jongin has always been a demon in human skin, so for him to dress up like a goblin king on such a prominent night as this, to take that mantel and don it like a crown ought to be telling at best, a warning at worst. heâd debated with himself about whether going as a demon might be too on the nose for someone as chaotic as he was known for being, but in the end decided to amp up the playful aspect as much as possible, just in case he needs an easy out. besides, as soon as he enters the event, he thinks he spots someone else dressed as the devil, so itâs a fair game, all things considered.
he loses yoori immediately upon arrival, the girl as eager as ever to be away from him (which he canât blame her for, having spent all summer trapped less than thirty feet away from him), and heâs already making plans in his mind to ramp up the stream of disorder as soon as possible, but first... he must be sober when he deals with ahri. he finds her rushing about the room, the dahlia event staked on reputation and glamour, as these things usually always are, and he can tell sheâs stressed about it, her movements jerky and quick. good. he wants her stretched, he wants her frayed and off-center-- he wants the truth from her.
he follows her discreetly as she wanders through the back rooms, the kitchens, the hallways, eventually finding an opportune moment to corner her in storage. getting her alone is key in forcing her to drop whatever nice act she always puts on. âahri,â he greets, as though heâs happy to see her, flashing his teeth in what might be a grin, might be a threat. âiâve been looking for you.â he shuts the door behind him, leaning back against it as he watches her. ânice outfit, you really blend in with the wallpaper.â

My Fair Lady had so many iconic songs that Yoori had seared into her memories forever, but in the moment where her feet throbbed and hairline collected sweat she felt acutely that she could have danced all night. Even after at least a dozen dances with different partners and friends she still felt her heart thrum for more, to glide across the ballroom once more. How she had missed out on so much by never learning this style of dancing until recently, how graceful and beautiful it was. How light she felt as she spun around in the arms of someone guiding her, even when it was clumsy or inexperienced as some of these men were. It didnât matter to her, she loved the feeling all the same. She wondered would they dance this way at her wedding, Jonginâs arm at her waist and his hand in hers. A position they were accustomed enough to by now, but in this context it felt different.Â
Just the thought of dancing with Jongin now made her dizzy as she hadnât been all night. Excusing herself from her current partner, she ambled her way over to the balcony where the cool night air greeted her as the curtains brushed her face as she threw open the doors and breathed out. How long had she been holding that breath for? Since she began dancing? Or just the moment that her fiance had crossed her mind. Well it was the only way she had seen him the entire evening, as the couple decided to go separately unlike the assumption. Spending an entire summer gave them enough together time to last a lifetime, and yet they would spend theirs together anyway.Though she would be shocked if both lived their life expectancy while in matrimony, half expected them to kill one another as soon as the vows conclude.Â
Maybe Jongin was drinking as he always did at these sort of events, maybe hooked up with a masked woman already. She swallows hard, and leans against the railing as she hears someone walking in and slowly turning around, the moon behind her as a light to identify the stranger striding in. In the dark, her eyes adjust and land on a tall handsome fellow with goblin like accessories adorning his attire. At least he followed the theme well, she was sure that Jongin probably wore the same boring black tuxedo he always does. It probably gets all the ladies. God, why did every man make her think of that asshole? He definitely wasnât returning the favor, she probably wasnât even a passing thought when his weighted gaze landed on other women. After a moment in her own head, she realizes her manners and bows slowly before moving over just a bit to make room for him. âGood evening.â
the point of a mask is to be unrecognizable, and some people at this party are really trying their best with it, jongin himself included. heâs only managed to fool a few of his friends into believing heâs not kim jongin, although the amount of alcohol in his grasp has been something of a tell. sehun knew right away who he was simply by noticing the way he grins, which is annoying and endearing at the same time, but at least it hasnât cut into the amount of fun jongin is having playing the part of a trickster goblin, spiking everything on the food and drink tables with some stuff harder than alcohol and locking two people in side closets without them seeing him.
he hasnât had time to dance though, which is a shame, but something about the way the room already spins without the need for excessive movement tells him heâd only make a mess of himself if he tried it anyway. the gowns and outfits swirl about the room like tuffs of confetti paper, everyone laughing and talking, the music drowning out the entire world outside, and for a moment, while heâs whispering secrets into the ear of a short, pretty-mouthed girl who insists sheâll be his wife for the evening, he wonders about where yoori is. where his actual soon-to-be wife is. she has to be puffing around here somewhere, doesnât she?
itâs only a moment though, in a series of chaotic moments, until the heat of room becomes too stifling in this outfit, all fur and leather and thorns, and he spots a balcony like gravity, slipping away from his company to go towards it, to escape. they become clingy when theyâre high, grabby and aching, but they donât notice him leave until heâs already disappeared through the door, finding himself released under the wide, dark sky. someone else is already out here though, and as she turns he enters the space, murmuring a welcome to him that he takes and embellishes on. true to form, he dips low into a bow as though he really were a goblin, come to confront a princess, his voice low and unusual. âgood evening, stranger. i beg you let me join you out under the stars tonight, or else i may die of suffocation.â he chuckles and rights himself, approaching the railing and leaning his forearms against it. âitâs too hot in there,â he tells her.
yeah. it was one of those mornings. the ones where she partied a little too hard the night before and she needed cleanse her mind. it took a few minutes of blinking to place where she was, what happened. last night, she was a woman on a mission and it looked liked she succeed. âdo you smoke?â that was the first thing that she muttered, then shook her head. hmm. ânever mind but good morning.â she wasnât sure if theyâd be on same page when it came to that. then she glanced at the cat, inching up a little so she was a little more comfortable, while feeling for her phone.Â
she smirked at his comment, finally finding her phone, âwhen it comes to catâs, theyâre in charge and youâre just there to clean the litter. just the way life is.â although she was talking to him, her face was buried in her phone, finally going to the video she thought she had. ânow that my head is clearâŠi wonder.. should i start my day off being a bitch?â finally, she did look at jongin, her face curios. the whole thing had been out of anger and now she was a bit more clear headed. âsomeone youâre dating, not dating, fucking around with. whatever. she was being a bit and bragged that she had you in the bag. i sought out to prove her wrong -which i did- but now that iâm not drunk on anger. iâm second guessing myself.â for what it was worth, she was completely frank about. not an once of shame showing on her face.Â
eventually pushing dokki onto the floor, jongin shoves the palms of his hands into his eyes, rubbing at the sleep crumbs he finds there and chuckling at oliviaâs verdict about cats. sheâs not wrong; dokkaebi often reminds jongin of his own inferiority, but he doesnât respond back. âi do smoke actually,â he admits, pointing over at the small table on her side of the room. âthereâs some cigs in the second drawer down if you want some.â he certainly doesnât mind, and given his position at the school and his ingrained standing with wolfbane, he doesnât worry about any negative repercussions his neighbors may try to infringe on him for the smell. itâs the morning, what could they expect?
heâs mid-stretch when olivia begins divulging her attack plans, the strategy sheâd played up last night replaying inside his mind, the way sheâd basically thrown herself at him, the way sheâd been more than eager to seal the deal, the flash of a camera. he hadnât minded being recorded-- thereâs plenty enough evidence out there on campus of his wondering ways. the idea of him dating someone though-- thatâs a surprise. âanyone who thinks they have someone like me in the bag is just being a dumbass,â he grins. âsounds like theyâve got it coming.â he leans over her, a hand sliding over her hips and the incline of her waist as he bites and nips at the skin on her lower ribs. âwhat are you scared of?â

sheâs nearly all ready to go, checking herself one final time in the mirror, running her fingers through dark, black tresses, smiling at her own reflection. thereâs only one thing thatâs keeping her from heading out right at that moment, though, and she canât quite put her finger on it. something is just missing, but even as she continues to twist and turn her figure in the mirror, itâs impossible to place. a frown forms on her face, lower lip jutting out in an involuntary pout when her phone springs to life once more, causing her to turn away from the mirror to grab it and reply to the messages.
âââââââ  *â đšđąđš » ìëëì€ â
⧠ ⧠ ⧠â§â§â§âą hmmmmm wouldnât you like to know~?
⧠ ⧠ ⧠â§â§â§âą well, youâve been doing a good job. keep that up and you just might get a promotion
⧠ ⧠ ⧠â§â§â§âą oh, leather, huh? just the image is tantalizing~ donât worry. iâve got just the thing
with a smile, she slips her phone into a clutch, grabbing one final accessory to add to her ensemble, problem solved after seeing his texts. she has to say, a leather choker really brings everything together, and pumps up the entire vibe sheâs going for. she gives herself one final glance in the mirror before heading out to meet him. he hadnât exactly told her where he was, but when he messages her like that, she knows heâs already close by. sure enough, as soon as she exits her building, she spots him, and the smile on her face is immediate. she waves as she approaches him, eyeing him up and down before greeting him. âwell, you never disappoint, do you?â she compliments him, a flirtatious lilt in her tone that both means nothing and means everything about their unique relationship. âwe good to go?â
she doesnât have to tell him; he already likes the idea of her thinking about him constantly, even if itâs not true-- but then, jongin always enjoys the idea of people thinking about him, even if itâs to hate him. heâs secure enough in his relationship with daeun to know that whether good or bad, she wouldnât tell him of her honest thoughts, given that their friendship is based so wholeheartedly on the flatteries and teases both of them can dish out. itâs always only mostly falsehoods or mostly candor, which is what makes it so much fun. so instead of replying to her texts, he merely licks his lips and slips his phone back into his pocket, eager to see the ensemble she descends in.
and he is not disappointed. âahh, thereâs my baby girl,â he chuckles as she approaches, lifting an arm up to slide around her shoulders as he leads her towards his bike propped up on the other side of the parking lot. âof course! what sort of dream boy would i be if i let you down? i got to get that promotion, right?â he shoots her a charming, lopsided grin, full of an internal blaze, as though the coals in his irises are coming to life. âiâm going to take you out to a little place i recently found on the top floor of one of the downtown buildings. itâs gorgeous up there, and as a rule, thereâs dancing and booze. so itâs perfect.â he disengages from her as they reach the bike, him handing her a helmet, but then thinking better of it. âis this going to mess up your hair to wear?â helmets, for someone as death-defying as kim jongin, are a mood-based, occasional thing.

they donât stand a chance, thatâs true, mortal men could never stand against twin tornadoes like the two of them, against hurricanes, against the forces of chaos that are young boysâ hearts, with too much money to their names and too much power in their fists, all the world a desolate landscape to their eyes. vesper and jongin are waves, inevitably crashing, smashing themselves against rocks and cliffs, daring the earth to open up and swallow them whole it if thinks it can stomach them well enough; their own parents coughed them up from pits of hell, casting them as towers of fire, cursing them as irredeemable. jongin finds a companion in vesper like this, finds him bloody and hungry and terrible, every inch a mirrored image, and the grin that spreads across his face as vepser replies to him in the same thrilled tenor as he himself feels, is wild and uncontrollable as a storm.
but then, of course, the world manages to reassert itself, adjusting reality against their wishes. through the windows, beaming lights flicker in, red and blue and surprising, horns and car engines blare and whistle, and jongin allows himself only a moment or two to realize whatâs happening. âshit,â he curses, knowing the consequences for getting caught here, doubtless getting arrested, having that splashed all over the rag-mags tomorrow. âweâre made! weâve got to go.â he reaches out to snatch at vesperâs jacket to haul him along towards the back of the bar, flinging them both through the side exit that spills out into the alleyway. the chilly midnight air hits him in the face, the streaming florescent lights dimming more and more as he runs away from the police. somewhere behind him, an officer shouts for them to stop, but jongin only shoots back a glance, long enough to flip him the bird and turn a corner around a building. âthis way!â he tells vesper.
We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits:
Who knows upon what soil they fed
                                             Their hungry, thirsty roots?
as is customary in any house or apartment that kim jongin lives in, he tends to always wake up in the worst way imaginable, with a headache the size of jupiter spawning from whatever hellish escapades heâd engaged in the night beforeâ itâs just par for the course of his life lately, especially since the announcement of his engagement. he considers this both his acting out period as well as retribution both for himself and to his family for existing. someone has to do something irrational, someone has to do something ridiculous, someone has to always pay the price, and jongin is no stranger to understanding that it will always be himself. somewhere in the world, yoori is waking up beautifully and he hates her for it.
when jongin opens his eyes, he realizes the main reason for his immediate discomfort is his cat, the creature stepping on him unpleasantly and kneading his chest annoyingly. âwhat,â he grumbles at the feline, who only meows loudly and continues bothering him with his paws even as jongin nudges and pushes him away, attempting to make space. instead all he really does is push dokkaebi into his gorgeous, brunette bedmate, effectively waking her up as dokki hisses non-threateningly (that might sound like an oxymoron except for the fact that dokki is regularly in a bad mood but never truly acts aggressively on it). âdamn cat.â jongin winces sleepily as dokki headbutts his cheek. he glances at olivia. âiâm going to kill this cat. heâs going drive me to commit catricide.â
he doesnât remember what led to him being there. thereâs also the question of why jongin and why does he suddenly feel a sense of companionship between them. could be the alcohol talking, could be the alcohol they drank together. yeah, thatâs probably it. because connecting jongin to his reputation on campus, one that not only precedes him but is proven in some of his actions which is what chanyeol typically cares about most over rumors, and connecting him to this sense of amusement and playfulness he feels now is oddly placed.Â
it isnât like him and that could be the point of it all. who better to not be himself with than one of the so-called devils on campus? a last-minute invitation to a wedding, though it doesnât seem to be so last-minute for jongin. he swears, would be certain if he wasnât drunk, that he saw jongin with the bride before the wedding. oh, or was it a bridesmaid. he shouldâve knockeâ no, wait, he swears the door was wide open when he turned that corner but thatâs too shameless. then again, could be perfectly normal for the guy next to him now as the ceremony comes to an end. â so, uh, â he leans closer. â who do you know here again? âÂ
itâs been a difficult couple of months for kim jongin, through the summer and the reinitiation of the fall semester, challenging on multiple levels of social functionality; getting locked up with yoori, the impending marriage, his fatherâs gradual extreme antics, his architecture projects spinning, old enemies trying to become new friends-- itâs a whirlwind. jongin has been increasingly stressed and distressed, pinning his grievances down into the bottom of his gut with copious amounts of alcohol, regardless of any event he can persuade himself to attend. he doesnât particularly enjoy weddings, especially since his own engagement, but the promise of an open bar and flirtatious women are always good incentives for getting him through the door.
was he expecting a bridesmaid and even the bride herself to be just as stressed and in need of some relief as heâs been, right before the ceremony? of course not, but misery loves company, and if he can be of any help to anxious, desperate women in their time of need, well, thatâs just the sort of magnanimous bastard he is. he downs a shot of whiskey just before chanyeol leans in and asks him a question, which should be easy to answer, but instead jongin finds himself laughing too hard to explain right away. it takes him a moment to regain control of himself. âthe bride, actually,â he attests. âsheâs so beautiful, right? we were in econ class together last year.â he lowers his voice towards just chanyeol beside him, so no one else can hear. âiâd really hoped she wouldnât hate him quite so much by the time they got here, but welp.â he shrugs.
taeho has never been much of a welcoming presence, and heâs certainly not a traditionally friendly one. maybe itâs the towering height, the deep voice, the resting bitch face⊠or quite simply the fact that heâs drawn to interpersonal conflict and verbal arguments like a moth to a flame. unsurprisingly, the fact he had to get up at ass-crack of dawn to drag his own sorry ass to a pit of chlorine doesnât help. what even was this assembly for anyways? and why did it have to be this cruelly early? really the fact that these eager-to-please fetuses freshmen were swarming his headspace is the cursed cherry on top.Â
still, taeho wouldnât consider himself a bully, per say. he likes to think he only goes after those who are really asking for it. so why is he laughing unapologetically when jongin sends an unexpecting freshman tumbling into the pool? come on, you canât blame a guy for appreciating objectively good content â the way the poor kidâs lanky limbs go flying everywhere, his eyes widening in sudden shock. comedic gold. besides, what happened to all having a positive mindset? appreciate the small things in life! start your day with a laugh! laughter is the best medicine! really, where were all those optimists now?
unfortunately it seems like their coach is not an optimist. also unfortunately, taehoâs half-awaken brain canât stop himself from leaking snickers of laughter, despite his coachâs very evident disapproval. âi swear, the kidâs body got in the way of jonginâs foot,â he testifies very seriously. no positive response. âhe asked jongin if water was wet.â still no response. âjongin is helping foster a brotherhood, a camaraderie like no other. he made me laugh. and you know how hard i am to please,â he pleads. okay, the look in his coachâs eyes is growing increasingly murderous, and he knows he should probably stop⊠but he canât help himself.Â
âcoach! weââ he motions at jongin and himself. ââare the backbones of this team. you canât bench us⊠you know you love us,â he insists, capping things off with a sugary wink. he thinks itâs probably in the employment contract somewhere that coaches canât inflict corporal punishment on their athletes⊠well at least thatâs what heâs banking on now.
itâs one of those mondays that grinds into jonginâs bone and scrapes against his nerve-endings, fraying all his edges and driving him to extremes, so when the coach tells him go to sit on a bench, his initial reaction is sneering and hateful, despite taehoâs jovial responses. jongin is a creature of halves-- half snide, half charm, half in, half out, half too much, half never enough, half control, half chaos. but itâs that chaotic side of him today, on monday, that gets him and taeho in hot water, because as soon as the coach tells them to go sit down, all jongin wants to do is shove him into the pool next.
âi was teaching the brat a valuable lesson,â jongin tosses in along with all of taehoâs excuses. âthe first of many, in fact, about how swimming can be a fun sport and also a method of survival as well. shouldnât that be considered more of a noble undertaking on my part?â similar to how the older man reacts to taeho, he simply glares at jongin as well before pointing towards the benches, the muscles in his jaw flexing. jongin thinks for a moment, he could probably take him, if he wanted, if this meant enough to him, if it really angered him that much.
but instead he just sighs and turns away from the other man, rolling his eyes so hard heâs surprised they donât just fall out of his head, making his way towards the cold steel seating and slumping down on them, his fingers running through his hair, his chest burning with restrained curses. ânext time,â he tells taeho when the coach is no longer in earshot, returning his attention to the other freshmen dumbasses in this class, âiâll be more subtle. just for this shit, iâm gonna make it my mission for the next semester, to teach all these tadpoles about water survival.â kim jongin, a shark with the scent of blood on his tongue, and months and months in his future to hunt for prey. âcanât believe weâre getting punished for having a sense of humor.â

Even though Yoori is supposed to be the theatrical one, the face her fiancee pulls is nothing short of dramatic. She fights the smile threatening to pull at her cheeks from the corner of her lips and turns back to the sky as if she was also looking for Kinu. As if this was a real story. Why was she even entertaining him? At this point she could just ignore the ramblings of a drunken man and it would make no difference either way.Â
But glancing over at him, she felt no pang of annoyance or even the urge to extend her long legs and push him down this hill. Instead she hummed as she if she is listening intently. âYou would think my upbringing in the middle of nowhere has given me a more extensive knowledge of folklore.â She agrees as his arm once again obstructs her view of the night sky, Not that it matters, it gives her an excuse to glance at him for a bit longer as he begins spewing silly stories and for a moment he seems like a little kid. Making up crazy stories and asking the adults in his life to believe them. It breaks her heart a bit to think about, young Jongin not even being able to white lie because of his father. Never being able to truly be a child in his own home, growing up too soon, hardening too quickly; maybe that is why she indulges this moment under the night sky. âCaterpillars, Kino was a caterpillar.â She whispers back as if itâs true.Â
Because for a moment when sheâs watching his eyes even darker without any light to reflect back on them, yet full of such glittering moments of mischief. It was true. âSo what ever happend to Kino after he made the sky? Did he turn into a butterfly after his adventures?â
âcaterpillars, yes,â jongin acquiesces, nodding too much until heâs nauseated, and then covering his face with both hands until he can bring himself back to a safe mental space. this weekend has been so long already, and while he agreed to spend this time with her instead of anyone else less pretty, he is on the verge of hankering for another drink, just to keep the edge off. he canât allow himself to meander back towards sobriety, thatâs not the name of this game. âkino the warrior caterpillar.â he pauses a moment then, wincing. âthat doesnât have the same sort of fearsome vibe to it though, does it? caterpillars are soft, cushy creatures.â
he scratches his nails through his hair, running them through the strands messily as he stares upwards towards the dark sky, thinking about his own tall tale and how that would look, how that would play out; a great big wormy monster chewing through the black canopy, needling in and out like a tapestry. âwhat an abomination that would be,â he whispers, mostly to himself now, slurry and stumbling over words. âhow we were supposed to live in darkness before the stars came.â
but then she asks him a very poignant, logical question, which yanks him out of his half-dream and back into the world of silliness. âoh no, of course not, kino was a warrior worm!â he gives her a credulous, sideways look. âwarriors donât turn into butterflies, yoori, havenât you ever read a myth?â he reaches out and nudges her shoulder, playfully. âhe went on and had other adventures, obviously. i canât remember them all right now, because thereâs just so many, but they were all pretty impressive.â by now his eyes are drifting closed more often than not, and sticking that way for longer periods of time. âdo me a favor, yoori-ah, donât let me fall asleep out here, i donât like caterpillars.â
âmannersâ is rich coming from a boy that has none. although, she wishes nothing less than to speak up and put him in his placeâshe simply shrinks more. he has the aura of a bad boy and he plays it well. there wasnât anything she could do but stand there with her head down.
she sighed under her breath, looking at the binder trapped in her arms. this was for a grade. she has to suffer through it. she needs to be the bigger person. his attitude to her wonât change, and she knows that, so she lifts her head. â iâll be using the entire stage. â she states in her loudest voice yet. her feet still planted in their spot as her gaze went to the stage. ballet likes to occupy the mass space to showcase extravagant jumps and twirls. the more performers, the bigger the stage. however, hana could fill a large stage on her own.
the notebook in her arms was finally released from itâs hold. she opened it to check the confirmed size and shape of the platform. â big is good.. i have a lot of leaps in this performance.. iâm introducing a bit of rhythmic gymnastics to keep the audience entertained.. i know ballet isnât as regale as it once was, so i will be throwing around a ball for a small portion of my dance. the ceiling cannot be low.. â
jongin begins sketching as she speaks, taking slow, deliberate steps across the stage even though he isnât paying attention to where heâs walking. he trusts himself to understand the space around him, to fill it easily and not wander off the edge. to understand what she needs, he has to be able to feel the vibe of this place, know what it is sheâs seeing, what it is the audience wants to see. something captivating, something delicate.
ballet sets can be gaudy but heâs been to enough shows (forced on him by his mother) to know the generalized set pieces and expected lighting for most types of works. âa lot of leaps and youâre taking up the entire stage by yourself...â he murmurs, more to himself than to her, but eventually he does look up at her, as though for confirmation. âa ball and gymnastics?â he blinks, trying to digest that. âare you going to be tossing the ball around as well? dodging or dunking or something?â
âIf that were true, youâd be a single man. Instead of pretending to be one.â Apryl replies boldly, having no idea whatâs he told her in the foreign language. No doubt itâs some innuendo, meant to further tease the blonde. When it comes to Jongin, Apryl has no idea what she really feels for him. Contempt or infatuation, perhaps both, dangerously mixed in what she knows is a highly volatile cocktail. Whatever that sensation is, she fights the feeling full heartedly, refusing to accept defeat. Apryl only reacts with a raised eyebrow, challenging Jongin to do the unthinkable, which he always fails to do.
âWhat bind am I in? I still have my freedom. Unlike you.â Apryl points out with a self satifiying grin. She then rolls her eyes when hearing his insufferable sighs. Dramatic as usual. âI know I can do better. Unfortunately, the love of my life is taking his sweet time, for some reason or another. Guess Iâll have to quell this boredom I feel by hanging out with you.â Apryl declares, mimicking the sigh that he mockingly offered. Apryl adding one huff more, just to upstage him. âHopefully, heâll show his face before you say I do. Iâd hate to make your wife even more insecure than she already is.â
âi donât know what youâre talking about. single or not, i can do whatever i want,â he tells her reaching up to brush her hair back behind her ear, his eyes soft and dark, sticky and sweet, like molasses. apryl tries so hard to sound like she knows more than she actually does, even when itâs obvious sheâs just talking out of her ass, but jongin smiles at her anyway, unwilling to give up more than he has to with her. âi have plenty of freedom with plenty of people, i have more money than god, and a naturally trustworthy face.â
he grins wolfishly at her to accentuate just how untruthful the last part of his sentence was, but the rest of it... sure. âwell if youâre holding out so long for the love of your life to appear, maybe itâs because youâre trying to find him at the bottom of the barrel. you ought to grow some standards, thatâs all iâm saying.â he chuckles at her show of dramatics, rolling his eyes back at her. âthis from the girl who constantly hounds me to buy her food and take her out? poor little apryl, stuck here in the muck and grime with me. when will your knight in shining armor appear?!â he opens his arms out wide, as though one of her fairytale boys will just fall right out of the sky. âwhy would my wife be insecure about you finding a boyfriend? i canât imagine why sheâd care.â

âwhatâs it to you?â she spits back, leaning against the far wall of the room, gaze falling to her feet as she taps them against the ground. she allows silence to swallow them, but the thickness of it makes even her uncomfortable, so she fills it with her own voice, sighing as she does so. âi never told you about it. itâs not exactly something i go around telling everybody, and itâs not something that comes up in casual conversation.â at this point, asking him not to tell anyone would probably only prompt him to go around spreading it even more, so she refrains.
the way he speaks about yoori makes her skin crawl, a frown forming on her fae. sure, she and the president of the drama club arenât exactly the best of friends, but she admires and respects her, especially knowing the kinds of things she has to deal with by being engaged to him. âyou donât even realize how lucky you are,â she says, but that luck comes at a price for yoori, a disheartening price. she shakes her head, pushing herself off the wall to try and search for the door. âcanât you just bust it open or something? iâm sure you could afford to replace it. get a door that actually works, even.â
he runs his fingers through his hair, scratching the nails over his scalp to try and calm himself down, to remind himself that this isnât the worst thing thatâs ever happened to him, this isnât the most terrible price heâs ever paid for a wrong turn made. he can remember blood and screams and sharp stabs of pain for simply asking the wrong sort of questions, even as a child-- this is nothing like that. this is just a game, a playground at best, just another test of his psychosis, being pitted in here with a girl heâd rather not have to deal with again.
itâs not so much that he hates her-- sheâd never hurt him enough to warrant his fury towards her, but goddamn it, she could certainly be annoying sometimes. most of the time. now that theyâre in here together like this, and sheâs hunting for ways to make him uncomfortable about yoori and the party and his own motivations, he remembers the things about yoohyeon that he disliked, even when they were together. she was such a romantic, always wanting more than she could get, always hoping for some fairytale turn of phrase from him, as though he was a knight in armor instead of the devil in the dark. it was a constant pressure. it hadnât been new to him, to date or lead on some girl with that many stars and hearts in her eyes, but it had felt interesting that he might reciprocate it, even minutely, with her.
sheâd felt different than yoori, and that had been intoxicating for a while. which is, as its own thing, a dangerous line for him to walk.
none of that sits between them now though, as evident by the way she stubbornly refuses to answer him at first, snapping back a retort. he sighs and throws his hands up, rolling his eyes even though she canât see, before crossing his arms tightly over his chest and pressing himself back harder against the wall. he canât blame her, really, he wouldnât tell himself anything either.
he sighs again when she mentions how âluckyâ he is, just shaking his head. âoh yeah, iâm real lucky,â he replies, sarcasm dripping off every syllable. âyoori is such a catch, being with her is what iâve always dreamed of.â everyone is always so ready to side with his hellion of a fiance, as though sheâs never told him how much she hates him, as though sheâs not the one who roped them together in this binding, suffocating relationship to begin with. she chose this, but of course, heâs the villain. âyoori is always so-- will you stop?â he snaps. âdo i look like iâm made of metal? what am i suppose to break the door down with? this isnât even my house, itâs not my fault the door is locked from the outside. what am i supposed to do?â
