LTE ushered in the age of mobilization for the American worker. Almost every business has employees that use mobile devices. Whether it’s for employee communication, or for point-of-sale devices, mobile technology is more important than ever.

It is critical that any mobile 5G experience for business allows seamless transitions between Wi-Fi, LTE and 5G.

This is why we will deploy a standards-based nationwide mobile 5G network in early 2020. That network will allow for seamless handoffs between Wi-Fi, LTE and 5G, virtually anywhere a business customer may go.

So far, we’ve confirmed plans for two new 5G devices in 2019. In addition to the NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot we launched in 2018, we’re working with Samsung to offer two Samsung smartphones this year.

In the parts of the 12 cities where our standards-based mobile 5G network is live today, we’re working with businesses to create and innovate new experiences. 

As we expand the network, these businesses are helping us pave the way for the astounding impact 5G will eventually have nationwide.

Fixed Wireless

Whether it’s for primary connectivity or as a secondary connection to enable reliability, businesses look to fixed wireless solutions to help serve a wide range of needs, like setting up new locations faster.

With a fixed wireless solution, a quick service restaurant could get their point-of-sale devices working the same day they open, and keep their devices connected even if primary connectivity is ever interrupted.

AT&T Business now offers AT&T Wireless Broadband, which has data options and flexibility to help meet each business’s specific needs. In the coming weeks, we will offer multiple speed tiers up to 50Mbps. This solution builds on our leading fiber distribution. Nationwide, over 8 million business customer locations sit within 1,000 feet of our fiber, and we connect nearly 2.2 million locations with fiber today.

This current fixed wireless offering helps lay the groundwork for our customers to upgrade and take advantage of AT&T 5G when its available in their area.    

Edge Computing

Edge computing is expected to bring a sea-change in how businesses use cellular data to massively improve their operations. Edge computing allows businesses to route application-specific traffic to where they need it and where it’s most effective – whether that’s in the cloud, the edge of our network or on their premises.

AT&T Business now offers AT&T Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC). This edge computing solution uses our own software-defined network to enable faster access to data processing, and gives flexibility in how businesses manage their cellular traffic through on-premise hardware and software. With MEC they can process low-latency, high-bandwidth applications closer to where they’re used to help create new outcomes and capabilities.

This could mean new machine learning opportunities and more connected devices. Healthcare facilities could process and transfer data-intensive images between devices in the exam room, and transfer that information to the doctor in near-real time. Or manufacturers could process connected sensor data and robotic operations on a scale they couldn’t before.

Plus, the data that runs through AT&T MEC can be routed to their cloud or stay within an enterprises’ private environment to help increase security.

As we look to the future, edge computing solutions are expected to become available to serve broader metro environments, and will give things like autonomous vehicles, AR/VR and drones new life.

As a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ community, AT&T honors National Coming Out Day this Thursday by celebrating love and acceptance with concerts in select cities. We invite everyone to experience the first broadcast of the LOVELOUD Festival on DIRECTV and DIRECTV NOW. AT&T is also powering a volunteer drive with The Trevor Project.

The premiere of LOVELOUD on AT&T AUDIENCE Network is on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. PT. Filmed at Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City this summer, LOVELOUD features performances by Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Grace VanderWaal, Neon Trees’ Tyler Glenn, Vagabon and A.W.

On National Coming Out Day and every day, we champion equality through our relationship with The Trevor Project. As the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people, The Trevor Project works to save young lives by providing support through its free and confidential crisis services.  

It’s that time of year many of us decide if it’s worth trading in our old devices for the latest and greatest. For those looking to trade-in their device quickly and easily to help offset the cost of upgrading to a new one, AT&T is here to provide 5 easy steps for trading in your old device. 

Find the right trade-in program

Trade-in programs like Gazelle offer fast cash for your device, but you may get more bang for your buck when trading it in for credit with AT&T’s Trade-in Program or Apple’s GiveBack program. Both offer store credit for older Apple products, plus Samsung, BlackBerry, and Motorola mobile devices. Simply answer a few questions about the make, model, and condition of your device and receive an instant estimate for how much credit you can get. 

Back up your data  

Before switching your old device to your new one, be sure to back up your data to save any apps, contacts, and memorable photos. On Apple devices, check your iCloud settings for what content you want to save and make sure the Backup setting stays on. You can also use the AT&T Mobile Transfer app which seamlessly transfers your content from your old device to your new device wirelessly. Simply download the app to both devices, follow the prompts to connect the devices and transfer your content.

Log out and reset the old device

In order to claim your money or credit from the trade-in, you’ll have to reset the device to its original factory settings to leave no trace of personal data behind. To do this on iOS, go to the settings app and log out of your Apple ID, be sure ‘Find My iPhone’ is turned off in the iCloud settings. AT&T offers additional support for resetting all types of mobile devices here.

Take pictures of device  

It’s always a good idea to take notes and save photos of the physical status of your phone before you plan on shipping it off. Having proof may come in handy in case you run into any problems, like the small chance it gets damaged in the mail, which could lower the amount of credit you receive.

Package the device properly

After you thoroughly read the trade-in directions and ready to ship the device, be sure to package it properly to make sure it arrives in one piece by wrapping the device in bubble wrap or similar material to cushion the phone and keep it in place. Also be sure your shipment is insured and keep your tracking number to check on the shipping status.

A recent study from Pew Research Center found that 95% of teens now have a smartphone or access to one. As kids and teens head back to school, being aware of how they’re spending time on their devices can help you make sure they’re staying safe digitally and on track with their studies. Here are some tips from AT&T on how you can help your students prepare for the upcoming school year:

Start with a contract

Create a contract with rules that establish guidelines for appropriate online behavior. This could include information such as how much time they can spend online, what they can post, what sites are on and off limits, etc. Once you have a contract you and your student can agree upon, have them sign it.

Set limits

Installing an app such as AT&T Smart Limits onto your student’s device can help you to limit your student’s phone use during certain times of day or night. Parents can also set up text reminders to switch to Wi-Fi when a set amount of cellular data is used.

Create offline time

Parents can install apps such as Moment onto their student’s device to help them be aware of how much time their spending on their device. The app also has a “Moment Family” feature which allows you to set up time for your entire family to be screen-free during moments such as lunch or dinner.

 Be Cyber Aware

Remind your student to use caution when sharing information and ignore people contacting them with wild offers or promises, like free money, in exchange for their information. 

Outside Lands returns to Golden Gate Park this weekend and festival goers are sure to be snapping selfies and posting videos of their favorite moments on their devices. To help you ready your devices, AT&T has put together a list of smartphone photography tips.

Stay charged: Having a portable battery handy such as the mophie Type C Powerstation can give you peace of mind that you’ll have enough juice on your devices to get photos and videos of all your favorite sets.

Manage your storage: Avoid running out of storage space on your device by storing your photos onto an external hard drive or cloud storage platform.

Edit with ease: Take your photos up a notch by increasing the contrast or adding a filter. Apps such as VSCO or Adobe LightRoom CC are user-friendly apps that can help give your festival photos a professional touch.

And if your phone is a little older, consider updating your device to a newer model equipped with a high quality camera such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the iPhone X.

When taking your photos, be sure to also consider these tips:

Clean the lens: Getting the dirt off the lens on your phone will help you to get the clearest possible photos. Use a soft lens cloth to deep clean it without scratching it.

Set the focus: When using your device, keep your subject in the center of the frame, then tap it as needed to bring them into clearer view.

Don’t use zoom: Digital zoom typically results in a lower quality photo. Walk closer or farther to your subject to get a better shot.

Many 'Game of Thrones' fans in SF had the experience to sit on the Iron Throne, and now the AT&T west coast flagship store is hosting another installation people are buzzing about. This time, AT&T brings Westworld® fans a chance to 'escape the reality' of bustling Union Square. Whether you're a fan of Westworld®, or just curious to learn about the show, visitors at AT&T 1 Powell can embark on this self-guided tour for the ultimate retail experience. 

Here's a dose of what 'guests' can experience at 1 Powell in San Francisco, as they would at Delos Destinations:

When walking into the store, fans will immediately recognize the life-sized, Vitruvian man-inspired AI host seen in the opening credits of the show. Visitors can take a look at authentic costumes from main characters like Maeve (Thandie Newton) and Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), props such as handguns, and knives, and browse Westworld-themed accessories on sale, like t-shirts, socks, wallets, and purses. 

Guests can proceed to the personality quiz on the touch screen to determine what character from the show they resemble, then pick a black or white 'hat' in the form of an ID card. The card will give guests access to the interactive machines throughout the store, including a large digital map of Westworld like the one used by Delos staff members or the self-playing piano that plays saloon-style covers of Radiohead, Soundgarden and Rolling Stones off the Season 1 soundtrack. 

The Westworld virtual reality booth is also available, where fans can transport themselves to a world without limits, choosing their gun and hat before being transported downtown Sweetwater to load the gun and shoot down beer bottles. 

Do you want to get a jump start on spring cleaning?

Start with the one item that’s almost always with you – your smartphone. Connected devices often serve as our close companions and virtual closets. They store our emails, photos, documents and apps. From time to time, it’s good to clean up and organize your smartphone.

Check out these tips to help boost your smartphone’s performance and battery life.

Clean Your Phone: Clean your phone with a microfiber cleaning cloth. Use a wrung-out disinfectant wipe or spray a paper towel with disinfectant to clean away germs and bacteria. Don’t spray the phone.

Delete Unused Apps: Even though you may not be actively using an application, it can still be running along with other apps. This can silently drain the battery. Close or quit those unused apps. And if you no longer use the apps, delete them. This also frees up space for new apps or more photos and videos.

Organize Your Apps: Create folders by category: Travel, Weather, News, Social Media, Photography, etc. And place apps used most frequently on your home screen.

Declutter Your Inbox:  Unsubscribe from any emails you don’t open. Create a digital filing system with folders so emails are moved to the appropriate category. Consider deleting any emails over 2 weeks old.

Clean Up Your Contact List: Review your address book and toss out the contacts you no longer use to free up space.

Offload Your Photos: Smartphones make it easy to capture and record life’s moments. But, photos and videos can take up a lot of space. For those who can’t bear to delete even one photo or video consider a memory card.

Don’t know what to do with all those outdated cords, plugs and wireless phones? Donate them to AT&T Reuse & Recycle Program.

You can safeguard human health and our natural environment by recycling your e-waste. Through the AT&T Reuse & Recycle program, you can bring unwanted wireless phones, smartphones, accessories and batteries (regardless of the manufacturer or carrier) to AT&T company-owned retail stores for recycling.

If the phone still has value, AT&T provides a trade-in service. At company-owned retail stores, AT&T lets customers turn in old wireless phones and receive an AT&T promotion card or donate the value to the charity Cell Phones for Soldiers.

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games are here and we’re bringing you every minute of NBCUniversal’s coverage. Pick the right data package

Find your carrier’s international data plan options to determine which plan is right for you. If you have AT&T, consider AT&T Passport, which lets you keep in touch with family, friends or colleagues while traveling in over 200 countries with data, text and discounted calling – all in one international wireless plan.  You can also estimate your usage based on the number of days you’ll be traveling at att.com/myatt.

Manage your apps

Since some apps consume more data than others, consider monitoring the usage of apps that are rich in data such as social media, navigation, news, and games. Disabling apps, that you’re not using, from running in the background will cut down data use as well.

Avoid streaming  

Steaming content is extremely data intensive so download the streaming content before leaving the U.S. to avoid streaming movies, videos, music or other content while abroad.  

Track your usage

Not sure how much data you’ve already used? Track usage with your device’s auto-check feature under your phones “Settings”. Then reset the tracker once you reach your international destination.  

Disable email auto-check  

Switch your phone’s email settings from “Push” to “Fetch”. This allows you to manually download your email when connected to Wi-Fi.  

According to the National Retail Federation, more than 81 million people shopped online this past Cyber Monday. With online shopping and mobile payments expected to spike this holiday season, taking precautionary measures can help you to shop online knowing your personal information is safe. Here are some tips from AT&T on how you can shop safely online this holiday season:

Check it out. Look for security indicators on the website such as an “s” after the http in a website address, and a lock icon at the bottom of the screen.

Be careful connecting to Wi-Fi. Make sure it is a secured network and do not provide personal information or conduct transactions on public Wi-Fi. Requiring a password to access a public Wi-Fi does not guarantee that service is secured. Use your mobile phone network over public Wi-Fi.

Back up your phone. Storing a copy of your phone’s data on a separate device or the cloud comes in handy in the event that your phone is stolen. If lost, free wireless security apps such as Android’s Device Manager and Apple’s iCloud allow you to track your phone and erase its data remotely.

Update your software. Keep your personal devices and laptops secure by updating operating systems and applications regularly.

Use secure websites. If asked to fill out a form or share information, go directly to the company’s secure website to submit the information. Don’t fill out forms attached to emails or click on links in an unsolicited text message.

As a ‘thank you’ to our nation’s servicemen and women, AT&T is excited to partner with the Sacramento region’s Operation Tiny Home to host a free 3-Day home building workshop for veterans with “Tiny House Nation” renovation expert and host Zack Giffin.  

From November 9 – 11 in McClellan Park, veterans will learn hands-on carpentry and construction skills  and work to construct a tiny home that will be used in the Building a Better Future Program and donated to a veteran in need. Veteran supporters are invited to visit the job site to observe the workshop and write a message of gratitude on the 2X4s, which were graciously donated by 2X4s for HOPE and will be used in the construction of the tiny home.

AT&T’s Thank Our Heroes campaign works to bring communities together to support active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families across the country. This partnership with Operation Tiny Home represents part of AT&T’s $500,000 contribution to local organizations that support veterans and military personnel. AT&T is also partnering with organizations to host volunteer events in local communities such as this one around the country.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity. In the event that your device is lost or stolen, taking the proper security measures beforehand can help you protect your personal information. Below are some tips from AT&T on how you can secure your devices.

Lock it: Maximize your smartphone’s existing security features and set up a strong password or pin.

Back up your data: Save any personal data on your smartphone to the cloud or a backup device, so that it’s easily accessible in case you lose your device.

Remote Wipe Information: If your device is lost or stolen, prevent your contacts, photos and other personal information from getting into the wrong hands by remotely wiping your data. Here are some suggested free apps:

Find My Mobile: Find My Mobile allows you to track the location of your phone, lock it and wipe your device remotely if your smartphone is lost or stolen. You can also check the call log of your phone remotely for up to one week.

Find My iPhone: If your phone is lost or stolen, you can erase it remotely if you had previously set up Find My iPhone on the device.

AT&T Mobile Locate: With AT&T Mobile Locate, you can lock your device, back up and restore your data, and remote wipe your personal information if your phone has been lost or stolen.

If you’re in an area with limited or no cell service, Wi-Fi Calling is available on select devices and allows you to talk and text over an active Wi-Fi connection. If you have a device that supports Wi-Fi Calling and a postpaid wireless account set up for AT&T HD Voice, you can set up Wi-Fi Calling by going to the settings menu and turning it on. Once enabled, Wi-Fi Calling works automatically with your AT&T mobile number and compatible device—no new number or app required.

Enabling Wi-Fi Calling

iPhone: Go to the phone settings menu on your device and turn on Wi-Fi Calling. Android: Go to Call Settings, Quick Settings, or Connections Settings on your device and turn on Wi-Fi Calling.

Wi-Fi Calling billing is based on the number being called or messaged and is the same no matter where the Wi-Fi network connection is made.
