Live Projects 3: Let's Do This!

Last Thursday we were at the California Academy of Sciences for their Gallery Crawl NightLife, and we hosted a photo hunt using Alec Soth's Let's Do This! art action. The most creative photo, as judged by a team of SFMOMA staff, will win two tickets to this year's Post-Modern Party at the Modern Ball! Here are the finalists-- the grand winner will be announced next Tuesday.

Lina Tellefsen, 11 years old, has been collecting plastic caps and decided to use them for the "Where does art come from" project. 

She said that there is so much plastic floating in the ocean, polluting the waters and harming the sea life, that she wanted to use the caps to portray all the plastic in the ocean. The title of her art is "Dive In". She was inspired by Matisse's artwork, "The Swimming Pool".

Inspired by Jessica Stockholder's "Collect" art action, Carol H. of Los Altos organizes her containers into a floral formation. 

For Jessica Stockholder's "Collect" art action, Rose S. of Oakland honors the cold and flu season with a gardenia made of tissues. 

San Franciscan Stella L.’s collection of paperclips showcases the myriad sizes, shapes, styles, and colors of this often overlooked office supply. 

For Jessica Stockholder's "Collect" art action, Gina B. of San Francisco makes a mesmerizing circle using her daughter’s gem and trinket collection.

Inspired by Alec Soth's "Hunt" art action, Jennifer K.W. of Alameda created her own treasure hunt and tracked down a keyboard, a tower, and people holding hands.

Morgan M. submitted these yesterday – they respond to Chris Johanson's "Draw" art action. 

If you follow the images in a spiral from the bottom left, you see a line of thought coiling into the center. The images are all produced by a script that Morgan wrote in Python (a snippet of which is attached). The act of creation was the programming itself, which then generates the visual output. 

"I pulled the raw thesaurus information from the Roget's Thesaurus hosted by Project Gutenberg. The prompt said to think of something then think of something else, but I figured a computer could do that for me. The program picks a random word, then looks for words related to that first word, then it randomly chooses among the synonyms and uses one of them as the new starting point to repeat the process, checking each time to make sure that it hasn't looped back into a word it already used." - Morgan M.
