I firmly believe that when Jing Beiyuan poisoned Wu Xi the next morning after they shared a bed, and Wu Xi was already unconscious on Beiyuan's lap, he took a moment to pull him closer and hug for the last time - he thought he'll die soon and never see Wu Xi again. So he paused. He indulged himself with a small moment of embracing this (his) too-fast-grown boy.

I imagine Jing Beiyuan hugging unconscious Wu Xi tightly for the last time before final parting, and whispering, burying his face into the carve of his neck: "You said you'd hate me forever... I know. I know. Deserved".

Tiny addition:

Months later, when Wu Xi a bit offendedly asks whether Beiyuan at least feels sorry, he honestly answers: "For lying to you? Probably, yes. For sending you away from the danger? No. And never will."
