, the fantasy is not having to do the work”! Thank you for that addition. Because it’s not a naive expectation to want someone to care to treat you right. But it requires communication and mutual effort to actually get there

filled out that "performative male traits" checklist that's going around and while I didn't go in with any particularly high expectations I was still kind of thrown by how few of the 100ish items on the list actually seem to be any kind of performance at all. there was, like, one question specifically copping to posting lists of books that you've never actually read, which I suppose counts, but many other questions that seem to have deemed actually reading books to also be performative. reading a book, ESPECIALLY in public where anyone might see you, is apparently a huge performative male trait, which I guess makes me extremely guilty given that I'm prone to the ultimate nerd maneuver of reading while I walk to or from work. maybe I can get away with that, since I'm a woman, but it seems for men the only safe option is to either keep your reading to yourself or maybe never become literate in the first place, to be safe.
owning or god forbid using tote bags is performative, apparently, so that's another strike against me. enjoying matcha is bad for reasons that are lost on me since I'm not a coffee or tea guy, but I assume that if you are then the nature of matcha sins is probably totally rational. making playlists is bad, taking photos is bad, somehow even decorating your house with the photos you've taken is apparently bad. having a labubu also is suspect, and while I do agree broadly with criticism of overproduced and overpriced fad items that are inevitable landfill fodder and operate as a shadowy gambling system that's a solidly gender neutral criticism, whereas the issue here seems to be that a man engaging in an act of silliness is innately suspect.
it's really giving this tweet if I'm being honest
look it's not that men need me to fight for their right to knit or listen to Phoebe Bridgers but as rising social conservatism leads young women to glamorize being financially dependent stay at home girlfriends and eschew their birth control, mayhaps we should think twice about where the eagerness to demonize a man for owning a bag comes from.
currently working on ref sheets and had this thought to remind yall
When you’re busy 🫐
Accept that exercise needs to be a non-negotiable part of your life.
Eat sufficient protein at every meal. Not because it’s currently a buzzword, but because you should have always been doing that and need to keep it up even when a new food group inevitably trends.
Walk whenever you can. Calls, errands, waiting, etc.
You deserve proper rest even if you didn’t get everything done.
Keep healthy staples on autopilot and easily accessible. Things that don’t need to be cooked, 5 minute meals, snacks you can toss in your bag, etc.
Water before and after caffeine.
Ten minutes of movement beats zero.
Batch cook once, eat well all week. If not full meals then whatever key ingredients you can.
Protect your mornings from chaos. Let them be as absolutely slow as your responsibilities allow it to be.
Train for health, strength, and longevity as your top priority. You don’t have to strive for a specific visual outcome.
Stretch, even if it’s while you wait for your pot of water to boil or are letting the bathtub fill up.
Limit liquid calories.
Create a simple, repeatable routine.
Book checkups before there’s a problem.
Remember: being busy is not a reason to abandon healthy habits. It’s just time to rework them.
A Conversation with Richard Siken by Thomas Hobohm
This a a reminder to not fall victim to the sunk-cost fallacy. Just because you invested time and energy into something, does not mean you should indefinitely waste more time and energy on it, if you decide it’s not what you want anymore. This goes for anything, from books, to relationships, to jobs, to hobbies, etc.
If it’s not serving you anymore, move on.
This is honestly one of the places I find Marie Kondo's advice most helpful. I stop, look at the thing I've spent time and money on only to realize I dislike, and I say, "Thank you for teaching me something about myself and my preferences. I think I've learned this particular lesson and we can part ways now."
And then I don't feel like I "wasted" things or made a mistake. I just tried one path of learning about myself, learned something, and now it's time for a different path. Works a lot better for my brain.

it never fails to surprise me how some people will simply take every single thing in a story at face value and assume that what the characters are saying or doing or thinking must always be true even when all of the context clues are screaming the opposite
I was gonna make a post that just said “eww why’s it warm in October” but then I remembered this Tweet I saw earlier that I also wanna share
