I hate when people dumb down Henry’s monologue in 4x07 to just the Mind Flayer’s speech. “The MF had such a great speech!” Like no?? It’s not canon that the MF was speaking through him directly in that moment. That’s mostly an interpretation. People can interpret it that way if they want, while both makes sense, but I feel like saying that just feels like you’re calling Henry himself evil for feeling that way when his speech is clearly a trauma response to how he perceives life. Sure, it’s twisted, but in his monologue, he vents about his childhood, how he was scared and didn’t fit in and the evils of the world and how he wants to be free and have a connection with Eleven? I doubt the Mind Flayer would care about that lmao.
Henry isn’t a bad guy for what he said in his speech. It’s just his worldviews (worldviews formed as a trauma response). Yes, they’re going to be twisted and alienated because that’s how trauma alters your mind! Especially if you’ve been isolated for years and dehumanized in a laboratory and hurt by humans for most of your life and were forced to kill when you were only a little boy.
Mind you, this isn’t me saying you can’t interpret Henry Creel in your own way, but reducing every aspect of a deeply traumatized character to only the Mind Flayer is irking when his character is so much more than that! I enjoy Henry as a killer because I like the concept of him lashing out on the world, not him being fully-possessed/a puppet w/o a conscious while killing (if that makes sense?) He isn’t even purely evil for the way he feels! So it’s also not bad to like him for being a villain. Usually, the people who like Henry as a villain like him as a villain for the way he perceives life and his personal motives. We don’t like him as a villain to victim-blame him or because we think he’s deserving of suffering. I personally love Henry Creel as a complex, misanthropic villain who does or doesn’t get redeemed (I like both). I love redeemed Henry AU’s because of course he’s deserving of it, but I also do not mind the canon route of a non-redemption arc as it makes sense because he was flayed for so long. When you notice the world is broken, you can’t really unsee that.
Anywho, my point being is that I like Henry as both a villain/killer who hates the world (because he has a point), but I also like him as a redeemed individual who isn’t at fault and is a victim. In a way, he’s both of those things. (It’s why he’s complex/tragic)
Sorry, I just really love Henry as his own person. I view him and the MF as separate entities with different motives. (I view their dynamic similar to how Dustin says “Vecna is the five-star general.”) But I also view the relationship between MF and Henry as him clearly being supernaturally groomed and conditioned while ALSO having his own agency.
— I’D ALSO LIKE TO NOTE I AM NOT TRYING TO COME OFF AS DISRESPECTFUL FOR THOSE WHO DO PERCEIVE HENRY DIFFERENTLY THAN HOW I DO!! I just share my takes on here. No one has to agree!! 😭🫶🏻 (much love Henry fans!!)
