Been chewing a lot on Bubble's relationship with Caine honestly cause ugh. I mean he's an entity outside of Caine who knows the contents of his mind and shares his tongue (waow, shared assets?), that is so fascinating!! There's an underrated, understated tragedy to Bubble, I think. Like, maybe this will age badly. But if you guys want to talk about Caine as a complex character then do the same for Bubble.
Things i think Bubble is not:
The Blue AI (that is Caine, as I said before in another post. I feel most certain about this one)
A virus (he's been there for a very long time, possibly before the circus, and I doubt he'd be such a core integration if he was a virus)
Things I feel are still not entirely certain:
Did Caine create Bubble or was it the programmers? (Either answer is interesting to me but important in outlining the shape of their relationship)
How much of Caine's code does he have access to? How high are his permissions?
They're weird and interesting and honestly I think Caine's relationship with his right hand man is undermined by theories about Bubble being the true mastermind and all that. It flattens both of them.
An interesting point of contrast that strikes me: hunger is not a need for humans in the digital world, but the discussion of eating habits is kinda important since 8 has made it even more thematically relevant.
Bubble is referred to by the code and by Caine in the pilot as "chef" which implies a level of curation and care in preparation. The contrast between that and Caine's cannibalism being an act of animalistic instinct to keep surviving and serving his purpose just. It's difficult to sufficiently describe why that contrast fascinates me besides also pointing out the fact that Caine tries to look more "proper" by juxtaposition against Bubble's raunchy wild antics.
It's sort of this scapegoating situation like Jekyll and Hyde (hi yes I'm bringing this back from like ages ago), but at the same time, they are separate entities. I'm sure they'd have a hard time seeing themselves as entirely separate when at least one of them can see into the other's mind and they share a tongue.
But at the same time, the way Bubble talks in 8 about Caine being the "lesser of the two", it makes me wonder how long he's been around. Does he predate the circus, or was he made along with it? Did Caine tell him about all this, was it read from his core, or was it something he was there to witness? I'm wondering if we'll ever get answers but until then. It's interesting to wonder.
Also, I dunno guys. I just really don't think Bubble lashing out at Caine like that in 8 and "delete this motherfucker" means he was secretly planning his downfall this whole time. If you're going to look at Caine's actions in 8 and still not call him a villain, I fail to understand why you can't see the same for Bubble.
Bubble someone Caine ostensibly has authority over who he victimizes (like he does with most people in his life though it seems a lot in this fanbase are afraid to outright say it). He leaves Bubble as unsupported as he himself. If you all like to point out the cruelty of the humans leaving Caine behind, could you think for a moment how Bubble feels about Caine potentially leaving him behind for people who don't want to be with him because he screwed them over?
Killing Caine seems to be Bubble's only means of leaving him. They're joined in body and mind and Bubble is the one taking a good deal of the mental load in their relationship. Caine isn't the only one whose suicidal ideation is revealed by "you should die" in that light, imo.

according to the terminal in ep 8, it seems that they were made the exact date (along with wacky watch for whatever weird reason of its significance, wait, maybe that's why it's all oct 15)

Oooh that is really good to know! So probably on the same day as the circus, or maybe the circus data begins with Scratch? I'm not sure I'd say for sure that I know what it means that Bubble, Caine, the Wacky Watch, and the paraphernalia engine predate Scratch's file. I doubt that's when the circus begins since none of the other dev team's files show up here but it's hard to draw any conclusions from this. Maybe it'll be answered by the finale, idk. Very interesting though!
As for the last 2 paragraphs, I will say that I can see Bubble not minding at first. Being their proverbial Mr. Hyde probably also granted him a lot of freedom to do things other characters wouldn't get away with. I also don't think he had to mind the victimization to be deeply unhappy with their situation. They've been doing this song and dance how long without a break?
I didn't notice at first when I made this post, but in the earlier episodes he and Caine are literally close enough as of the pilot to go on a lunch date together while everyone else is on the in- house adventure. But by episode 6 and 7 Caine is obsessing with the humans and their world even harder and spending less time with him. Then in 8, they're spending more time together again but it doesn't seem like very quality time, if you get my meaning. If he's falling to the wayside in favor of humans who neither of them feel understood by, it makes sense to me that he might also start feeling unwanted too.
ooo yes absolutely get the gradual neglect of bubble as the episodes go on, but I disagree on the degree to leaving Caine and suicide of the last paragraph. It could happen I think, but I think canon does a poor job of showing it if it's true. The switch up of bubble between ep 7 and 8 is something...
Although, while typing this, maybe ep 8 was bubble finally lashing out when Caine STILL asks about the humans.q
Hmmm, does bubble regret? Is ep 8 the first time he let out frustration? And that's why it was so pointed? He reverts back to typical bubble behavior after the crash out what's with that anyways? Did he smile back and go "yes, Caine finally understands"
Hmm, very true about the canon doing a poor job if that is the case. It doesn't have to be wanting to leave him as much as not even having the option to, imo. If his only meaningful lifelong relationship seemed lost and their life purposes seemed meaningless, on top of Caine's own suicidal ideation it's just hard for me to see why Bubble wouldn't start feeling at least a little suicidal.
In 8 it's weird cause he both is and isn't right back to his antics? He feels more strained in 8 as if the bits aren't really landing for him either. Sure he's having a boiby but he's not having fun, no one enjoys this. To me, the weirdest thing is that Caine is the one acting like nothing happened between them. Which I know doesn't sound weird at first cause that's what he does all the time but. Maybe he's trying not to think about it. Maybe he doesn't blame Bubble? Either way the weird thing is that despite Bubble totally breaking down his ego, Caine doesn't seem to stay mad at him for it. Everything about their dynamic in 8 is weird

I get this with caine but, What's Bubble's purpose anyways? Be a right hand man? But driving Caine to crash out doesn't even change his purpose as a sidekick. He still accompanies and play on bits with Caine's tortures.
(No idea why his name is bubble chef, did his purpose change over time? From a cook to a sidekick?)
is the lashing out a attempt to drive the suicide? I doubt bubble thought ahead if that fails, which it did. Is that why both of them have a mutual agreement to act like the suicide mission didn't happen?
Or just knocking some sense to Caine? Which it succeeded. And then act like the crash out didn't happen cus they are now on the same page.

As of that last part, maybe it's just a me thing that I'm interpreting from the performance tbh? If I'm in the minority it's probably a me thing.
Not sure why he's call chef but it's interesting food for thought. Whatever Bubble's purpose is it's innately tied to Caine, and if Caine isn't able to do his job, then what position does that put Bubble in? Part of the reason I'm so certain it's both of them being sucidal is that, well. Relationship breakdowns (possibly even a breakup), job insecurity, ongoing mistreatment, they're all factors that could turn one's thoughts that way on their own. Bubble has multiple risk factors.
Do I think he went into 8 planning a murder suicide? No. I think he just saw the first out he's ever had when Kinger was prying in the code and took it. It's not an actual out, mind you. But Bubble's head is not in a good place bc Caine is not and their minds are one but also not.
