“Alright class, your tests have been graded and entered in the grade,” she announces as she begins to pass back the tests to the students. A few sighed at their score, leading them to the teacher to announce her other news. “But to the ones that didn’t do so well, I am offering a student-student tutoring session every Monday after school. So, those students who scored well on the test, consider this as an opportunity to get volunteer hours. And to those who didn’t do so well, take this as an opportunity to get a better grade next time.”
The teacher places your test facing down and your heart dropped immediately. Slowly, you reveal the 71% written on the top right-hand corner of the paper. Sighing, you stuffed the paper into your notebook. On the other side of the classroom, Ha Sungwoon threw you a smug look as he shows you his paper. 104%.
Once again, your competition with him ended up with you as the loser once again. It wasn’t your fault that math wasn’t your best subject, just wait until you got to history. You could easily outsmart him on that subject for sure.
The teacher speaks up once again. “To explain this, students who scored more than an 80% will sign their name on the left-hand side of the paper and students who scored 79% and below will sign their name next to one of the names on the left-hand side. You sign your name as you exit the classroom.” As she finishes her sentence, the bell rings, signaling the end of fifth period.
As one of the last ones to leave the classroom, the only tutor without a name next to their was Sungwoon’s. Tapping the boy in front of you, Ong Seongwoo, you asked him if he wanted to switch tutors with you.
When hearing the name ‘Ha Sungwoon’, he immediately shakes his head. “He once called me out for not knowing what photosynthesis was, so I’m good without him as my tutor.”
“I’ll buy you snacks at the bakery for a month straight,” you offered, swallowing up your pride. The teacher interrupts your dealing and asks, “Is there something wrong?”
Seongwoo shakes his head. “Nothing, have a good day, y/n.” He waves goodbye to the both of you as you sigh and signed your name next to ‘Ha Sungwoon’.
Entering the classroom, you noticed Sungwoon was the only one sitting alone. When he notices your presence in front of him, his face contorts into a sneer. “You? I have to tutor you?!” He scoffs and crosses your arms.
“It’s not like I wanted you as my tutor,” you mumble as you set down your bag. “If you don’t want to tutor me, then I’ll be glad to tell the teacher that you don’t need these volunteer hours.”
He curses under his breath and sits up. “Whatever, what do you need help with?” You take out your test and handed it to him. He scans it thoroughly before speaking up once again, “You’re not supposed to cancel out the numbers when there’s a variable next to one of them. Look.”
He explains the problem as you watch him with confused eyes. “What?” you asked when he finishes.
Sungwoon sighs heavily. “This is not going to be easy for me, isn’t it?”
You and Sungwoon decided to study at the library that day, mainly because it was a lot quieter than the classroom, which meant you could listen to him easier.
Today, you were going over graphing, your worst subject. Although Sungwoon had thoroughly explained to you how to find the properties of the graph, you still weren’t able to grasp the information.
And Sungwoon’s constant remarks did nothing but fuel your internal conflict.
“What’s so hard about it?”
“It’s just domain and range.”
“Are you even using the graph? It’s there for a reason.”
“This isn’t rocket science, y/n.”
Cursing under your breath, you slam your pencil on the desk, shocking him. “If it’s so easy, then why can’t I understand it? Why am I having such a hard time with this? Why can’t I understand this despite how much I’ve been studying? It’s hard enough for me, but you don’t have to be constantly nagging behind my ears,” you spat out the words at him, your chest heaving up and down when you finish.
His eyes soften and he reaches down to pick up your pencil that rolled onto the floor. Speaking in a much calmer voice, he begins, “Alright. Let’s try this once again.”
You were still angry from your outburst but stayed quiet as he began to explain the lesson once again, this time more slowly. “To find the domain, look at the graph from left to right. Where do the x values start and end?”
He looks up and maintains eye contact with you as you form an answer. “-5 and 8.”
Nodding, he begins to write on your paper. “So, that’s your domain.” He writes (-5,8) next to domain and then moves on to the range. “Now look at the graph up to down, where does it start and end?”
Taking a look at the graph, you answer, “-1 and 6?”
He nods once again and writes (-1,6) next to the range. “Want to try the next one on your own?”
When you nod, he hands back your pencil to you and watches you as you solve the problem. After coming up with an answer, you look up at him and show him your paper. “See? I told you it was easy, you got it right. Good job.”
Sungwoon stares at you for a few minutes awkwardly coughing. “Alright, so next problem.”
It was the night of your prom and boy, were you excited. You found the perfect outfit, a champagne colored dress with matching heels, now all you needed was a date. At first, you thought of asking Sungwoon, whom you had begun to get close with, but he was your rival, was he not? So your next plan was to ask Kang Daniel, your longtime crush.
When a slow song begins to play, you scan the crowd for Daniel, who was near the doors with a drink in his hand. Mustering up your courage, you walk up to Daniel, who looks at you with expectant eyes when you tap his shoulder.
“Hey, y/n, how’s it going?” he asks.
Taking a deep breath, you ask, “Can we dance together?”
But before he could answer, another girl comes up and wraps his arm around his shoulder. Daniel quickly shifts eyes between the two of you as you stare at the girl in front of you.
“Sorry, y/n, but I already have a date,” he apologizes as he walks away with his date. As they walk away, you were left alone and speechless. Feeling growing pairs of eyes on you, you run out of the gym and into the empty hallways, where you curled up on your knees and went over the scene in your head.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. You thought of the words repeatedly and let your head rest on an empty locker. Why did you even think that Kang Daniel, the most popular boy in school, wouldn’t have a date?
Sighing heavily, you felt a tear drip down your cheek. And now you were crying over a boy who you never would have a chance with.
“Hey,” a gentle voice speaks. Your head lifts up slowly as you see Sungwoon in front of you. His hand reaches your face as he gently wipes away your tear with his thumb. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing,” you say as he takes a seat next to you. “Just heartbroken on what’s supposed to be the best night of my high school life.”
“It still could the best night of your life,” Sungwoon quietly says. “You don’t need that human fidget spinner as your date.”
Immediately, you chuckle at Sungwoon’s nickname for Daniel. He stands up and outstretches his hand. “Let’s go.”
“Go where?” you ask as you take his hand, standing in front of him.
“Like I said, this still could be the best night of your high school life, if you let me be your date.” Wait, did Sungwoon just ask you to be his prom date?
Letting him take your hand, he led you back to the dance floor, where you two swayed to the slow beat for a few minutes before Sungwoon speaks up. “y/n?”
“Hm?” you say as you meet his nervous eyes.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I don’t think I can hold it back anymore,” when you look at him with confused eyes, he speaks again, “I like you, y/n. And no matter how I think about it, it’s you that I like.”
He cuts you off, his hands slowly removing themselves from your waist. “It’s alright if you don’t like me back, I just wanted you to know my feelings before I get too involved.”
When he turns to leave, you grab his wrist, stopping. Turning around, he looks at you with confused eyes before you leaned towards him, your fingers finding their way to his face and kissed him.
“I like you, too,” you say when you pull away, your hands finding their way back to your body.
Sungwoon smiles as he tips your chin up. “In that case,” he says before kissing you again.
