It’s started happening. Again, after all these years of being alive thinking this Chapter was closed and done with, and there she is…again. Standing there with that face, a face void of any happiness.

I can’t go back down this way, I was sure I’d managed to seal this and never be back to find it; seeing that it’s only been busted wide open leads me to think this could be it. This is where I find how strong I am. 

I’m terrified that she — no … it, is the one that is ultimately stronger…

His legs hung over the side of a small bed as for the first time in ages those irrational dreams came screaming back to replace his more pleasant dreams. Hands on knees and his face buried in his hands, Shadow was soaked in a cold sweat, almost trembling for reasons he wasn’t even sure of himself.

Maria was a memory that he’d come to terms with and moved on from. Everyone knew he mourned her and even he claimed to finally moved on; but these dreams were like some kind of hellish monster scratching under his bed. He couldn’t ever manage to just…escape it.

His puffy reddened eyes looked to his alarm clock, a groan following indicated he was only going to get thirty minutes to get ready for work.

Maybe he could call in and make use of those Vacation days that Commander always insists he use for once…

After being on hold for Commander for a good twenty minutes he finally got something going his way: his wish for a day off. 

The second he got permission he wasted no time in hanging up the phone and curling up in bed with the covers pulled nearly over his head to shield light from the rising sun.
