In Japan are giving Serena's Fokko with the item: Destiny Knot, not a big hint, but its suspicious that they chosen especially this item, in Japanese its translated as: Red String (a string beteween 2 people that are destined to be together sounds familiar right?), and recently in the anime, a blue ribbon/knot was part of an amourshipping hint, so a little more suspicious.

And there are tokens of them (Ash and Serena) for the Pokemon Tretta Lab, its the first time that 2 characters of the anime (not including pokemons) that have a reference in the japanese arcades.
