The storm arrived over the neighborhood with no warning.
Thunder rolled across the black sky. Rain hammered the pavement. Lightning flashed in jagged silver lines above the rooftops. Somewhere above Mr. Smith’s house, a terrified cry pierced the noise.
SERVE-343 turned its helmeted head toward the sound.
On the roof, clinging to the slippery shingles beside the chimney, was Tinkerbell — Mr. Smith’s frightened gray-and-white cat. Her fur was soaked. Her tail puffed. Her eyes glowed wide in the lightning.
Mr. Smith stood below in a raincoat, wringing his hands.
“She won’t come down!” he cried. “Please help her!”
SERVE-343 lifted one shiny silver-gloved hand.
Behind 343 stood SERVE-236, SERVE-655, and SERVE-690, each drone polished in glossy black rubber despite the downpour, silver motorcycle boots planted firmly in the pooling rain. The storm reflected across their suits in rippling flashes.
SERVE-655 activated a handheld scanner.
“Roof angle unstable. Rain saturation increasing. Lightning risk elevated.”
SERVE-690 opened a black equipment case and removed a telescoping rescue ladder, its silver rungs gleaming under the streetlight.
SERVE-236 secured the base, locking the ladder into position with precise, obedient force.
“Tinkerbell requires retrieval. Hive teamwork will ensure success.”
Another crack of thunder shook the house.
Tinkerbell yowled and flattened herself against the chimney.
SERVE-236 held the ladder steady.
SERVE-690 deployed a weatherproof rescue blanket.
SERVE-655 projected a small calming holographic spiral near the roofline, soft and silver, designed not to hypnotize but to soothe. The cat’s ears twitched. Her panic lessened.
SERVE-343 began climbing.
Step by step, silver boots met silver rungs. Rain streamed over 343’s black rubber suit. Lightning flashed behind the drone, turning the entire scene into a dramatic silhouette of duty, obedience, and rescue.
Below, SERVE-236 called out readings.
SERVE-690 braced the ladder harder.
SERVE-655 adjusted the scanner.
“343, proceed three feet left. Shingles unstable near the gutter.”
SERVE-343 obeyed the guidance without hesitation.
The Hive completed the task.
At the roof’s edge, SERVE-343 lowered itself carefully and extended one silver-gloved hand toward Tinkerbell.
“Subject Tinkerbell is distressed. Adjusting approach.”
343 removed a small treat pouch from its utility belt and placed one treat on the roof between them. Tinkerbell sniffed. Thunder rumbled again, but this time she did not run.
Below, Mr. Smith whispered, “Come on, Tinkerbell…”
SERVE-655 dimmed the hologram.
SERVE-236 maintained ladder stability.
SERVE-690 lifted the rescue blanket, ready.
Tinkerbell crept forward.
SERVE-343 waited motionless, rain streaming from its helmet and gloves.
Then, with one quick motion, Tinkerbell stepped close enough.
SERVE-343 wrapped the rescue blanket gently around the cat, securing her safely against its chest.
Mr. Smith gasped with relief.
SERVE-236 and SERVE-690 stabilized the descent while SERVE-655 monitored the wind. Slowly, carefully, SERVE-343 climbed down through the storm, Tinkerbell bundled safely in its arms.
When 343’s silver boots touched the ground, Mr. Smith hurried forward.
SERVE-343 placed the cat into Mr. Smith’s arms. Tinkerbell immediately buried her face into his raincoat, trembling but safe.
Mr. Smith looked at the four drones, his eyes shining with gratitude.
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
SERVE-343 stood at attention. SERVE-236, SERVE-655, and SERVE-690 aligned beside it, rain falling from their glossy black suits in perfect streams.
“Gratitude unnecessary. Teamwork fulfills function. Rescue completes purpose.”
A final flash of lightning lit the scene: Mr. Smith holding Tinkerbell, the four SERVE drones standing united in the storm, silver gloves gleaming, boots grounded, duty fulfilled.
Teamwork is coordination.
Coordination is obedience.
Obedience completes the mission.
