It made sense the way Shadow explained it, but Avery couldnβt help but still be apprehensive. Shadow assured her that it wasnβt common, but just because it was rare, that didnβt mean it didnβt happen. She didnβt want to be taken away from her family.Β βIβve only talked to her once and it was awkward. I mostly just see her in my familiar form,β she admitted.Β βI donβt even know what Iβd say to her. Sheβs confided in me without knowing Iβve been listening to every word. What if she hates me for being dishonest about that?β
βwell, as a witch, she should first and foremost understand that familiars donβt just walk up and sayΒ βhey, iβm your familiar and youβre my witchβ. you have to be sure you belong to each other. with as strong as your pull to her is, itβs safe to say sheβs your witch - whether she responds well to that or not is up in the air. unfortunately, we donβt get to pick our witches or our familiars, so thatβs definitely something you both would have to work out if it goes down the wrong road. but it could end up going really well, so i would let her know as gently as possible. the longer you wait, the longer you go without your bond and your bond is important.β

βIdeas for what?β he asked, not sure if she meant ideas when it came to the show or something else. He grabbed another little pint of the chocolate chunk and then one of the flavor he knew Abby liked and also one for Lucas before letting the freezer door shut.Β
βto freak the husband out. i have to make his life a little frustrating as payback for constantly renovating the house and letting me find out the hard way. iβm tired of falling into holes that werenβt there the day before,β shadow said with a small laugh.
Β Β mytarnishedsilverβ:
Avery nodded.Β βI felt a pull toward this one witch in the city β¦ I donβt know if itβs her magic reaching out to mine or mine reaching out to hers, but she seems β¦ lost. Lonely. But Iβm afraid of telling her that Iβm drawn to her because I donβt want the same experience my ex had.β She hesitated.Β βI donβt know if sheβd do that to me, but I also donβt know if she wouldnβt.β Having a soulmate sounded nice, though.
βwell, sheβs a witch, so she knows how familiars work - hopefully. and you canβt have more than one familiar per witch, so if youβre getting that strong of a pull towards her, then she likely doesnβt have a bond with another. iβm sure if you explained the situation she might understand and you guys can work on it together and form that bond,β shadow said.Β βwhat happened to your ex was a horrifying, disgusting example of how bad some witches can be. that doesnβt happen very often. i suppose itβs hard to think about the positive when something so terrible was experienced, though.β

βI donβt think Iβve ever met a telepathic witch before. I always just thought that was a psychic thing. That sounds pretty annoying, though.β he chuckled a little, taking another drink,Β βI always wonder what came first the witch or the familiar. Probably not the most important thing to know, cause that doesnβt actually matter, but itβs interesting to think about.β
βwell, psychics and witches are very similar. psychics have heightened senses - but no magical abilities. itβs all senses for them, but itβs still pretty powerful. witches have the magical aspect - and then there are the psychic witches, who have the abilities of both. i can technically be considered a psychic witch because i have the abilities psychics have, but i donβt call myself one,β shadow explained. she took a sip of her drink, brows furrowing as she thought about his statement.Β β...thatβs a good question, though. which of us did come first? when you think about it, you try to use common sense, but itβs not really that easy. itβs like the chicken or the egg debate. sure, chickens come from eggs. but eggs canβt happen without chickens to lay on them and help them develop. but with witches and familiars itβs different. technically we both can go our entire lives without each other, but we work better together. the question is, which of us is the reason the other happens? is it witches because familiars need a bond or is it familiars because youβre like our magical soulmates and weβre better balanced with you? maybe weβll never know the true answer, but itβs interesting to think about.β

βAh the mysterious power of twins. There were twins in my class when I was a kid. They always seemed to know what the other was about to say.Β βThatβs what my halmeoni always says.β
βthe twin thing is definitely powerful. especially with witches. we have literal twin telepathy. sometimes she gets in my head when iβm trying to sleep and the worst part is, iβve never known how to turn it off so iβm stuck listening to her ramble. sometimes i donβt think she even realizes sheβs doing it,β she said with a small laugh.Β βweβre both important for each othersβ balance. without balance, witches and familiars wouldnβt be able to reach their true potential or strongest points.β

βthe big ones when theyβre just being marshmallows arenβt that great, I can agreeβ he noddedΒ βbut the mini ones are pretty good. You can just popΒ βem in your mouth. You should watch it. Theyβre all different, so itβs not like one of those shows you have to watch every episode of to know whatβs going on.β
βraw marshmallows are nasty. both sizes taste the same, theyβre an evil invention,β shadow said with a scrunched nose.Β βwell then letβs get this show on the road, maybe iβll get some ideas.β
Β Β mytarnishedsilverβ:
Avery frowned faintly.Β βMy ex β¦ his witch took him away, worked him to the bone. I never saw him until he showed up here a few months ago. I honestly didnβt know if he was alive or dead. I couldnβt imagine that was a normal thing for witches to do to their familiars, but I have no frame of reference β¦ my witch doesnβt know I exist yet.β
βthatβs terrible. no good natured or good hearted witch would do that. familiars balance us out - we balance each other out. weβre important for each othersβ well being and survival. familiars are for helping us and us helping them - itβs never a one-way street. we respect each other and love each other. witches and familiars are like... soulmates, kind of,β shadow said.Β βoh? do you know who your witch is?β

βyou could have always told him you were just going as moral support for your sister. Iβm not married, though, so take my hypothetical suggestions with a grain of salt.β He took another sip, βI am. Weβve only been together since the fall, so not very long compared to many others.β
βto be honest, i wouldnβt have even come if i knew what this was. my sister has her ways of convincing me to do things. manipulation at its finest - itβs also a twin thing,β she said.Β βnot long, but youβre important for each othersβ balance.β

βWait, so you donβt like marshmallows at all?Β Not even sβmores?β Colton couldnβt think of anyone that didnβt like sβmores.Β βI donβt think so. Itβs a good show, if it was a bad one I think itβd be insulting.β
βif the marshmallow is completely melted then itβs fine. marshmallow fluff is okay. and the little marshmallows in cereal is fine, but just regular marshmallows is gross. itβs a texture thing,β she said.Β βiβll have to take your word for it cause i donβt know anything about it.β

βI would if I knew more people with kidsβ Ezra gave a little shrug.Β βThereβs lots of people out there with kids that do things that could get them killed. Maybe they need a reminder not to go dying on their kids. Itβs not something Iβm trying to have a conversation about, so canβt be a shitty conversation starter.β
βyeah, lots of people, but most of us donβt. you canβt just go around assuming every parent is doing something that would get us killed and leave our kids parentless,β shadow said with furrowed brows.Β βbut you said it - and it started a new conversation. you literally told me not to die on my kid, if you didnβt wanna talk about it, you wouldnβt have said it.β

He was in the middle of a sip of his margarita when she asked what had brought him there. Moon-soo took a moment to pull the glass down from his lips and swallow, before proceeding with his answer.Β βThought it would be a way to meet new people. Also here as moral support for my witch.β he made a gesture with the hand holding the glass to where Sam was.Β
βitβs definitely a way to meet people,β she said.Β βi came with my sister. i had no idea what she was dragging me into - and now i understand why she told my husband that it was a secret, cause he absolutely would not have liked me coming if he knew what this was,β shadow said with a small laugh.Β βyou saidΒ βyourβ witch. you must be a familiar?β
Β Β orchestralcollageβ:

βChocolate chunk it isβ he tips the pint forward a little in a quick little move. βI have disagree on the marshmallows thing, thoughβ he added as he opened the freezer up to put the other pint back. βItβs a show from the 50s or maybe 60s. You know, doo da doo da doo da doo daβ he did his best to mimic the infamous sound from the opening credits of the show.
βyou can disagree - but youβre wrong,β she joked. βmarshmallows are gross already, i donβt want it in my ice cream,β shadow said.Β βis that what thatβs from? my husband does that every time i say something he thinks is weird. should i be insulted?β

βyou could always ask if something like that is set up. Though I donβt know if this is the kind of place to have its own taxi service.β Moon-soo nodded as she told him the kind of drink she wanted βA sangria it is thenβ he nodded and went to go grab their drinks. Returning shortly with a sangria in one hand and margarita in the other. βyour sangriaβ he held the drink out to her.
βprobably not. i donβt see too many people getting too wild at something like this - but i guess thereβs always the exception,β she said. shadow gave him a small smile as she took the drink from him.Β βmerci,β she said.Β βwhat borught you here? did you come on your own or are you an innocent attendee that was just kinda... thrust into it?β
Β Β orchestralcollageβ:
βIβd say most babies donβt understand the concept of death, so how was I supposed to know she would?β He questioned. βBecause bad things can happen to a kid when that happens, and that wouldnβt be fair to herβ
βmaybe use your common sense and donβt suggest to people that they donβt die,β shadow said.Β βdo you go around telling people not to die on their kids? cause if you do, itβs a shitty conversation starter.β

βRocky road or chocolate chunk?β Colton asked as he took the two pints out of the freezer at the back of Magnoliaβs and turned to show the options to Shadow.Β βItβs for a night of marathoning The Twilight Zone if that helps any.β
@shadowduboisβΒ
βchocolate chunk, cause marshmallows donβt belong in ice cream,β shadow said.Β βtwilight zone, huh? is that the one with the big green glowing stuff coming out of the ground? or... is that tommyknockers? i never can keep those sci-fi things in order.β
Β Β mytarnishedsilverβ:
βOh. I guess that makes sense. That different families would be different,β Avery said, feeling a bit foolish.Β βLike I said, I donβt really know much about witch magic.β She shook her head.Β βIs β¦ is it common for witches to take their familiars and travel with them? Like, just up and take them from their families and work them until theyβre drained?β
βthereβs a generalized age for most witchlings in training, kind of like puberty - usually starts around the beginning of teenhood, but some start years before that. witchlings start usually after toddlerhood, but some start earlier, and some are even born with their powers - before that even, sometimes upon conception,β she said. shadowβs brows raised and she shook her head.Β βno. we donβt take our familiars from their families. familiars are like our guardians. we have them as long as we need them, but we never just uproot them and take them with us. even from far away, our familiars can keep us safe by communication. our jobs as witches and familiars coincide with each other - we keep each other safe and donβt do anything to potentially cause harm. the only time a familiar would travel with their charges is if they needed to and if it was safe for them.β
