πππ πππππ. For one suspended instant, Harwin remained buried inside her, held motionless by the sheer violence of everything her words had awakened. His mouth was still open against hers; her breath entered him in hot, ragged bursts; her tongue sought his, her fingers clenching in his hair, and around him her body went on pleading; tightening, fluttering, drawing him deeper with every frantic pulse. The force of it tore their mouths apart. Rhaenyraβs head tipped back against his shoulder, and the sound that escaped her went through him with such terrible sweetness that his vision narrowed at the edges. He held himself there, buried as deeply as her body would take him, every muscle in his abdomen shuddering with the effort not to answer the demand she had made of him. His release gathered low and imminent, already beginning to pull tight through his spine. He could have given her what she asked for. ( One more thrust, perhaps two. ) But he wouldnβt give in that easilyβnot until he brought her over the edge first. His hand left her jaw to brace beside her head, and he kissed her with the full, starved force of all the words he could no longer arrange into sense. Her lower lip dragged between his teeth, and her answering moan went straight through him, tightening every muscle from his shoulders to his thighs, and when she tried to turn farther beneath himβseeking more of his mouth despite the awkward angleβhe followed until their noses struck and their breath became indistinguishable.
β Only yours, β he panted into the kiss. β You know I am. β
He drew back only far enough to see her; the side of her face shone with sweat and tears; her lips were swollen, her lashes clumped darkly together. There was nothing composed remaining in her expression, and the sight of it tightened something behind his ribs until love and lust became inseparable, both of them fierce enough to frighten him. Harwinβs hand left her throat and spread over the side of her belly. The curve of her was warm and hard beneath his palm, though whether from the position, the child shifting, or another tightening of the uterus he could not yet tell. Rhaenyra made an affronted, breathless sound and tried to press backward into him.Β
β There has never been a part of me that wasnβt. Not since you. β His nose brushed her cheek. He felt the hitch of her next breath against his lips. β My hands. My mouth. Every filthy thought youβve put in my head. β His hips rolled forward again, grinding at the deepest point until her fingers spasmed around his. β All yours. β
Harwin felt her nails bite into his scalp; her knees shifting wider in helpless invitation, her hips bucking backward with enough force to drive him deeper. Pleasure flashed white behind his eyes. He nearly lost himself then. His hips answered hers once, hard and instinctive, and the tight heat surrounding him dragged a guttural sound from his chest. He buried it against the curve of her neck. Every part of him had begun to shake with the effort of holding backβthe muscles in his thighs burning, his abdomen clenched hard enough to ache, his cock throbbing inside her with each frantic contraction of her walls. She was close enough now that he could feel the gathering inevitability of it. Her body had ceased merely responding to him. It was bearing down upon pleasure with the same formidable determination she brought to everything she desired, trying to wrench the ending from him before he had chosen to give it.
Even half-undone, she remained Rhaenyra.
A rough, breathless laugh broke against her skin.
β Gods . . . such a greedy, greedy thing you are. β He gave her another slow circle of his thumb, firmer than the first, and felt her collapse forward by an inch before his arm caught her. Her hand tore free of his hair to brace against the mattress. The sheets gathered beneath her fist. A thin, broken sound poured from her, rising helplessly as he repeated the motion. β You asked me to take you, β His mouth moved along the shell of her ear, his voice softened almost to tenderness even as his touch became merciless. β Now take it. β
He withdrew almost completely. The loss made her push back in immediate protest, but he held her hip and denied her for one breathβtwoβfeeling her tremble around the shallow stretch of him, hearing the small, furious noises gathering in her throat. Then he drove into her again.
β Mine, β he told her, quieter now, his lips moving against her temple. β My wife. My heart. Every impossible, demanding inch of you. β
The rhythm he found was nothing like the measured pace with which he had tormented her before; each thrust came deep and forceful, his hips striking flush against her, the bed shifting beneath the weight of them. Rhaenyra clung to him through it all. One hand locked around his forearm beneath her; the other reached blindly back until she found some part of himβhis shoulder, the nape of his neck, his hairβand held on. Her broken chants of his name dissolved into sounds, and each one drew him closer, each frantic clench of her body made his vision narrow until he could see nothing but the pale turn of her cheek and the silver-gold strands caught against her damp skin.
β Look at me. β He scarcely recognized the command until it had left him. Harwin covered her hand where it gripped his forearm; their fingers locked above the rounded fullness of her belly, wedding bands knocking together with a faint, absurd little click nearly swallowed by the sounds of their bodies. He pressed his forehead to hers. His thumb moved faster between her thighs, keeping pace with every hard drive of his hips, and he watched the last of her resistance disappear. β There you are, β he breathed, and he watched as her lips parted around a sob. β Come for me, love. Iβve got you. β
The first violent contraction of her release closed around him so tightly that his next thrust broke apart halfway through. Rhaenyraβs entire body drew taut beneath him, her head falling back against his shoulder, her mouth open on a cry that seemed to contain pleasure, pain, love, and fury in equal measure. He held her through it; his name fractured over and over upon her tongue. The sound undid him. His hips drove forward once more and stayed there. Harwin came with her name dragged raw from his throat, his body bowed over hers, every muscle locked as release struck through him in deep, blinding waves. He pressed himself as close as he could, giving her what she had begged of him while her body continued to pulse around him. There was no room left in him for thought. Only her heat. Her hand locked around his. Her hair caught against his lips. The wetness of her tears where his cheek pressed to hers. For several seconds neither of them moved. Harwin remained braced above her, struggling for breath without allowing the whole of his weight to settle upon her. His heartbeat struck hard against her back, and hers answered beneath his palm, racing through the place where his fingers rested below her breast. Gradually, the room returned around them; the low hum of the air conditioner, the soft complaint of the mattress whenever either of them trembled. He loosened his hold on her hair first, his fingers working carefully through the damp strands, unwinding what he had wrapped around his fist and smoothing it back from her face. He kissed the place near her temple where the tension might have pulled, then her cheek, then the corner of her mouth.Β
β I love you, β he whispered. β I love you so much . . . βΒ
It almost felt inadequate after what had just passed between them, but he said them anyway. ( He always would. ) He eased them down together with painstaking care, keeping one arm beneath her belly until the pillows took its weight again. Rhaenyra sagged into them with a low, exhausted sound, but Harwin stayed curved around her from behind, still joined to her, his palm spread possessively over the high, firm swell of their child while his breathing steadied against the nape of her neck. Rhaenyra made a tired sound when her cheek found the pillow. Harwin smiled despite himself.
β Yes, I know. Terrible ordeal. β His lips brushed her shoulder. β You were very brave. β
The sarcasm lacked all bite. Affection had made his voice too warm. He expected the answering nudge of her elbow or the offended tilt of her head. Instead she became very still. After a moment, Harwin withdrew gently and helped her turn onto her side, arranging the pillows beneath and around her before his hand returned immediately to her belly. His other palm passed over her damp forehead, brushing the tangled hair away. He studied her face now with an entirely different hunger, searching the set of her mouth and the line between her brows, trying to separate the aftershocks of pleasure from discomfort she might be attempting to conceal.
Β β Rest, sweetheart. Take some deep breathes for me . . . there you go. That's my good girl. How are you feeling? β He traced the outer edge of her eyebrow with one finger. He followed the fine line down her temple and tucked the damp strands of hair behind her ear. β Donβt move yet. Let me take care of you. You need some water . . . or perhaps a bath, hmmm? β
