Shiro was nervous. He was about to meet Lance’s family for the first time and he didn’t know how they’d react. Whether they’d even like him or if they would make Lance break up with him on the spot.
Thankfully, Lance was right beside him the whole time, and it turned out to be a good time. Lance’s mother had prepared a huge meal, and his sisters baked a cake. Shiro quickly learned that, no matter the occasion, the entire family was there to celebrate.
After dinner, Lance had been pulled into his old room with his sisters, probably to gossip about their relationship, leaving Shiro alone to fend for himself for a while. He helped clean the dishes with Mamá (as she told him to call her, rather than Mrs. McClain), then went into the living room with the boys. He watched the game with them for a while, but he got bored without Lance beside him to make quips about each of the players.
Suddenly, a small hand was on his arm, and he looked down to see Lance’s niece holding a piece of paper.
“It’s you and tío,” her little voice said, and she held up a scribbly crayon drawing of what Shiro assumed was he and Lance holding hands.
“Is this for me?” he smiled, and took the paper when she nodded her head. “Thank you so much.”
She giggled and pulled on him to follow her, taking him down into the hallway into her very pink room. He sat on the floor and she showed him a bunch of drawings of various people and things that he couldn’t really make out, but still praised her dedication.
By the time Lance had come out of the gossip session, Shiro had donned a crown and feather boa, and was having a tea party with the girl and a couple stuffed animals.
“What are you doing?” Lance smiled, leaning against the doorway of the very pink room.
Shiro looked up, a little surprised at their thoroughly dignified banquet being interrupted and simply said “Tea party.”
“Oh, I see,” Lance laughed. “Unfortunately, party princesses, it’s time for bed.”
“Aww,” Shiro and Lance’s niece both said, but he gave her a high five and helped put away the crowns and boas before following Lance to the guest bedroom.
“I know you said you want to get married before we talk about having kids, but seeing you sitting there having a tea party with my niece tonight made me really want to adopt a little girl,” Lance said as they got ready for bed.
“A little girl? Wouldn’t that be hard for two men?” Shiro asked.
He knew more than anyone that being two men didn’t mean anything, but he was scared. He loved kids, wanted to have some with Lance — eventually — but he didn’t want to do it wrong and mess them up.
“You’d be a great dad, Takashi,” Lance said reassuringly. “I already knew that, but today only proved it more.”
Lance walked over and placed a hand on Shiro’s cheek, making the man look at him.
Shiro smiled and pressed a kiss to the fat part of Lance’s palm before wrapping his arms around Lance’s middle.
