Fine (AO3) (not x reader, just an idea I had)

He doesn't exactly stare at people but... he stares at people. He's pretty subtle about it. It's more analyzing than anything.

This is especially true when Eye is fighting. He's there, watching for any moment that Eye might need help. If he ever does, Vista is ready and knows the right time to jump in and save Vista.

He has a habit of scratching things. People, furniture, armor, items- just about anything he finds at the moment. He doesn't feel a shred of guilt afterwards either, even if gets him in trouble.

Similarly to Eye, he fold pretty quickly. But the difference is that he folds when Eye starts being mean, but in an affectionate way

He makes biscuits too. Usually on Eye or something that has to do with Eye.

"Vista." Eye called out, tone clearly annoyed.

Vista only hummed in acknowledgement, glancing over to see what had Eye so fed up- oh.

Eye held up one of his shirts, which had become a favorite of Vistas for the singular reason of making biscuits into it.

The only real issue here was that Vista had gone a little overboard and had cut and pulled loose a lot of the stitching holding the shirt together.

"In my defense, I was locked in on that and I missed you." Vista held up his hands, looking only slightly guilty.

Eye didn't budge, still looking very annoyed.

"Aw come onnn, it's fineee- I get you a new one."

"This is the fifth time you've had to replace one of my clothes because you destroyed it."

Vista moved suddenly, leaning forward and grabbing Eye by the wrist to pull him down on the couch with him.

From there, Vista simply curled up around Eye.

"Come onnn... I'm sorry okay? Forgive me?" Vista smiled softly, a soft and barely audible purr beginning to fester within Vista.

Eye, of course, got flustered and mumbled out a "Yeah yeah." before giving in and beginning to put a hand on Vista soft ears.

He purrs a lot. Mostly when around Eye and when he's cuddling him. Off guard. Vulnerable. Eye thinks it's the most adorable thing in the world.

Vista says "Nya" randomly just to be annoying. Eye made fun of him once and Vista has never let it go.

Vista will make random cat sounds. They're sort of involuntary, but sometimes he does them on purpose.

The main ones that happens involuntarily is a startled meow or hissing. But both of those don't happen very often.

The main one he does on purpose is purring. It's like a way of showing that he trusts the person enough to be vulnerable and allow it to happen.

Vista gets this smug grin every now and then, and it shows off the little fangs he has.

Vista's tail sometimes curls around Eye. And by sometimes I mean a lot.

Vista gets the instinct to knock things over. Sometimes he listens to his instincts, sometimes he doesn't. But when he does, he sighs and realizes that he has to pick it back up and clean whatever mess it made.

Eye mainly eats meat due to his instincts, so Vista has to shove veggies and fruits down his throat so that he still had a relatively balanced diet.

Eye is clicker trained. To do what exactly? Only Vista and Eye knows.

Eye has been conditioned to blow a kiss whenever he hears Vista saying bye as he heads out the door. One time he accidentally did that to someone else who just came to ask Vista a question about a trade deal...neither of them brought it up ever. That moment doesn't exist in their minds.

If Eye is being particularly annoying, Vista will initiate a makeout session, and get up and leave midway.

Another thing Vista does occasionally (very rarely) is tell Eye to beg for something he wants. A snack, kisses, cuddles, whatever.

"That's not how we ask, is it, puppy?" Vista smiled, tilting his head in a teasing manner.

All Eye wanted was a few headpats. Sure he was being maybe a little annoying about it, but still...

"...no..." Eye reluctantly looked down and slowly got on his knees, and looked up at Vista.

His pupils were dilated as hell, he was sure.

"Please? I'm sorry for being annoying earlier?" Eye inched closer to Vista, lightly pawing on Vista's pants. "Please, just a little bit of your affection?"

Vista's smile widened, a slight blush forming on his cheeks.

"Good boy." A hand was placed on Eye's head as his tail rapidly thumped against the floor.

Sometimes when Vista notices Eye has been slouched over for a while and has that shrimp posture, he'll tell him, "Time for a big puppy stretch." which works everytime on Eye

Vista will occasionally catch Eye talking down about himself, and has found out that replacing 'Eye' with 'puppy/pup' makes him pay attention a whole lot more.

"I just feel so weak and feel like I could've done better. But I'm not... I'm not strong enough-" Vista cut off Eye immediately.

"Watch your language, puppy."

Eye stiffened.

"You are more than enough. And if you aren't, then I will always be here to protect you as well. Protection don't fall on just one of us. It's the both of us, puppy." Vista, with incredible gentleness, held Eye by the sides and pulled him closer.

Eye had never felt more loved in his life.

Eye was hurt. Really hurt. He literally passed out from the pain.

Vista, admittedly, hasn’t known Eye for very long. But it’s been long enough for him to know a few things.

For one, Eye was incredibly skilled at fighting. One of the best Vista’s ever seen. In addition to that, secondly, he doesn't handle being seen as weak or showing some form of weakness well. His pride in himself as a person comes from his strength, which was admirable really.

And finally, even though he may not show it, he really does care.

Vista knew it the moment Eye had saved his life. The odd stare that Eye had given him when Vista had mumbled out a thanks. Like he hadn’t expected the praise. Like it was just an average Tuesday for him. Like the expectation placed on him was to go above an beyond for someone like him.

It was endearing.

It was infuriating.

Because now, Eye was laid upon a bed glaring at anyone that came too close and just wanted to help, fighting back and struggling completely unnecessarily.

He wouldn't accept the potions offered. He, with what little strength he had, fought back against any physician wanting to inspect his body for internal or external damage that could be fixed.

Stubborn.

The only one who he vaguely allowed to get close enough was Vista.

There weren't many more options really.

“This would go by a lot faster if you just let someone actually medically trained to do this.” Vista set down a tray of healing potions and cloths on the bedstand.

Eye’s gaze followed him, watching him closely. Still on edge. Guarded.

“I just want to get you on your feet at the very least.” Vista didn’t necessarily plead, but it was more implied.

Eye said nothing.

Vista moved to pour a potion of health on one of the cloths, soaking it in the liquid, and set it back down.

He’d have to move slowly, but still be casual about the situation. Eye didn’t appreciate being seen or treated as weaker.

Vista grabbed the edge of the covers, pulling them down to reveal Eye’s upper body.

“You said the pain was in your general chest area?” Vista asked, fingers hovering just above Eye’s shirt.

Eye, after a moment of hesitancy, nodded.

Alright. No verbal words yet, but some form of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ was progress.

Vista began to pull Eye’s shirt up to where someone’s neck would normally be. He was…white…as in, completely white. His whole body was just as pale as the pale garden’s trees. He also had a few scars along his body, but they seemed to be from a long long time ago, based on the fact they were incredibly faded and fully healed.

The thing that really caught Vista’s attention however, was the marking on his chest.

It was best described to be in the shape of a singular eye with some crazy eyeliner and heavy mascara. A few other lines were on equal sides of it, one big one running down from the center of the eye all the way to the middle of his pectorals.

“You gonna keep staring at my chest all day or…” Eye’s tired voice snapped Vista from his intense staring contest with the tattoo on Eye’s chest.

He was staring at Eye’s chest for at least a good minute.

Well….that’s not embarrassing at all.

Vista ignored both Eye’s comment and the warmth that he felt threatening to crawl up on his face and ears. He grabbed the damp cloth and gently pressed down on the center of Eye’s chest, who shivered slightly at the cold contact.

At least, Vista chose to believe it was the cold contact, and not his hand that was also on Eye’s chest for stability.

Stability. That was all.

Focus.

“Is there any spot in particular I should be placing this?” He asked, sort of just making a small gentle circular motion around Eye’s chest.

Eye shook his head. “No.” Blunt. Ever so slightly upset. Tired. Disappointed.

“This wouldn't have happened if you had just asked for help, you know.” Vista replied just as blunt, but the gentle soothing circles didn’t stop.

“You have to take care of yourself too. Recklessness and diving head first into danger doesn’t make you strong.” Vista felt Eye tense.

He continued. “Believe it or not, running a kingdom makes for a few hard life lessons. And in my humble opinion, strength comes from being able to rely on others.”

Eye left out a small scoff, shuffling slightly. It seems that the potion really is soothing his pain.

Vista frowned in response. “It’s true, Eye. I’m not strong by myself- but I can be stronger by relying on my guards to have my back. I don’t always know what is the correct decision, that’s why I have advisors with other information to help me. I can’t heal every wound possible, that’s why I sent several of the best alchemists I know to brew these potions for you and nurses to check in on you.”

Vista stopped and stood up, grabbing a regeneration potion now.

“Can you sit up?” he asked.

Eye nodded, but struggled to do a curl up like he wanted.

Vista moved to support his back and shoulders. He could’ve sworn he felt a light shiver from Eye, but Vista chose to blame it on his weakened state and the struggling of muscles.

Once Eye was sat up, Vista paused for a moment.

He could theoretically just…hand Eye the potion and let him drink it himself. But then again, how was he going to prove to Eye he could handle this sort of stuff in the future?

A future?

A future, one with Eye in it.

Hmm, what a pleasant thought.

Either way, better to get it over with now.

“Eye, this might seem sorta weird but uh… how exactly do you eat or drink?” Vista swished the regeneration bottle for emphasis.

Eye stared at the blond for a moment before- holy shit his eye isn’t an eye anymore what the fuck-

Vista watched in slight horror as Eye’s head and singular eyeball went completely white and split open from the center. A mouth split open, incisors and a freakishly long tongue stuck out, drool already sliding down said freakishly long tongue.

Oh, cool, yeah- no that’s perfectly normal.

“Ah, okay. I see.” Was all Vista muttered, before slowly unscrewing and popping the cork on the potion. He led the potion over to Eye’s mouth, close to his tongue, and began to pour it into his mouth.

Well, at least it couldn’t get any weirder.

Vista was immediately proven wrong by the universe when Eye’s tongue darted in the general direction of the steady stream and began to curl around both the bottle and Vista’s hand.

It was warm. Incredibly slimy.

‘Gross’ was what his mind wanted to say.

Yet for some odd reason, Vista couldn't bring himself to fully believe that word.

Vista only continued to keep a steady stream of the regen pot flowing into Eye’s mouth, the tongue curled around his fingers squirmed in place but held steady up until the last drop was consumed.

Vista stood there in awe as his tongue returned to his mouth and- just like that, his giant eyeball head was back.

‘Incredible’ was the first word that came to mind.

Vista couldn’t find himself in a world where he didn’t whole heartily believe that word.

“Are you sick too now?” Eye asked, shuffling back to lay down, a small grunt barely being audible.

Vista let out a small hum as he put down the now empty bottle wiping his hand on one of the clean cloths.

“You’re red.” Plain and simple. Like it was a fact. The grass was green, the world had a giant rift in the sky, Eye was paler than the wood found in the pale garden- all simple and plain facts.

Vista stilled anyway, realizing that, yes, his face was incredibly warm.

Well, that was new.

“And you’re still in pain.” Vista grabbed the still damp cloth soaked in a health pot, and resumed his previous position of lifting Eye’s shirt and making small circles on his chest.

And a hand on his chest again. For support.

“You wouldn’t be in so much pain if you had just let me help.” Vista began again.

“You wouldn't have to bear this pain alone.” He spoke again, this time much gentler in tone, almost like a hushed whisper. “I really am here to help you. Please just…” Vista put down the cloth. “...don’t be afraid to ask. Anything you want. Really, I mean it, Eye.”

Vista sat there, looking expectantly at Eye for a moment.

Then he spoke.

“C-could you…” Eye began, turning his gaze away from Vista and shoving his head further into the pillows.

He was embarrassed.

Vista listened intently. This might be the one and only time Eye felt safe enough to trust Vista with a personal request.

“...could you stop caressing my chest? It feels weird.”

Huh?

Vista hadn't noticed his hand, which was still on Eye’s bare chest, had unintentionally started rubbing his thumb along the underside of Eye’s left pectoral.

Oh.

He jerked his hand away, as if Eye’s skin was hotter than lava and had terribly burned him.

Well…that was embarrassing.

Vista stood up suddenly, hurriedly grabbing the try of now used cloths and empty potions, feeling his ears begin to burn in humiliation.

“Okay well I’ll let you rest now- don’t take too long though because we still need to figure this out- but don’t push yourself either.” Vista’s words came out in a rush as he speed walked to the door.

He’s had enough humiliation for one day.

Eye sat there in the room, a strange silence filling the void that Vista’s voice had left behind. It was strange really. Eye had been alone for so long. He was more or less used to the silence now. All he had were the thoughts in his head to keep him company.

And right now, his mind was going absolutely bonkers.

Thoughts swirled in his head, ones about how adorable stupid Vista looked with his face all flushed, others about how his heart still felt odd, and the underlying message Vista was clearly trying to convey through his odd quips and scoldings.

Vista wanted Eye to stay here. With him.

He wanted Eye to trust him. He wanted Eye to be vulnerable around him.

How disgusting.

It made his heart churn just thinking about it.

Waking up every morning and seeing Vista at the same table he had crash landed on, waiting for him to eat breakfast.

Walking around the Village and outer skirts of the kingdom with Vista, talking about something more mundane or making small talk with some of the other villagers.

Eye teaching Vista how to block the bind spots and not leave as many openings- things that Eye noticed Vista did while fighting- and getting stronger. Together.

Walking around in a small flower field and dumping poppies in Vista’s hair.

Exploring the spot that apparently made the stars look absolutely breathtaking.

Falling asleep in the same bed during cold winters for warmth, or maybe even in front of a nice fire.

Stop.

Eye paused the rabbit hole his mind was wandering in, gently shaking the thoughts away.

Stupid. This was stupid.

He shouldn’t fantasise about dumb things like that.

Not when he already has a goal in mind.

Getting the hell out of that place.

Feelings are a weakness. They only make you doubt yourself, your capabilities, and make you hesitate.

Hesitation gets you killed.

Misplaced sentimentality gets you killed.

Every sort of attachment to things and people get you killed.

Eye had to be strong, he was strong. He didn’t need all this catering.

This sort of thinking shouldn't have even happened in the first place- no, Eye has made up his mind.

As soon as that spell is broken, he’s leaving.

He could still feel the warmth that lingered in his chest, left over by Vista's soft hand.

As soon as that spell is broken, he’s leaving.

He still remembered clearly how Vista's stare wasn't full of anger or disappointment, but genuine concern and worry.

As soon as that spell is broken, he’s leaving.

He could still hear the sincerity in Vista's voice as he scolded him, and how different it felt from when Taiga would scold him.

As soon as that spell is broken,

Eye was leaving.

Eye was going to leave.

Eye was going to leave Vista.

He had to be strong.
