There was a certain something in the air as Bedelia spoke - a frisson of nerves. Kit could’ve imagined it of course but, call it woman’s intuition or just good sense, but the other’s words were tinged with regret. Family, even the very concept of it, could do that to people. There were such expectations placed, especially on women, to want to want it, to need to provide it, to nurture.

Yet it alluded some and caused such heartbreak in the process.

But maybe it wasn’t that which was giving her new acquaintance such pause. Maybe it as something altogether more……haunting.    A lost love? A trauma? Maybe a mix of both.

She certainly would never be so rude as to pry. But if Bedelia wanted to talk about it, she’d listen.

“Yes, escape is needed. I mainly work out of central London but get back home on the weekends that my kids aren’t with their father. I need the wide open green spaces and fresh air. Don’t get me wrong - I love London but…..it is rather exhausting”.

Their food as delivered, which resulted in a small pause to conversation, just long enough for cutlery to be picked and wine glasses to be refilled. And then, Kit spoke again.

“Whereabouts is your English house?”.

The troublesome past that haunted her was not something that she allowed herself to face. She chose to ignore the situation in Paris that had momentarily followed her to New York. She admired the fact that it had made her a stronger person, but to dwell on it any longer made things worse. Even if it still haunted her... 

Perhaps one day she would trust someone enough to finally tell them the truth of all that had happened, but currently she remained locked away hidden and denying. 

“I can understand that. The city can be rather exhausting. See for me, it’s a vacation so I spend most of my time sight seeing, restaurants, Royal Albert Hall. So it’s stimulating but I can control that stimulation...” She could imagine living in London all the time would be a lot. 

“This is the real world, my love. Everything where you come from is illusion… Distractions. Bright lights and busy work. Humans will do anything to forget that they’re animals.”

She can tell from Bedelia’s body language that she’s uncomfortable. Val takes this as a sign that she’s on the right track with her line of questioning. It’s necessary that she doubt herself, or at least doubt the person she used to be. It’s the only way to grow.

“Out here, you find out who you really are. You either live or you die. There’s no more faking it.”

Talking about herself is always a very touchy subject. There were million things that Bedelia du Maurier never wanted to come to terms with. She hated thinking about the things in her life that she had allowed to happen. She brought extra unnecessary suffering on herself. Was that why she had stayed here so long or was this the first time that she truly felt safe and real? 

My personal opinion [which is bound to be different than someone else’s opinion] varies depending on whom I write with, the chemistry that sparks, but it’s hard to spend that close proximity with someone and not feel at least an ounce of love or very, very high respect which can also blend and fade into admiration which burns into love. I would also like to touch on -- when does he kill her? 

Perhaps the end of the season three, leading into a season four - Bedelia’s death would have happened. It’s very, very possible. However, we never got a season four and the last scene of season three - she was very, very much alive. Miserable, but alive. He ate her the first chance he got, but she knew that was coming. It was not a surprise. 

That is, of course, all my opinion.

“I knew that you intended to eat me; and I knew that you had no intention of eating me hastily.”

“You make make a meal of me yet, Hannibal---”

          Hannibal rested his chin over her shoulder, ❝ Nightmares again? ❞ he questioned softly, pressing his nose into her skin. ❝ Adrenaline clings to you the same way that the seasons hold onto one another, dragging- ❞ he pauses, trailing his fingers up the center of her stomach, and over her sternum before falling to rest around her throat, ❝ one into the next. Do the images that haunt you when you are asleep continue to torment you through the day, Bedelia? ❞ His grip remains light, guiding her head to the side before he can press a kiss to alabaster skin. Her pulse throbbed beneath his lips. 

          Reluctantly, he parts from the embrace, adjusted the temperature of the water a bit, lowering it slightly. ❝ Would you tell me about them? ❞

She took a sharp breath, closing her eyes. She hated how he could determine that just by being in the same room as her. It wasn’t a hard guess, but it could still be frustrating. It often made her feel completely naked and bare at all times. “How--” She began to say before pausing to focus on the feeling of his fingers dancing along skin. “--how do you know that adrenaline is caused by a nightmare and not by you...?” He could easily cause an overload of adrenaline. She never did know what to expect from him. Would he eat her today? It was also very hard not to suffer a spike in adrenaline when he continued to do that.
