IZZY:
“ that and I was the only ER resident he agreed to teach. getting him to teach surgical residents was hard enough—I just followed him around until he gave in. ” it was one of izzy’s fonder memories of the plastic surgeon. he could be decent, when he wasn’t hitting on her or trying to get her to agree to go out for drinks, and teaching brought out a different side of him. she doubted she would have gotten to know him any other way if it weren’t for that. “ he was a good guy. ”
izzy knew how to wrap sprains but watching callie do it was something else. izzy was a jack-of-all-trades down in the ER but it was also nice to see the pride in others’ specialities at work. that said, it would have been preferable if it weren’t on her. “ I feel like someone who fell in front of what felt like half the hospital—still kind of embarrassed about that. but that feels good, thanks. ”
“how he managed to get away with not actually teaching a majority of the time really is beyond me.” she let out a laugh, giving a tiny shake of her head. she could still remember the stories that mark had told her about izzy. even then, callie had been impressed by the ER resident who couldn’t be seduced by mark sloan. “he was the best.” callie added softly, her heart still warm as she thought about him.
she gave a small shrug of her shoulders, hoping that if she acted nonchalant about the whole thing, it’d help. “you’re fine, really. just know that every second that passes here, there’s always someone doing something embarrassing. yeah, you fell outside. in front of a lot of people. like BOOM -- down you went.” the ortho surgeon snorted. “I’m sorry but I just trying to picture it in my head. okay, okay ---- anyway. since you’ve been in here, there are probably like five other embarrassing things that people have done that everyone is talking about.”

❝ torres, look everything is fine. ❞ mark turned his head and looked at his best friend. the plane crash had taken a toll on everyone involved, but mark had a feeling that slowly things were starting to slip back into what felt like a normal routine. or as normal as things could get after a major life changing event happens. ❝ i’m feeling fine and i just want to get back to work. ❞
“you don’t need anything? do you need to sit down? god why do they keep this place so cold -- like we’re preserving people or something. we could probably find you thicker scrubs or something.” she was sure there wasn’t a single second that had gone by since the crash where she wasn’t completely freaked out. as hard as she tried to come off as cool and collected, reality was much different. she shoved her hands deep into the pockets of her coat -- anything to stop from fidgeting so much.
REGINA
“it’s definitely not a bad thing.” She rolled her eyes and kissed Callie’s cheek when she showed her the picture. She was proud of it. “Absolutely beautiful.” Regina was lost, watching her wife, before she realized that the camera had been taken from her. “Oh god, Calliope.” She chuckled and fixed her hair, laying on her side and propping her head up on her hand. “How’s this?”
“that’s perfect.” a wide smile seemed to be a permanent feature of her face. her wife could have posed any way she wanted, and callie would have been just as captivated. “alright, now give me something silly and I promise we can leave this hotel room.”
MARK:
he would like to believe their daughter wouldn’t do such a thing. but he’d be lying if he said he wouldn’t have pulled it when he was little. “ i don’t know , she’s still got kid instincts. isn’t that what they all do ? ”
“probably. I really like to think of sofia as being on this whole other level -- maybe that’s just me being in denial, I don’t know.” she made a face at her best friend. “is it bad that I’m terrified for our daughter to grow up?”
ALEX:
‘ i’m being weird ? callie, you’re one of the best orthopaedic surgeons and you’re sitting here on the couch moping because you got one tiny thing wrong. ’ alex raised an eyebrow, staring at the woman in front of her. ‘ and besides, i’m in here because i can’t do my part of the job until my patients done with her surgery, so i’m just waiting for her to get out so i can go do my post-ops. ’
she knew alex was right -- though she refused to admit it. if she accepted that, it would mean leaving the pity party she was currently throwing for herself. “I got one ‘tiny’ thing wrong that almost cost my patient a limb.” she mumbled, attempting to disappear into the couch more. “tell me about your case?”
‘ want me to stay? ’ (Regina)
“you don’t have to.” the words fell from her lips out of habit. the last thing she wanted was another person around to witness her emotional break down. no matter how many times she told herself she was going to start handling things differently, callie still seemed to bottle everything up until it exploded. still, she liked regina. there was something comforting about her presence. more than that, she didn’t want to be alone. “would you mind? it’s just been .... a really crappy day” she asked, almost afraid that the answer could be anything but no.

“and what makes you so sure about that?” callie challenged, refusing to believe that she wasn’t destined to end up sad and alone. she thought about the story of king midas, and how everything he touched turned to gold. everything she touched seemed to turn to shit lately. “I feel like I’m messing everything up.” she breathed out, burying her face in her hands.

the second the words fell from arizona’s lips, callie did not hesitate to elimate the distance between them. she joined her wife on the couch, carefully putting her head in the lap of the woman she loved. there was no place she felt more at home, and no place else she would have rather been. making sure to face the blond, she slipped her fingers beneath the soft fabric of arizona’s shirt, searching for even softer skin. “can we stay like this forever?” she said softly.

IZZY
“ got a few tips from sloan when I was a resident. figured a lot of patients could get out of here a lot faster if I didn’t have to page for plastics… but I couldn’t exactly send them off looking like frankenstein had sewn them up. ” as for learning with her non-dominant hand, it was for the extra practice. the more practice she had with both hands, the better her sutures were overall. they were a large part of her job after all.
nodding, izzy moved the ice off of her wrist so that callie could wrap it. she could already see the deep reds and purples of a nasty bruise forming and wrinkled her nose in displeasure. she did perk up, however, at the mention of coffee. “ sure. I could use it before the crazy starts. ”
her heart sank at the smallest mention of her best friend. though the pain of losing him -- her first true friend, the father of her child -- wasn’t as heavy on her heart as it once was, she still missed him. deeply. not only was he a great guy, he really had been a great surgeon as well. “i bet it was so satisfying, too -- not having to depend on someone else and still managing to not only get it done yourself, but do it well. “
she took izzy’s hand in her own, her muscle memory taking over as she continued their conversation. “the last few moments of normalcy.” callie said with a grin, finishing up. she took a moment to examine the work she’d done, a feeling of pride washing over her. she truly loved what she did. “aaand you’re all set. how does that feel?”

REGINA
“If you say so.” Regina rolled her eyes again and opened up the preview of the picture. “Unfortunately yes. I do know what you mean even when what you say makes no sense. Marriage will do that to ya.” She turned the camera around so that Callie could see. “See? You do look cute when you’re not jostling around like a cat on the prowl.”
“you just know me so well.”. she flashed her wife a cheesy grin, the smile stretching from one ear to the other. her focus shifted to the picture, the smile instantly returning as she saw herself through her wife’s eyes. though it didn’t need to be captured on film for her to know it, callie could see she radiated happiness. before regina could protest, she made her wife the focus of a new picture. “you’re turn.”
ARIZONA
“ that i’ve been a SHITTY person lately. ” a bit broad, she’s been an asshole since the plane crash, “ to everyone. but especially to you. i — god, calliope you deserved so much better than that, you DO deserve so much better. ” there’s a deep, shuddering intake of breath between her words, “ i’d like… i’d like to try and be better. with you. ”
callie’s heart sunk as she listened to the blonde, her face softening as she started to see life through arizona’s eyes. she’d rebuilt her life, one without the woman in front of her — yet here they stood, once again. “i did deserve better,” she said after a moment, “but so did you. i’m not always the ... easiest to be with, i know. i-i-i talk too loud, i say the wrong things, i yell.” but god did she love her. as uncertain as life had become over the years, even as she fought her way back to normalcy, one thing was abundantly clear — she didn’t want a life without arizona robbins. “if we’re gonna do this, you’re not the only one who has to try and do better. i’m no saint in all of this.” callie bit her lip, looking anywhere that wasn’t her ex wife. “i— would you want to...to have dinner? with me? sometime?”
