Today is the Victory Day!
80 years ago our ancestors defeated the army of nazis and fascists that had gained great might over the previous decades. Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers paid the ultimate price to give us the right to live - and live freely, not under the boot of a self-proclaimed "ubermensch". And it is true that there's no such a family in Russia - and previously in USSR - that wasn't touched by that terrible war.
That's why every Russian with self-respect keeps and honours the memory of our Soviet people who fought in the Great Patriotic War and crushed that "brown plague". It is literally the 2nd birthday for each one of us.
To put it simple and personal, had the Red Army and Soviet people not resisted, fought and triumphed, I wouldn't have existed. My mother wouldn't have been born. My Mom's parents (children at the time) would either have been killed (possibly drained out of blood for the nazi "knights of light") or taken away and into slavery.
That's how much May 9th means to me and mine.
Thus, my congratulations to friends and fellow folks!
The Radiant Heritage of Izhoria and the Spirit of Ingria
The traditional attire of an Izhorian woman, as seen in this striking image, serves as a vibrant gateway into the soul of Ingria (Ingermanland), a historic region nestled along the shores of the Gulf of Finland. This costume is a masterpiece of Finno-Ugric craftsmanship, where every element carries profound meaning: the dominant white and red palette symbolizes purity and vital energy, while the intricate geometric embroidery on the sleeves and chest traditionally acted as protective amulets. The elaborate headdress and beaded ornaments are not merely decorative but reflect the wearer’s social status and the high level of textile artistry for which Izhorian women were renowned. Through this dress, one can see the resilience of a culture that has flourished at the crossroads of maritime trade and ancient forests for over a millennium.
Beyond the aesthetics of the cloth, Izhorian culture is defined by an incredibly rich oral tradition and a deep spiritual connection to the Northern landscape. As one of the indigenous peoples of Ingria, the Izhorians preserved a vast treasury of "runic" songs—epic tales of creation and folklore similar to those found in the Finnish Kalevala—which were passed down through generations by legendary song-mistresses. Their way of life was inextricably linked to the sea and the rhythms of nature, shaping a identity that is both sturdy and poetic. Today, as the Izhorian language and customs face the threat of extinction, this costume stands as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of Ingria, representing a unique cultural mosaic that continues to fascinate historians and ethnographers alike
