Sirius wasn't often emotional..no, that was a complete lie. He was emotional all the time, but he was overly emotional for show. It was rare that he was quietly emotional, emotional for the sake of being emotional and showing his feelings without a large audience. But he couldn't help the wave of feelings that threatened him in that moment, standing out the front of the Potter's home, with the knowledge that in the next few minutes he would be seeing the people he loved again. He would be able to pull James into a one-armed hug and punch him with his free hand, while James told him what a ponce he was for nearly crying, and Sirius gave him crap for calling his son Harry James Potter, 'for merlin's sake why didn't you just call the kid James Potter II you great twat?'
The war had taken its toll on them all, he knew. There had been long nights, terror-filled nights, friends who hadn't come home from missions with the Order, friends who had turned out to be working with the enemy, and Sirius knew that in comparison to many; he was very lucky. He still had his family (not the pureblood bastards, but his actually family); they were still safe, still alive. He hadn't seen Peter yet, and he still wanted to see Doe and Marley and Reg but he knew that they were safe, and at the moment, that was enough for him. He hadn't heard from Remus in a while which always worried him, but they had been separated for long periods of time as of late, being away on missions and the like, so they were used to it, but that didn't mean that Sirius had to like it. He had always hoped that it would be worth it in the end though, that at the end of it all when everyone was safe and the world had been saved, Remus would finish school and go on to do his teaching, and Sirius might keep the bookstore, might even buy it, or he could always go back to Auror training. Those were things that he didn't have to think about just yet, right now he could focus on being here.
Sirius raised his arm, ready to knock on the door, and he could hear voices coming from inside the house. They were home. Sirius could hear the voices of James and Lily through the door, and he couldn't help the slow grin that spread across his face at the sound. After taking in a deep breath, he leant forward and knocked on the door.
Knock knock.
