First up, thank you for the work you're doing here--this blog has been an incredible resource and help throughout my career so far! This year I'm lucky to work with some slightly bigger publishers than usual, but there's been a tendency of me spending 80% of the time leading up to the deadline just waiting on feedback (over two weeks, I'm used to 1-5 days for self-pub/small press/comics). Is this just the way things are because more people get involved, or is it a European/bad luck situation?
WELCOME TO PUBLISHING, THE LAND OFΒ βHURRY UP AND WAITβ
This is super normal. Thereβs a huge approver chain in publishing, (editor, publisher, author, authorβs agent, authorβs friends, authorβs cat, marketing, sales, sales reps, store buyers, etc) so things take a long time if they get snagged in that process. To compensate, I donβt set hard final deadlines - Iβll tell an artistΒ βwe need thumbs in 2-3 weeks, then weβll set another deadline once I have feedback. Weβre aiming to have final art in time for this big sales meeting 3 months from now.βΒ I expect work back roughly within 1-2 weeks of feedback given. My artists know not to freak out if things slide.
How to deal with this on the artist end? Know this is normal and not hearing does not mean thereβs something wrong with your work. Remember, an AD is taking your work, then cheerleading it down that huge approver chain. At the outset of a job, you can say how long roughly should I expect to wait for feedback? Or if youβre just getting nervous about a previously set deadline coming up quick, you can email the AD and say:β Iβm concerned about the deadline we initially set. If feedback doesnβt come in time, can we push that deadline back a bit?β Usually the answer is yes, bc the delay is not your fault. But often, sending that email helps the AD bc they can forward it to their approvers andΒ βshake the treeβ a bit.
As always, communication is key. If youβre getting anxious, just let the AD know. Not in aΒ βHow dare you not give feedback donβt you know the deadline is comingβ way but in aΒ βhey, feeling anxious about this, is everything ok over thereβ way. Which is good advice for any AD, not just publishing.
