[•] Backstory on foto: I was scouting a film location on a piece on school starting Sept 1 in Ukraine. I saw the shadows being created by the people so I began shooting and shooting, people not liking it, still I kept on. Then suddenly a little girl comes running into frame with her mum behind her and I just took my changes willing to get screamed at long as I got the shots. As she pass me, she gave me a looked that said everything, I said thank you, I think she understood I was an American and gave me a pass. Today is September 1, the day when children in Ukraine usually start their school year. Due to Russian invasion students of 270 schools will not go back there because they have been destroyed. More than 2400 schools were damaged. Most children will study online, only a minority of Ukrainian children will be able to attend schools physically because very few of them have reopened. In order to reopen, a school must have a bomb shelter. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian children,who were forced to become refugees, will go to schools abroad. But the most heartbreaking situation is on Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. Parents are under pressure to send their kids to school with a new, Russian curriculum, threatened they children will be taken away from them if they refuse If they agree, kids will be brainwashed with Russian propaganda, taught that Ukraine is an artificial state and all Ukrainians are Nazis. In a few years, students who graduate from schools in occupied territories, might be sent to kill Ukrainians, as happened in Donbas, Crimea.
