Annalisa looked up at the sound of a bullet being fired.
BANG BANG BANG BANG
Her heart jumped up into her throat at the heavy rainfall pattering against the window accompanying the rapid fire gunshots pulsing throughout the air.
BANG BANG BANG BANG
I felt safe, tucked away in my boyfriend’s library with a soft butter yellow blankie tucked around my legs, successfully keeping me warm from the early March chill.
BANG BANG BANG BANG
I was suddenly curious as to who my boyfriend was fighting, and against the little whisper telling me not to, I left the safety of the library, setting aside the book that I had been reading and neatly folding my blankie.
“You will never hurt her ever again!”
I paused at the infuriated rage in Bucky’s voice and inadvertently sped up to see who he was pissed at this time.
“I’m not the one who should be worried about hurting her.”
My blood went cold at the calculated voice of my father echoing throughout the otherwise abandoned lower floor of the home as I crept my way down the stairs.
Bucky laughed forcibly as I heard his favorite revolver- the one that he only reserved for personal kills- being readied with a singular bullet as I picked up a small handgun that I knew he kept concealed underneath the table in the downstairs hallway.
I had to protect my papa.
The thought was all I had in my head as I arrived at the door to Bucky’s office, where I peered into the partly opened door and found my boyfriend fitting the muzzle of his gun to my papa’s forehead.
I aimed and pulled the trigger.
CRACK CRACK
A scream was ripped from my throat as my papa slumped over, dead from my poorly aimed shot. Bucky jumped and spun around, firing off two blind shots with a resonating BANG that echoed throughout the house as the bullet exploded into my knee before ripping out the other side of my legs and exploding into the wall directly behind me.

Annalisa had been surprised when the mob boss had showed her to a small but roomy bedroom; she had thought that he would insist that they would both share a bed, just like old times. She had found that her clothes had been neatly folded and put away and the four books that she had bought with her were neatly stacked away on the otherwise empty bookcase.
She groaned as she took a seat on her bed, throwing her legs up and kicking off her shoes- her knee was killing her right about now.
Knock knock knock
“Who is it?” she called out, stuffing a pillow underneath her knee. The door opened and a tall redhead with playful eyes entered.
Natasha Romanoff, Bucky Barnes’ person assassin.
“Hey, how you doing?” she greeted her with an accented voice, setting a wrapped ice pack onto her knee.
“Alright Nat,” Annalisa grinned painfully. “Had you met the twins?”
“Sarah Jo is quite attached to her daddy,” Nat commented drily as Annalisa began to gently rotate her knee. “Have you thought about schools for them next year?”
“Not yet, why?” she grumbled as the aching pain in her knee dulled down a tiny bit under the ice.
“Well, Bucky asked me if I thought you would agree to send the twins to a private school or if you would rather homeschool them,” she shrugged simply. “Also, his cook is making burgers and French fries for dinner tonight and the twins were asked to assist him- do you want me to go and ask him to box up an order to be delivered to your room?”
“Yes please, I think I’ll be off my feet for the rest of the night,” Annalisa moaned. “I think I’ll need help getting to the bathroom to take a shower though.”
“Do you want me to go tell Bucky or do you want me to help you?” Nat asked in a kindly voice.
“Can you help me?” Annalisa meeped in a timid voice. “Please?”
“Of course.” Nat stood from the bed. “I’ll be back in about twenty minutes, okay?”
“Okay,” Annalisa said, laying backwards into the pillows. “I think I’ll take a nap in the meantime.”

“Knock knock, doll.”
Annalisa woke up at once as Bucky came into her room, a tray with dinner in hands, which he set onto the bed next to her before taking a seat in the chair that was station over in a corner.
“The cook loves the kids and they helped with making dinner,” he revealed as Annalisa removed the top bun to take inventory of everything that was on her burger. “Well done with just meat, cheese, the buns and ketchup- just the way you’ve always like it, am I right?”
Annalisa was only silent as she began to nibble at her food, finding her heart beginning to beat a little bit faster than normal.
“Ana, can we talk?” he begged next, seemingly uncomfortable with the terse silence. “Please?”
“You talk, I’m eating,” she grumbled, wriggling the toes on her bad foot.
Bucky barked out a good natured chuckle at his ex’s way of making his feel like a little boy.
“Very well then, do you remember that date night we went on where I was almost assassinated?” he asked her, switching up the mood in the room almost at once.
Annalisa nodded, remembering the small Italian mom and pop restaurant where he had treated her for dinner, followed by a stroll through the quiet park. A bullet had almost killed Bucky, if not for his bodyguard, Steve Rogers, jumping to catch it. He had luckily survived, but now had a nasty scar on his shoulder.
“Your father hired a hitman to take me out,” he explained tersely, nodding at her horrified gasp. “He was still so dead set about marrying you off to Johann Schmidt, the fucking coward.”
Annalisa wrinkled her nose- Johann Schmidt, aka Red Skull, had been an old friend of her father’s who had practically seen her grow up right in front of his perverted eyes. At least thirty years her senior, the slimy little man had been most displeased when his soon bride-to-be sought out refuge in the arms of one of his most hated enemies.
“I have receipts for you to look over if you don’t believe me,” Bucky offered up almost at once. “Is it alright with you if I get them to you tomorrow after we get back from the hospital?”
“The hospital?” Annalisa wrinkled her nose. “Why are earth will we go to the hospital tomorrow?”
“Well, tomorrow I will be tested to see if I’m a match for my son, and if I am, I want to find out what would happen moving forward,” he explained.
“But what if you’re not a match for Jimmy?” she asked, popping the last French fry into her mouth and chewing.
“What are you saying?” Bucky asked her as she set aside the now empty tray.
“What I’m saying is that sometimes, the parents and siblings aren’t always a perfect match,” she explained. “Sarah Jo isn’t even close to being a match, and I’m not really a good candidate with my knee being completely fucked up.”
“Ah, well then I guess I’d ask my men to be tested,” he answered with a half shrug. “I’m guessing that Jimmy was named after me?”
“Yeah, he was,” she responded. “I was initially going to name him John, after my brother, but then when I first saw him, I knew that he was truly a James, inside and out.”
“And who was Sarah Jo named after?” he inquired next, leaning forward in his chair.
“Sarah after your mom, Josephina after my mom,” she explained. “And now, I’d like to shower- can you help me please?”
“Sure thing.” Bucky came over and picked her up before carrying her into the en suite bathroom, which she realized had an ADA certified bench in the bathtub, a basket of floral scented bath bombs on the toilet and a cup with whiteboard markers sitting next to the mirror over the sink. “Do you want a sit down bubble bath or a stand up shower?”
“The bubble bath sounds absolutely divine!” she smiled as he settled the plug into the drain and started to facet before ducking out to give her some privacy.

Forty minutes later, Annalisa, the twins and Steve exited the apartment building, the man carrying both duffle bags and the four year old twins holding onto their mother’s hands as they all approached the Lincoln.
James Barnes’ eyes flew comically large at the two little children. For once, the most feared mob king in all New York was stunned into silence as he opened the back door. Little Sarah Jo scrambled in without a care while little James Jr. struggled to get in.
Before Annalisa could help him in, Bucky scooped him into his arms and held the sick little boy in his arms as he promptly nodded off to sleep, grasping at his coat in his tiny little hands.
“Hello, Annalisa,” he greeted his ex-girlfriend with a small smile, helping her into the car before getting in and Steve got into the driver’s seat.
“James,” she greeted him stiffly, situating herself into her seat directly in front of the mobster and their son.
“Mommy, Jimmy and Mr. James both have the same name!” bubbled Sarah Jo excitedly as Bucky leaned across to buckle her into a booster seat that he had bought- one for each child, top of the line and from the best manufactures.
“Huh, isn’t that ironic?” Annalisa snarked as she eyeballed her ex-boyfriend, who was smiling as he settled Jimmy into his booster seat, his movements gentle and careful as he buckled the sleeping child in before turning to face her.
“Ana, it’s been far too long,” he sighed, a small smile on his handsomely bearded face.
“Not long enough,” she retorted hotly, not looking away as his sky blue eyes locked onto her sapphire hued eyes. “I could’ve done an entire lifetime without seeing you again!”
“Mommy!” Sarah Jo gasped. “That’s not a nice thing to say!”
Bucky burst out into sudden laughter, joined by Steve’s gruff chuckles as he turned into a driveway and went up to the mob boss’ massive estate home, located out in the countryside of New York.
“Alright now, do you want to see your new bedrooms?” Bucky asked the plucking little girl as he undid his and his son’s seatbelts.
“Will Jimmy and I have our own bedrooms, or will we share?” Sarah Jo wondered as she latched onto her mother’s hand.
“You both have your own bedrooms, but will share a bathroom.” annaline knew automatically that he was talking about the Jack and Jill, located just down the hall from the master bedroom.
“God, you thought of everything, haven’t you?” she snorted sarcastically, coming to a stop at the stairs. Bucky noticed and pointed over to where a handicapped lift had been installed into the side of the stairs. On the other side, was a little handrail, set at just the perfect height for the twins to easily go upstairs and downstairs again.
“Just about,” he grinned as she began to go up the stairs with a speedy little whirl, Sarah Jo coming up to seize Bucky’s hand as the four of them headed up the stairs.
“In here, Miss Sarah Jo,” he told her, opening a door to reveal every little girl’s dream bedroom- the walls were painted a pink white ombre, the walls were tastefully decorated with portraits of scenes from fairy tales, and the canopy bed was draped in pale violet.
“WOWIE!” she yelled before going off to explore the book corner as Bucky went into the adjoining room, revealing a bedroom that looked to be inspired by a treehouse- the hardwood floors, a little ladder led up into a little hidey hole and a closet that was set into the trunk of the faux tree made Annalisa feel like she was a child again.
“Wow, never thought that you’d be the fatherly type,” she quipped as she watched Bucky settled Jimmy down onto his bed, where she noticed that an IV pole was lingering, waiting to be used. “Tomorrow, we’re scheduled to go to the hospital so that Jimmy can receive dialysis.”
“Perfect.” Annalisa blinked owlishly, confused at his please word. “I want to be tested to see if I’m a match to donate a kidney to my son.”
She opened her mouth to protest only to be cut off by a fierce snarl as he led her out and into the hallway.
“You will not fight me on this, his is MY son!” he told her in a final tone of voice. “He is my son, and I will move heaven and earth to give both him and my daughter a good life.”
“Fine.” Bucky couldn’t believe his ears- had stubborn Annalisa Olive Stone bended the metaphorically knee to him? “But I don’t want you to tell them that you’re their father.”
“Why not?” Bucky snapped before seeing the barely there flinch from the mother of his children. He reached for her hand, squeezing it apologetically. “Why not?” he repeated in a gentler tone of voice.
“Because you murdered my father, and therefor, you do not get the pleasure of my twins calling you their father.”

THE INTERVIEW

I am so terribly sorry! I accidently posted this chapter to another Tumblr account of mine. Never you mind any, dear readers of mine- I caught the error and now am reposting chapter six of The Selection onto the right Tumblr profile!
I forced a smile onto my face as I balanced a plate with a sandwich and sliced fruit on my lap. Much to my surprise, the other Selected women were sweet and kind to me- cousins Peggy and Sharon Carter, Daisy Johnson with her jittery eyes, Chinese-American Melinda May, hyper go happy Darcy Lewis, kind worded Jane Foster, Ruby Hale with her unsmiling lips, Jemma Simmons with her wayward brown curls, Natasha Romanoff with her soft accented words, Staff Sergeant Carol Danvers with her way of walking that commanded respect, rough around the edges sisters Gamora and Nebula Titan, pale haired Yelena Bolova and sweet worded Kamala Khan. I had snuck on my tattered boots before leaving my bedroom suite, on edge from years of raids and eager for comfort.
Phil Coulson was conducting the interview, the other Selected sitting in two neat rows behind the interview podium, Yelena nervously codeswitching between English and Russian. I focused my attention onto my fingernails, short and jagged from being chewed on whenever anxiety would hit me.
“Yelena Bolova, everyone!” Phil ended the interview, sending the girl back to her seat next to Natasha. He smiled charmingly into the camera that was recording everything and broadcasting live across television screens across the nation. “Coming up after the commercial break, we get to know more about Lady Rosebella Swan, so stay tuned!”
Everyone’s eyes were suddenly on me, making me feel extremely self-conscious of myself. Even though I was dressed in a nice dress with my hair tied back in a loose braid and my tattered leather jacket slung over my arms casually, I still felt so naked and exposed.
“Come, come now!” Phil coaxed me gently, and I stood up on shaking legs and made my way over towards him with my heart thudding wildly in my chest. “Here, you can set that plate up right up here now.”
He patted the table that separated the both of us from one another, where I settled my food. Before settling myself into a comfortable position.
“You are allowed to be nervous,” he coached me in a gentle tone. “But I do think that it would be best for you to show people that you are nervous- after all, people see you as a fish out of water.”
“What are you on about?” I asked him, taking his device from him, where I saw a live video playing of the interview. I rewound a few seconds previously and saw that when he announced who was next up to be interviewed, it was footage of me fighting bandits back in Wakanda, dirt and grit on my face as arrow after arrow left my bow, deadly and fierce. All in all, the videography was expressive and told a story in the short ten seconds of the segment.
“How do you feel?” he asked me quietly, leaning in to better hear me as someone came up with a microphone to hook me up.
I shrugged, my nerves on high alert as I was fitted, my mind in a clear set fight or flight mode.
“And we’re back again! Joining me is Lady Rosabella Swan of Wakanda!”
I knew that this was my cue to say something, but I could only blink slowly.
Phil paused for a moment to give me time to speak if I wanted before rolling into his short introduction.
“Coming from the small town of Wakanda, located just on the outskirts of Brooklyn, Lady Rosabella Swan comes from a tight knit community where bandits hunt and kill as they please. Armed with her trusty bow and arrow, this warrior queen is not afraid to do whatever it takes to defend those who she loves.”
I wrinkled my nose at his descriptive quip, and he caught it.
“So do tell me, how you felt about being among the fourteen other Selected?” he asked me first.
“I didn’t know that I had been among the Selected until the king and the princes rolled up to Wakanda with the news,” I answered after a moment’s hesitation. “No one in Wakanda has a TV or a radio. Those are considered as luxuries, and we didn’t have the time of day for anything like that.”
“Oh.” Here, Phil blinked, having been taken completely by surprise by my blunt answer. “What is your favorite childhood memory?”
“I don’t really have those either,” I confessed sheepishly. “But I remember when I first killed a bandit- I threw up everything that I’d eaten for breakfast just a few short hours beforehand and was unable to sleep for four nights in a row.”
“Oh my…” I felt bad for breaking the man.
“Wakanda is not for the faint at heart, I can say that much,” I chuckled humorlessly. “There was only one cow, so milk was almost always rationed, along with eggs, meats and breads. Clothings were patched time and time again until they were practically being held together by thread. My favorite pair of boots are being held together by duct tape- look here now!” I raised the skirt of the pretty dress I was wearing to show off my favorite boots, pieced together with endless strips of duct tape. “Education was deemed worthless- our first priority was surviving, and what use would being able to read a book be if we weren’t able to do that? I would often go to bed three or four days in a row without food in my belly just to ensure that everyone at least had a little bit to eat.”
I could tell that everyone was staring at me in horror at the clear picture I was painting for them.
“I’m an orphan thanks to the bandits. We would get hit by them, seemingly almost every other day, sometimes up to two or three times in a single day. They have one thing only on their minds- kill. They killed my da, and they dragged my mom off and they-” I choked, forcing myself not to cry. “There’s not a day that passes by when I don’t hear her screams echoing in my head.”
Several gasps reached my ears as the only tear slid down my face.
“We didn’t have much, but what all we had, we shared with one another; clothes, food and tools alike,” I finished up, hating how vulnerable I was.
The entire room was silent for a few minutes, the stillness only breaking when a bloodied figure tumbled into the room.

“Mommy?” Annalisa looked up from the book she was reading and smiled at her four year old daughter, who was glued to her younger twin’s side, like always.
“Yes, Sarah Jo?” smiled the mother, setting aside the book so that she was giving her children her full attention.
“Can Jimmy and I please watch some TV?” she asked ever so politely, making the single mother smile as she took up the remote and switched it onto Disney Channel, where Cinderella was playing.
As the twins settled down to watch the film, Annalisa couldn’t help but notice yet again how different the two were.
Their father’s dark hair, her bouncy curls.
His piercing blue eyes, her fair skin.
His smile, her freckles.
It almost hurt to look at them, but it was a comforting kind of pain.
Just then, a sharp knock sounded at the front door, making Annalisa’s eye quirk up.
“I’ll be back in a few minutes- you two, behave!” she sternly told them before limping off to answer the door. She reached it a few minutes later; her knee was killing her today; the sharp, burning pain making standing, let alone walking painfully agonizing. Against her better judgment, she opened the door without looking into the peephole.
“Steve?” she lowered her voice at the last possible second, not wanting for the man to know about the twins.
“Annalisa Stone,” he greeted her with a small smile. “You hadn’t changed much since I saw you last.”
“Yeah, that bullet was removed and I’d cut my hair since then,” she couldn’t help but sass him. She bit her lip and turned her head away from him, ashamed at her words.
“Down to business,” Steve said, quickly changing the subject as he reached inside his jacket. Annalisa flinched, thinking that he was going for his gun and shoot her. Instead, the man pulled out a few photographs and handed them to the single mother.
Annalisa’s heart stopped beating for a few moments.
The photograph was of the three of them- Sarah Jo, James Jr. and her at an ice cream parlor, eating frozen treats.
“What do you want from me?” she whimpered, her eyes shutting as she tried to calm the quickly brewing panic attack.
“The boss heard that he has a son,” Steve said, not noticing Annalisa’s shoulders sagging slightly at the somewhat relieving news. “He wants to meet him.”
“And if I refuse?” Annalisa was surprised at where her gusto was coming from; she was never this brave before.
“No one ever says no to the boss,” Steve chuckled darkly, motioning towards the window, inviting her to take a look outside. She limped over to the window and looked out, feeling as though she was going to have deadly heart failure.
There was a black a Lincoln outside, and leaning against the car was the one person who Annalisa had never though she’d see again.
James Buchanan Barnes.
The most dangerous and powerful mob boss on the entire east coast.
“Mommy?”
The single mother turned to Jimmy. his bald little head and deep bags under his eyes making her want to cry.
“Yes, Jimmy?” Annalisa asked, fighting back the tears that were threatening to stain her pretty face once more.
“Can Sarah Jo and I have some Teddy Grahams, please?” he asked, just as politely as his sister, the grip on his teddy blanket never wavering.
“Of course, sweetie,” she smiled, ignoring Steve as she limped over to the tiny kitchen. “Come here, munchkin.” Jimmy was at her side in an instant as she opened the cupboard and picked him up effortlessly, holding him so that he could get the box of teddy bear shaped snacks down.
“You know, you could’ve always asked me to help get them down,” Steve remarked dryly, resulting in Jimmy hiding behind her as shyness over crept him once more.
“I was getting along just fine without you in my life,” Annalisa stiffly responded, getting down two bowls and pouring in enough to satisfy two bellies until dinnertime. “Here we are, munchkin- come on, let’s go give Sarah Jo her snack!”
Jimmy followed after his mother with Steve taking up the rear, nearly tripping over a miniature toy truck. The three of them entered the cramped living room, where Stephanie was singing along to the movie. Her twin bounced back up to her with the snacks in hand.
Steve turned to her with wide eyes full of questions.
“Yes,” Annalisa answered his unasked question. “Twins. Sarah Jo is the oldest at eighteen minutes. Born October 21st.” A choked sob bubbled from out of her throat as she forced her knees not to crumple. “Jimmy is sick- he needs a new kidney…”
Steve sighed as he took out his phone, leaving the single mother to watch him with terrified eyes.
“Boss.” Annalisa knew who he was talking to. “The situation is more complex then we had originally thought.” She could hear mumbling on the other end of the line and she went over to the twins, getting down onto the floor with difficulty.
“Sarah Jo, James…” you whispered softly, licking your lips nervously. “How about if the three of us go for a little trip?”
“To Disney World?” asked little Jimmy, an excited glint in his eyes as he jumped up and down a few times.
Annalisa heard Steve chuckle softly under his breath, however she just ignored him.
“Maybe, if you both are on your tip top best behavior, understand me?” she asked them before going to get back up again, struggling as her bad knee refused to cooperate.
“Here, let me-” Steve seized her underneath an armpit and heaved her to her feet, keeping a hand wrapped around her shoulder as she regained back her balance once more. “You know something, Buck would happily pay for a knee replacement, if you wanted one.”
“Steven Grant Rogers.” The tall blond mobster’s face immediately developed a cow expression, causing for the four year old twins to erupt into giggles. “Don’t push it. I’m already letting the man meet my twins. We’ll take it from there on out.”
“Yes ma’am,” Steve meeped as the woman stopped by the coat closet to grab two duffle bags before going into the twin’s shared bedroom to start packing what all they’d need while away from home.

A MEAL WITH THE OTHER SELECTED

“Lady Rosabella, are you hungry?” Lucy asked me as I was eyeballing the towering skyscraper shoes that I would wear while competing for the hand of one of the princes.
My stomach answered her with a ravenous roar for food.
“Anne will take you down to the ladies’ dining room for dinner,” she continued to chatter aimlessly . “Tonight’s menu is pizza, garlic bread and salad.”
I didn’t say anything as I padded after Anne, quickly committing the way from my suite to the dining room to memory- go down the hall, then turn left in between the two identical suits of armor, pass by four hallways on the right side and go down the staircase…
I passes by a mirror and look a quick glance at myself- a face full of dark freckles, my normally unruly red curls confined in a loose braid that was lazily draped over one shoulder, and my body was clothed in a simple knee length dress in a stunning pale turquoise color. I wore my mother’s locket, hidden underneath the high neckline of the garment.
“Right here, my lady.” Anne’s smile was welcoming as I nodded at her before entering the bright and cheerful room.
I tapped my mother’s locket for luck before stepping deeper into the ladies’ dining room. Immediately, I had all eyes on me, and my fight or flight instincts started to kick in. A pretty brunette in a bright yellow dress stood up and approached me.
“Come on, you can sit with us,” she offered me in a kind voice, placing her arm around me and directing me over to where some of the other Selected where sitting. She offered me a chair, which I declined before taking a seat on the floor- I never liked sitting in chairs.
“I’m Peggy, and this is my cousin, Sharon.” I looked up, noticing the pretty accent that marked the brunette’s voice, and couldn’t help but smile at the gentle lilt.
“Rosabella,” I meeped timidly- I was on new territory, and so I was treading gingerly.
“So, archery?” Sharon asked me just then, stretching her arms up above her head. “How long have you been shooting for?”
I shot her an incredulous look and was rewarded with a giggle from a tall, leggy blonde.
“Footage of you fighting bandits yesterday was shown on television earlier today,” she explained. “I’m Carol, by the way.”
I took in the way she carried herself, and couldn’t help but think that she had been a soldier in a past life. My thoughts must’ve crossed over my face because she chortled.
“I’m a staff sergeant in the Brooklyn armed forces,” she explained. “I was pulled from active duty when my name was pulled for the Selection.”
Twenty minutes later, I was listening to sisters Gamora and Nebula bickering about apples or bananas when Queen Sarah stood up from where she had been reading and clapped her hands twice.
“Ladies, let us feast!” And with that, servers came out from a door and set trays of food onto the tables before being swarmed by the fifteen chattering and laughing girls.
I took up a plate and began what I should grab a bite of first, contemplating what I wanted to try first, and my hesitation was quickly taken note of.
“Here, try this first!” a bubbly dark haired young woman with glasses urged me. “Pepperoni and olives is the best, as decreed by me!”
I giggled, taking a bite. I chewed before swallowing, picking off the olives before agreeing with her.
“No one ever likes the olives!” she whined before sulking off.
“Sorry about her.” Someone else sidled up next to me. “I’m Jane, that’s Darcy, we’ve been friends since middle school.”
“Hi,” I greeted her, my eyes swiftly taking in the points of entry- all six of the windows, the main doorway and the second door that led to (I assumed) the kitchens. I then began to play a game of what if what if’s, something that I always did whenever I was in a new situation.
What if people stormed the palace with the intension of harming thoses inside the royal walls?
What if the power went out?
What if someone started choking?
What if-
BANG
I yelped in fright before yanking two random girls down underneath the table with me, where we hunkered down.
“Lady Rosabella, the coast is clear,” Carol told me with a humorless chuckle. “That was probably just a car backfiring just outside- there’s no active threat.”
“Right.” I shot the two that I dragged down to safety a sheepish smile before crawling out from underneath the table. “Sorry about that.”
“Hey, you have no reason to apologize,” Carol scolded me, taking me off to the side to resume talking. “You were literally living in a war zone in Wakanda, with needing to kill to survive.”
I squeezed my eyes shut.
I still remembered my first kill.
“In this cruel, unjust world, sometimes, it’s you or the other guy,” she continued to speak as a pretty woman with exotically tanned skin handed us both full plates, although my plate was overflowing with different flavors of food. “Everyone’s seen a brief glimpse of your life in Wakanda when the news announced the arrivals of all the Selected yesterday.”
It was the day after my thirteenth birthday.
“You are so incredibly brave,” Peggy commented with a soft hum, coming to take a seat next to me. “People are already calling you Brave Bow, in correspondence with your superb archery skills.”
He had grabbed a girl of about my age and had a feral look in his eyes as he was turning to leave with her screaming and thrashing in his hands.
“Brave Bow? I like that!” Sharon wandered over. “They’re calling Peggy Agent Carter 007, probably because of her wicked accent!”
I grabbed a cast iron pan before racing after him, fury and protectiveness strong in my heart.
“And they’re referring to Nebula and I as Artimis and Apollo, which make no sense at all!” Gamora piped in. “Artimis is the Greek goddess of the hunt, the moon and archery and Apollo is the Greek god of music, the sun and healings. I have no idea at all where they came up with our names. Also, we’re not twins- Gamora is three years older than I.”
A dozen fierce whacks later and I had met a new friend- Wanda.
I forced myself to breathe- why was I having difficulty doing such a simple task?
I knew her twin brother, Pietro, but had never formally met her face to face until now. She thanked me by form of a teary hug before we both returned to the heart of the village, and I wasn’t aware that the cast iron pan that I had used as a weapon was bloody and dusted with brain matter until I was using it for dinner later on that night.
I was pulled from my thoughts by a hand on my shoulder.
“You are not there anymore,” Queen Sarah murmured gently, squeezing gently. “I will look into a therapist for you while you’re participating in the Selection, okay?”

Steve huffed out an annoyed sigh as he planted his hands onto his hips and looked around him. It was Sunday afternoon, and people had just gotten out from church and were now mingling and chatting idly. He had thought that he would stake out the church, thinking that Johanna would be a regular attendee, only to find that he had been in vain.
“Stevie, I don’t think she wants to be found.”
The king’s only response was to let out an irritated grunt, spinning around a few times with her hands on the back of his head.
“Don’t say that now Buck,” he warned his childhood friend with a low growl. Then he saw the baker’s son- Matthew was his name- hurrying off on his way with an armful of unsold loaves from the day before. “Come along now! I have an idea!”
“Oh woe be me,” Bucky bemoaned playfully as he hurried up after the king, the both of them blending into the crowd.
“Johanna went into his father’s bakery yesterday,” Steve remembered with a hum. “Maybe he knows where she’s hiding out.”
Bucky could only groan softly as he followed close behind- when Steve had a mission in mind, he would complete it no matter what.
The two men kept quiet and were certain to duck away whenever the young man would stop and glance behind him until he finally reached a decrepited building in the poorer parts of Brooklyn. People were out and about in their too small, well worn, patched to the point where it was more patches than clothings.
Bucky looked behind him and saw his friend was dropping coins every so often while staring straight ahead of him.
“Buck, do you think my father knew?” he asked, looking around and then scowling when he realized that Matthew had disappeared.
“It honestly would not surprise me much anyways.”
A woman materialize out of from the empty space between two houses. She was stunning, with long, slim limbs and a slender face with hazel green eyes and a long, thin red braid.
“This Johanna?” Bucky muttered, not taking his eyes off from her.
She overheard him.
“What is your business with her?” She did not phrase her words as a question.
Steve’s hand dove into the pouch on his belt, where he took out a letter between Johanna’s mother and his late father.
My love-
Johanna lost a tooth today. She was eating an apple when she suddenly realized that she must have eaten her tooth. Poor baby was crying at the idea of not receiving a copper from the tooth fairy. Should I tell her that the tooth fairy will still come and pay her a visit regardless of whether or not she had a tooth to trade for coin? You know of how much I hate it when she cries- she is truly your daughter.
The green eyed redhead squinted at the letter before spinning around and vanishing into thin air once more.
“Now what?” Bucky asked, his eyes darting about as his hand tightened on his sword.
“I think we wait,” Steve suggested, leaning up against a closed storefront and turning his attention to the limp crowd of people.

I watched the king and the captain of his guards from my place in the alley right across from them. The young king was a handsome fella, with hair as yellow as a gold coin and eyes as blue as the sky at noontime. He was tall and well built and walked with a certain kingly pride. His captain of the guard was also handsome, although in a rugged type of way with dark waves that brushed his shoulders and a scruff over the lower half of his face. The blond carried a simple knife in the small of his back and the brunet wore a sword at his hip, and I could only figure that both men knew how to work their weapons.
A nudge at my elbow drew my attention to the person standing slightly behind me- Matthew, the son of the baker. He was a few inches past six feet tall, with dark strawberry blond curls and dark green eyes set into a face of tanned skin and expressive lips. His arms were muscular from working in the back of his father’s bakery kneading dough and mixing ingredients to let the dough rise to triple its original size.
Hey, he greeted me, his face soft and gentle. How are you doing?
I snorted, jerking my thumb over towards where the king and his childhood friend were lingering, both clearly waiting for something.
Or rather, someone.
What do they want? Matthew’s nose crinkled as though he had just gotten a noseful of something that reeked.
No idea, I answered. But I kind of don’t want to find out why they’re tailing after me.
And with that, I twirled around and all but disappeared from where I stood, leave Matthew alone.
From where I had whisked myself off to, I saw his chest rumbling with laughter as he shook his head.

THE QUEEN

I stared at myself in the cracked mirror- I couldn’t recognize myself at all. I had done away with my patched jeans and torn gloves for a dark navy blue shirtdress that Wanda had sewn for me the night before instead of sleeping. I ran my hands down the carefully pieced together garment, thankful for her love and support.
“Hey.”
I turned and rushed towards Pietro, embracing my lover as the tears began to fall.
“I’ll see you at the capitol in a couple of days, okay?” Pietro pulled away to cup my face in his hands as I struggled to stop my tears. I nodded silently, leaning in to kiss his cheek. “I love you- now go.” He gently pushed me off towards where I was supposed to ride back to the city with the king and his two sons.
“Don’t do anything stupid,” I told him with a sniffle and a smile.
He scoffed, puffing his chest out in faux arrogance.
“When had I done anything stupid?” he asked me.
“The frog pond,” was all that I said. My smile only grew at the flustered look that took over his face.
“We both agreed never to talk about that!” he yelped, trying to grab for me as I sauntered out of reach, giggling at him.
“I’ll see you in the capitol city!” I laughed at him, getting into the fancy car and immediately sobering at the sight of the three royals trying to stop themselves from smiling at the rare sight of me being happy.
“We ready yet?” I scowled heavily, sinking into the plush, leather seat and folding my arms. “Good- let’s get this show on the road already.”
The king’s smile disappeared at my sudden change of attitude and he tapped on the divider separating us from the driver. The car began the long drive into the capitol, leaving behind everything that I’ve ever known; I only had my small suitcase, which contained all that owned, despite the blond prince’s protests that I would receive all new items at the palace. I had, of course, ignored him as I packed my well-loved toy bunny, which I had owned ever since I was a small infant.
As the motorcade inched its way through the thick woods, I quickly found myself sinking deeper into myself; I couldn’t let my guard down! I forced the heavy scowl to stay on my face, even when I started to feel myself nodding off.
The quiet mumblings of the three royal men pausing their conversation made me jolt wide awake. My hands automatically went for the knives in my sleeves before the blond prince held up his hands in peaceful surrender.
“We’re here,” he announced, taking in the grouchy expression on my face.
“Define here,” I grumbled, wondering if it were legal for me to smack their heads together or if I would end up with shackles chaining my wrists together.
“The capitol,” the brunet- Prince James- told me in a hurry, evidently seeing the irritated look in my eyes.
I sat up more and stretched in a cat before turning to look out the window. I felt my eyes widen as I took in the streets, bustling with people and little shops lining the streets selling all sorts of thing; dresses, food, and even a little pet shop. I wrinkled my nose in distaste at all the luxurious and unnecessary items that people were buying; really, did people here in the capitol city know how to prioritize what they wanted from what they needed and manage money?
“How long was I out for?” I asked, covering a yawn as the car turned into a long, winding driveway.
“Much of the day…?” Prince James said, not flinching at the irritated look that I threw him.
“We’ll let you get settled in and then you can meet the rest of the Selected,” the king said with a comforting smile. I nodded stiffly, my mind still foggy with sleep.
I only grunted in response, settling myself deeper into my seat as I waited for the seemingly never ending car ride to be over.
At long last, the car pulled up to a huge, ornate building; it took me a few seconds to understand that this was the palace.
“You live here?” I asked no one at all, my voice coming out incredulously and higher than normal.
“It’s a bit much, isn’t it?” the blond asked me as the door was opened and a hand appeared.
“That’s one way of putting it…” I grumbled as I batted the hand aside and scrambled out of the car, quickly followed by the two princes and the king.
“Joseph!” a pretty woman with strawberry blonde curls and twinkling blue eyes came forward to kiss the king on the cheek. “How was the journey?”
“There were a few…” Here, the king paused, clearly looking for the right word. “Complications.”
I snorted to myself, gaining the attention of the woman, whose smile diminished slightly at the sight of me. I stood up as tall as I could and held my head high; there was no way that I would act ashamed of my background!
“You must be Lady Rosabella Swan,” she said, coming closer to me as a man began to take my suitcase and quiver from the car. I only nodded at her as I watched him take my things into the palace. “I’m Queen Sarah, my dear; it’s lovely to meet you at last.”
“Likewise,” I couldn’t help but grunt out; I felt truly out of place at this grand home.
“Are you alright, though? My husband told me of the attack on your village; is everyone alright?” My mood turned sour at her seemingly innocent inquiry.
“We had only four casualties on our side; most of the damage was done to the bandits,” I answered in a blunt tone of voice, making it clear that I didn’t want to talk about it. “Do you have any idea as to when everyone else will arrive?”
“Well, mostly everyone has already arrived by now,” the queen answered me with a gentle smile on her face.
“Which is served at seven o’clock on the nose sharp,” butted in the king uninvitedly.
I nodded silently, my mind all in a whirl with plans if what still needed to be done; jobs, housing, childcare…
“Lady Rosabella, you need to come inside and have a bath,” the queen said, pulling me from my thoughts. “Heavens child, when is the last time you had a fresh change of clothes?”
I shrugged my shoulders; aside from my new dress, I honestly didn’t know.
“Oh, never you mind any- we’ll get you nice and pretty for tonight, my dear,” the queen was mothering me, and it kind of felt nice; I never really had a mother to fuss over me, as how my mom was dragged off, raped and then slaughtered when I was only eight years old.
“What’s tomorrow?” I found myself asking.
“Oh, it’s an interview process, my dear; it’s where the palace reporter asks the Selected a few questions about their bringing ups and it’s just so that the people can get to know you ladies better,” she answered, taking me inside and towards an elevator that looked as though it was made of glass.
“Now then, my dear…” the queen said once we were inside the claustrophobic tube and traveling up. “There’s nothing to be scared of, it’s all simply going to be a five minute interview with palace reporter Phil Coulson; five minutes, not a second longer. You’ll have a list of questions which he’ll ask you so that you can prepare and not get caught in something you’re not comfortable with.”
I hummed nervously. “What else can I expect for tonight?”
“A light dinner, and games in the ladies’ room near my personal library, followed by an early bedtime,” she answered, taking in the disbelieved expression on my face.
“You mean libraries actually exist? That they’re not made up like candy shops and zoos?” I asked her, my eyes wide.
She started to chuckle, but realized that the look on my face was dead serious.
“I can show it to you after you’re all cleaned up, if you would like,” she offered me with a small smile as the elevator dinged, the doors opening. Out of instincts, I poked my head out, my hand up for the queen to let me go out first. After checking for danger and deeming it as being safe, I exited first, waving my hand for her to follow me.
“You don’t have to do that, my dear,” she told me. “The palace is very safe.”
“No place is safe until I say it’s safe,” I flat out told her. “Trust me; there were weekly raids from bandits, sometimes they would attack two or three times in a single day. So, you’d have to excuse me for being a little bit jumpy.”
She nodded her head, biting her lip as she came to my name written on a shiny plaque on the left of double doors. She watched as I pushed open the doors, following me inside.
The second I entered, three ladies dressed in pressed uniforms scampered in from a connecting room and curtsied to the both of us.
“Your majesty,” they murmured, straightening themselves back up again to take me in. They all looked rather taken aback at how unruly I looked; wild curls bound into a last minute messy braided crown, a well-loved leather jacket, boots that were held together with strips of duct tape, a dusty face full of freckles and a newly stitched together blue dress. I’m certain that I looked more like a ragamuffin than a lady.
“Oh my sweet dear, come with me; Anne, draw up the bath; Mary, be a dear and go lay out some clean clothes now, won’t you?” The one who spoke was clearly the leader, was smiling kindly at me as she shooed me towards a luxurious bathroom, decorated in shades of white and pale blue and with a light scent of flowers. “Strip, my dear, you can put your clothes in the hamper in the corner.” She pointed off towards where a tall wicker basket was placed. I nodded and began to remove my clothes carefully folding them neatly before placing them into the hamper. The three woman watched me with wide eyes as I finally got down to my underwear and chest wrap.
“Did you injure yourself, my lady?” Mary asked me, her eyes wide with pity as I shook my head, understanding what would make her think such a thing.
“No, we didn’t have the resources for bras, so we had to make due with what all we had,” I answered, grabbing one of my knives from my boot and using it to cut through the bindings. A loud “Ooof” from me and my breasts were free. “See these?” I held up all seven of my knives in one hand. “Don’t even try to pick them up; they’re heavier than they look and they will cut you down to the bone.”
“Question, my lady?” the one called Anne asked me in a meek tone of voice, her tiny voice wavering. “But why are the handles different?”
I held up the knives that I carried at my wrists. “These are close combat knives that I keep at my wrists.” I then held up the four knives that I carried in my boots. “These are throwing knives that I carry in my boots.” Finally, I held up the knife I carries at my back. “And this knife can sever through bone- trust me, I had to do it before.”
Their eyes quickly flew wide open as I shimmied out of my underwear and got into the tub, wincing at the hot water. The second I was in the water, Anne was at my head with a bottle of something.
“It’s shampoo, my lady,” she told me, her soft voice trembling still. I nodded before ducking my head underwater to get everything wet.
I let them fuss over me; it felt nice, being pampered. I could only hope that I looked remotely the same afterwards. The last thing I wanted was for Pietro to not know who I was at first glance.
After the bath, which lasted longer than what I was comfortable with, I was removed and wrapped in a fluffy towel before gently led into the bedroom.
I looked around as the three maids fussed from inside the generously sized closet in one corner. The walls were the prettiest shade of blue, the cream carpet so plush that my feet sank into the carpet, the bed big enough for the entire squadron of my Queen’s Bandits with plenty of space left over.
“Lady Rosabella, what do you think of this one?” I turned my attention onto Mary, who was holding up a very pretty, yet unpractical dress in a pale mellow butter yellow.
“Oh hell no,” I said, eyeing the closetful of dresses.
“Whatever is the matter, Lady Rosabella?” asked Lucy, her sweet smile morphing into a confused frown.
“I am not wearing dresses,” I scowled. “Back in Wakanda, dresses were seen as a status of great wealth; they weren’t exactly practical for everyday life. That, they also made it easy for the bandits to rape you.”
“Yes, but you’re not in Wakanda anymore, my lady,” Lucy said, her voice filled with nothing but kindness. “You are in the palace.”
I sighed, taking in the pretty turquoise fabric.
“I know I’m not; it’s just hard for me to accept the mind frame that I’m in a new, relatively safe place now,” I mumbled, sitting to allow them to fuss over my hair. I didn’t say anything when they asked me about makeup, and they automatically understood that I had no idea how to put it on.
By the time they allowed me to look into a mirror, I couldn’t even recognize myself; the transformation was incredible. My normally frizzy curls were vibrant in color and soft to the touch, my befreckled face was free of dirt and blemishes, but my eyes still held the same haunted sparkle to them, I couldn’t help but notice.
They buttoned and laced me into the dress, which to my surprise was a perfect fit.
“We took what you were wearing and altered this dress to fit you better, my lady,” Mary told me, making me chuckle. When I was presented with shoes, I pouted; I had been wearing the same boots every day for the past seven years; the least I could do was go around barefoot. The head maid, Anne, as she introduced herself, only rolled her eyes at my request, but told me to at least wear socks to keep my callused feet warm in the meantime.
I padded around my room, poking and exploring while Anne, Mary and Lucy chatted quietly to themselves while working on embroidery.

“I’m sorry, your majesty, but I know nothing of her, if she even does exists.”
Steve huffed in annoyance as he walked around the city market, trying to scrounge up leads on Johanna, but people would clam up at the mention of her name.
It was as though she didn’t exist- or people were afraid of her- he didn’t know which it was, and it was driving him mad beyond words.
Steve smiled at a small collection of children who were running around the marketplace, acting rowdy but respectful of others. They accidently plowed into a little girl, a single tear running down her face at her scraped hands; one little boy helped her up while another dusted her off. The girl looked down at her doll, laying on the ground, and burst into a fresh spiral of tears at the sight of it’s arm, barely hanging on by a few meager threads.
And then he saw her.
His little sister.
Johanna.
Hair glinting a fiery red under the sun, she crossed the street, away from him, as she approached the children and took the doll from the bawling girl’s arm. She quickly located a little leather purse tucked inside one of her belt pouches and pulled out what looked to the young king to be a needle and spool of thread. She quickly fixed the doll and smiled down at the little girl, kneeling to present her with the now repaired toy. She was thanked with a joyous squeal of joy and arms thrown around her neck in a gleeful hug.
By the time Steve had crossed the street, she had vanished.
“Who was that girl? The one who fixed your little friend?” he asked the girl, who was busy hugging her doll close to her chest.
“Jojo,” she answered shyly. “She runs with the Den of Thieves most times- she’s nice and sometimes brings us little sweets to eat!”
“Other times, she plays with us!” interjected a lad of about eight or nine years of age. “She is so nice!”
“Yes, she is!” agreed another child, muddied to the point where it was impossible to tell their gender.
The Den of Thieves.
Steve felt a shiver run down his spine- the Den of Thieves was a group of freelance mercenaries for hire that did everything from pickpocketing to espionage. The only other group that made mothers pull their children inside and men to shield women as they passed by was the Court of Assassins; of course, due to their occupation, no one knew who the assassins were. Although technically, the two groups were the same, the Den of Thieves dealt of thieving and the Court of Assassins dealt with murder.
The king thanked the girl, giving her four coppers before rushing off to find his little sister. He found her soon enough- Johanna’s bright copper red colored curls made it easy to find her.
Steve found himself taking in her physical appearance- she was dressed in a faded, dusty blue lace up kirtle and wore her bright scarlet corkscrew curls in a severely tight braided crown. She was exiting the bakery with a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese, and vegetables in a basket, swinging gently on her arm. Her petite body was wrapped in a charcoal grey cloak with the hood half concealing her face, keeping her warm and sheltered from the early October chill. She glanced over at the king, showing him a splotchy red and purple birthmark that covered most of the left side of her face.
One second, she was there in front of Steve, the next moment, she was gone, causing him to scowl before turning around to head back to the castle, giving up on his search- at least for today anyway.
He would try again tomorrow.

My face was blank as I entered the Courtway, and I was immediately brought into another world- a world of crime, sex and espionage.
I ducked just as a throwing knife thudded into the wall directly behind me- had I been within four inches to the right, I would have been killed. I whipped around and glared at Hawkeye, the sharpshooter who had almost killed me.
Careful, I scolded him, my fingers flying fluently. You almost killed me!
Sorry, the deaf man apologized with an apologetic expression on his face. I wasn’t aiming for you- I was aiming for that fly!
He pointed and I followed his line, chuckling at the throwing knife pinning a fly to the wall by a wing.
Nice! I turned to take in the chaos around me- over to the side, Black Widow was swirling a bright green poison in a glass vial, an unreadable expression on her face. Wanda and Pietro came in just then, talking and giggling together as twins often did. Loki was playing with a snake he had tamed and speaking to it in a soft voice as it flicked it’s tongue in and out from it’s mouth. Drax and Groot were both in a playful arm wrestling match, Robert looking on with pride as his adopted son “won” the match. Quill, Gamora and Nebula were all playing a calming game of cards, the prize being four gold coins. Behind them all, little Peter had blended into the darkness, his soft brown eyes taking in the busy mayhem with a certain glee.
A nudge at my shoulder turned out to be Hawkeye, who sent me a crinkling grin.
What all did you find out about the royal family? he asked me next.
The same effect is still in place, I shrugged nonchalantly, picking up on everyone’s attention zinging over to me. The king’s wife is still pregnant, he still dotes over her, the queen is still gardening as a side hobby, the captain of the guard and the grand diplomat are still being incredibly petty towards one another and also apparently, the new king is set to lower taxes significantly.
Black Widow pushed herself off from the wall that she was leaning up against and came over to me, pocketing the vial that she had been handling previously.
Your left eye is twitching, she told me with a tiny smile. Are you okay?
I hesitated.
The king is looking into me for whatever reason. No one could ever lie to Black Widow and get away with it. from what I can tell, he has questions for me about my father.
Ah. Her green eyes crinkled in understandment to the touchy subject.
My father had been an unknown member of the royal family, and had let my mother die during the Great Grass Sickness, which had been coughed by an influx of mosquitoes that had fed off from dead animals the summer previously. I never forgave my father, even though he had gifted my mother with her house, the small herd of goats that I now kept for myself for milk and cheese to sell at market and the books that I kept up on neatly kept shelves.
I clenched my fists as I blinked away the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes.
Why didn’t he help my dying mother?

CHAPTER THREE
THE WRONGLY SELECTED
CHAPTER WORD COUNT: 1290
My night was spent tossing and turning in restless sleep. Pietro kept his arm wrapped around me the entire night, offering me much needed warmth and comfort; I kept kissing his sleeping face as I tried not to cry at the idea of us being separated, even for such a short time.
Daybreak came too quickly for me as I carefully unwrapped Pietro’s arms from around me, replacing my body with my pillow. I smiled down at him as I quickly dressed and left the hut, taking up my bow and quiver of arrows to go check on the watch.
“Morning,” I greeted the sentry, one of the king’s bodyguards who had manfully volunteered to keep the night watch without a second thought.
“Good morning, Lady Rosabella,” he greeted me, trying to stay awake. “How did you sleep last night?”
“I was restless for most of the night; what little sleep I got was in short bursts,” I honestly answered him, my eyes keeping a lookout on the tree line for any suspicious movement. To my relief, the only movement came from the chilly morning breeze. “Breakfast will be served shortly, if you’re hungry.” I patted his shoulder before moving off towards the barn to milk the brown and white village cow.
“Good morning,” I greeted the older man who kept an eye on the cramped barn. He nodded a silent greeting to me, his nose buried in the tattered book that he’d read hundreds, if not thousands of times before. I took up the bucket that was on a hook next to where the cow was tied up and got to work. Much to my joy, there was near a full bucketful of creamy white milk; I knew for a fact that the widowed mother with two young ones would be happy at the extra food for her twin boys.
I lugged the bucket to the kitchen, where the two cooks were already busy at work making the morning meal for everyone. I silently handed over the bucket before standing off to the side to watch them work. One was frying up meat in a pan while the other skimmed the milk, making it drinkable before pouring into milk jugs to be distributed out to the villagers.
“We have more milk than usual,” the cook who had skimmed the milk stated in a flat voice, looking for something to pour the excess milk into.
“Do we have any coffee?” I asked, getting a nod from the other cook. “Let’s keep it for the visitors to put into their coffee then.”
“Good idea, good idea,” muttered the cook, locating a pitcher and pouring the rest of the milk in. I nodded as I began to place the bottles of milk into a crudely constructed wood crate to be dropped off at front doors. I carefully placed the carriers into the wagon that was kept in the kitchen for deliveries and nodding to them.
“I’ll be back,” I said before wheeling the squeaky wagon out of the kitchen.
“Good morning,” greeted the brunet man from the day before, emerging from an otherwise empty hut. I grunted out a reply before he joined me, silently walking with his hands jammed into his pockets. He watched as I knocked on doors, handing out milk with small smiles and little words here and there.
“You care for everyone here, don’t you?” he asked me softly, as though he didn’t want to disturb the silence. I shrugged in response, not really wanting to talk at the early break of dawn. He seemed to guess that I wasn’t a morning talker, and thankfully, he left me alone.
As I cooed over a five month old little boy that one of the women was holding, I saw the prince smiling at me. I shot him an intimidating glare as I straightened up, beginning to wheel the now empty loud wagon back towards the kitchen.
“Why was it me that was Selected?” I suddenly asked, nodding at one of the cooks, who was on his way back inside the kitchen with a basket full of eggs from the tiny henhouse that had a grand population of four scraggly chickens.
The prince shrugged, and I mentally slapped myself.
“Let me rephrase; how was I Selected?” I asked, nodding a good morning to a couple of early stragglers.
“It was a random drawing,” he answered me. “Names were put into a bowl, and Steve and I each Selected seven names- dad choose the fifteenth name, which was you.”
I snorted; of course it would’ve been the king who picked my name.
“I’m James, by the way,” he introduced himself with a short bow of respect to me.
“Charmed,” I said, giving him a tight smile.
Just then, the rooster began to shriek loudly, sending out the wakeup call for the rest of the village to get out of bed and report to the mess hall for breakfast. Within minutes, the fifty- something villagers were up and lined up in a neat row for the morning meal. The king, the blond prince, and their entire entourage were at the back of the line while I joined the rest of the Queen’s Bandits near the front of the line.
“Morning!” Pietro’s twin sister, Wanda greeted me, ever the chipper one in the mornings. I grunted out a response to her as the line moved up. I tapped mom’s locket from luck for the day as the food was distributed amongst us all.
By the time we had our food and coffee, i was halfway awake as opposed to before and in a much better mood. We all stood around as we chatted in between bites of egg and meat burritos, the crude tortillas making my throat itch and burn like something crazy.
“Here they come now,” Sam muttered softly to me, his cheeks huge with food. I didn’t have to turn around to see that he was talking about the king and the two princes, but I did, mainly to see their reaction to my village’s meager breakfast.
The king had an impressive poker face on, but the princes looked shocked at the crude breakfast that the people of Wakanda ate every day.
“We make use of what all we have,” I called out to them, not even bothering to join them. “Trust me- it’s better than nothing.”
The looks on the princes’ faces didn’t change as they took in what I had just told them as I turned back to breakfast with my Queen’s Bandits.

CHAPTER TWO
A MURDERSOME KING
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORESS: Hihi, there, this is Allanna here with an announcement- I will be in Utah for a family funeral from July 17th to 22nd and then I will be at Sa Diego Comic Con from July 24th to 28th, so I won’t post new chapters during those times. So terribly sorry.
CHAPTER WORD COUNT: 1909
“Rosabella Swan?” King Joseph asked me, a tiny twinge of fear in his voice.
“Who wants to know?” I growled as I struggled to free myself from the brothers’ hold on me.
He was obviously taken aback by my rudeness; his mouth opened and closed a few times as he tried to come up with a response. When he was unable to answer, the brunet stepped forwards, a genuine, however fearful smile on his face.
“Lady Rosabella Swan-” he started to say only to be cut off by me.
“If you address me as a lady one more time, I’ll make you into a little squeaky voiced dog chew toy soprano,” I growled at him, my eyes narrowing dangerously.
“Did you just threaten the prince?” asked the man in the fancy suit, his face bright red with apparent anger.
“You’re cute,” I said sarcastically. “That was no threat; that was a simple promise! Learn the difference, won’t you?” Suddenly, he too, looked like a fish out of water. I would’ve laughed if not to the murderer standing right in front of me.
“Rosabella, you need to calm down,” Loki growled into my ear, grunting as I kicked him in the shin, but still holding onto me with a tight grip.
“How can I possibly calm down when the monster who murdered my father is standing in front of me?” I all but screamed as I struggling to fly over to the king and slap him hard enough to make him see stars for several hours.
“Calm down,” Pietro hissed, sharing a look with Sam. Clint quickly made a beeline over in front of me and placed his heavily callused hands onto my shoulders. He knelt in front of me, so that I was looking down at him and looked me square in the eye.
“Rosabella Marie Swan,” he began in a steely voice that made me stop fighting to get out of hold.
Before he could say anything else, a sharp whiz sound made my blood run even colder. One of the sentries cried out in pain, an arrow sticking out of his shoulder.
“Bandits!” I shrieked. “Get everyone inside, NOW!!!”
“Bandits!” da yelled, pushing me inside a house and taking up his longbow and arrows. “Sentries take up your positions!”
And with that, the village quickly fell into an organized chaos. Men and women armed with weapons raced over to the gate, where they fearlessly began to quickly reduce the numbers of bandits that were trying to attack us. I shook off Thor and Loki and sped over to help them, mentally cheering when my arrows flew true and killed someone in the crude camouflage colors.
“Don’t stop until they’ve either fled or are dead!” da bellowed, striking down a bandit with an arrow to the forehead.
“Don’t stop until they’re all dead!” I yelled, the battlefield quickly becoming a matter of life or death. A man, one from our side, fell over dead, an arrow protruding from his chest. I quickly made the sign of the cross before continuing to kill off the heartless murderers. “Leave no survivors!” I yelled out in the panic.
The look on his face terrified me.
A bang from our side made me jump and twist around to see what the living hell the sound was. It was the young brunet man, holding a rifle and shooting down bandits, the look on his face nearly frightening the living hell out of me. The blond shrimp was also helping our side with a long range pistol, effortlessly picking off bandits as they dared to venture towards us all.
Suddenly, it happened.
Within seconds, all the guards who traveled with the king were helping us, killing the bandits as they ventured from the woods nearby the village. More and more bandits fell over, dead or seriously injured. I knew them to commit suicide by cyanide pills when we would try to interrogate them as to what their motive was; we had tried countless times before to get answers from the survivors.
An arrow pierced da through an eye, making immediate contact with his brain, killing him upon contact.
The fight last no more than twenty minutes, yet to me, it seemed to last forever. With the blood pumping in my ears, I picked off the last of the bandits before standing to my full height as to look like I was in control.
He toppled over, dead before he could hit the dirt.
“Dispose of the dead and get the wounded to Dr. Banner and Wanda.” I announced, surprised at how weary my voice sounded. “Now if that’s everything, then I need a nap- right now.”
Pietro came up and me, his hand going to the small of my back as he gently led me up to the little hut that we both shared with the entirety of my Queen’s Bandits; Peter, Thor, Loki, Wanda, Clint, Bruce, Victor and Sam. It was crowded, but we didn’t mind too much.
“Lady Rosabella.”
I groaned and turned to face the king with a deep scowl etched into my face. Both the dark haired and blond young men flanked him, as though protecting him from me.
“Don’t you have a television set?” the king continued on in a calm voice.
I snorted and rolled my eyes at his obvious stupidity.
“Does it actually look like we get a signal all the way out here in the middle of nowhere?” I snapped at him, feeling my face heating up in anger. I opened my mouth to continue bitching at him only to be cut off by the brunet man, who began to take a step towards me only to stop in midstep as I snarled at him.
“Okay, okay, we get it,” he said, his eyes holding nothing but respect and concern for me. All I could do was snort in anger at his attempt to calm me down. “What he was trying to say was that you’ve been Selected.”
“Selected? Selected for what?” I asked in a tired, yet rude voice.
“Last night, fifteen girls were Selected to participate in a reality television show where they try to win my brother or I over,” he explained, his eyes shining with comfort.
“Win you over in what way?” I had a somewhat vague idea of what his answer would be, but I stilled wanted confirmation.
The blond shifted in discomfort, obviously too embarrassed to say the word, so the brunet continued on.
“Win one of us over romantically.”
“No.” my answer was automatic, a harsh sound that made him take a step back. A low chuckle escaped from my mouth as I folded my arms and glared dangerously at the three of them. I continued on in my little tirade. “I’m never going anywhere with such a murdersome king, even if it means that I get to save the world. Besides, I’ve already got a love.”
I wrapped my arm around Pietro’s waist and pulled him in for a kiss.
“You have no choice.” I rolled my eyes at the king, who ignored my disrespectful behavior towards him.
“Rosabella-” Clint warned me, being ever the surrogate father to me. I spun around and glared him in the eyes, my own eye ice cold as flint as I waited for him to speak. “Rosabella Marie Swan, you listen to me right now.” Uh oh, he was using the dad voice. I straightened up and placed my hands behind my back, interlocking my fingers as my stance relaxed. “You will go with them, and the village will follow after shortly.”
“But what will you do once you’re out of this hellhole?” I demanded to know, waving a hand aimlessly around us.
“Shut up kid- I’m still talking here,” he told me, making me zip my lips. “I’m sure there’s work for us in the capitol city somewhere- we’re resourceful- we’ll find some way of scraping by. I’m assuming that there are plenty of jobs in the capitol?” He aimed this question towards the king, who nodded, a fake smile plastered on his face as I noticed for the first time a man with a fancy, yet bulky camera stood off to the side; he was fidgeting with a wire of some kind, clearly somewhat embarrassed at being in the middle of such a personal spat.
“Of course- in fact there are positions in the palace that are open,” he said, the smile on his face faltering the tiniest bit before snapping back into place.
“So what? You’re saying that I should sacrifice my dignity for this village?” I snarled, whirling around and glaring at Clint square in the eye.
He sighed heavily, not breaking eye contact with me.
“Rosabella, please- do it for the community,” he begged, his face tired and haggard.
I huffed in annoyance as I thought about what to do; should I refuse the offer for a better life or should I embrace my newfound life?
“Fine,” I snapped, spinning around to glare at the king. “You win- but I’m staying the night here.”
“Why?” the blond prince asked, his face wrinkling at the look of disbelief I gave him.
I forced myself not to roll my eyes as I answered, “What you just saw out there? The bandits will attack anyone and everyone who travels at night. It doesn’t matter to them if there are a hundred guards who are armed to their teeth- they’ll still pick you off. They know every rock and branch out there, and I’d frankly not get killed, even if it’s for a better life.”
“And you would know because…?” the brunet princes asked, raising an eyebrow at my aggressive tone of voice.
I took a deep breath of air in, forcing myself not to cry.
“I would know,” I answered, my voice soft. “I would know because I watched those bandits brutally slaughter my mother. Right in front of me.”

CHAPTER ONE
POLITICAL CURRUPTIONS
CHAPTER WORD COUNT: 1759
The arrow flew from my bow, quickly and silently making contact with the target, killing the deer instantly. Before the creature had even hit the ground, the Queen’s Bandits had pounced, knives out to cut dinner down to smaller pieces.
“That was a good kill, Rosabella!” Thor was quick to lavishly praise me, a hint of jealously shining in his eyes; his father had been one of the village hunters before he died three years previously due to bandits.
I leaned my bow onto the toe as my boot as I leaned forward, watching my little band of misfits hard at work. For the millionth time, I cursed King Joseph, if he could even be called a king; he had sworn to care for his people, but had neglected my small village by allowing bandits to invade us nearly every other week.
I ducked my head to pick at my threadbare blouse, all but see through due to one too many washings. My boots were no better- practically falling apart, with duct tape wrapped around the ankles and heels, making the sad looking footwear wearable- for the moment being.
I glanced around the dense trees nervously; even though I knew that the eight of us could take down bandits, should they dare to make an appearance, I was still wary out in these dangerous woods.
“Victor, do you think this will be enough for dinner, or should we continue hunting?” I asked quietly, speaking for the first time that day.
The red haired man quickly took inventory of the meat, skins, bones and organs, all which were tucked in heavy duty leather bags to make transportation easier on us all.
“I would get at least one more kill,” he answered with a simple shrug, his voice soft as well, waiting for me to make the call.
I nodded silently before turning, nodding to my close friends, who all quickly fell into line behind me; Sam, with his on the spot sense of humor and heavily tattooed body; Victor with his quick mind and even quick ability to do mathematics in his head on the spot; Thor, with his brutish strength and sweet, easy going nature; Loki with his graceful agility and ambidextrous hands, Pietro with his charming smile and sweet kisses; Peter with his nimble ability to quickly scale trees to keep a lookout for kills and bandits.
And then there was me.
Rosabella Swan.
I was skilled enough with many weapons, my main weapons of choice being deadly close combat and throwing knives and my trusty bow. My ability to skillfully hunt and my general distrust towards all except my Queen’s Bandits made my temper somewhat unpredictable; but what I lacked in social skills, I made up for in being the village sheriff.
“Loki, do you hear anything?” I asked, my voice coming out as a quiet whisper. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw him tilt his head as he closed his eyes for the briefest of moments. His eyes shot open as he quickly took up the lead, taking up deeper into the wood on a heart thumping chase.
At long last, I spied our target, and I loaded my bow with an arrow and got ready to take aim. I breathed in silently before letting the projectile fly. A smirk took over my face as the deer fell, and once more, my Queen’s Bandits got to work.
I watched them work as I slipped back into my thoughts once more; da’s brutal murder still fresh on my mind. The hand that wasn’t holding my bow clenched into a tight fist and I had to stop myself from breathing heavily. My father had sent countless letters to King Joseph, begging for help in defending the village from bandit raids, only to get chirping crickets in response.
The king had da’s blood on his hands; if I should ever meet him, I would deck him and most defiantly break his nose. I honestly didn’t care if assaulting a member of the royal family was certain death, I knew I had to make the king feel what I had felt for the past three years.
He had worked so hard to make the capitol and all the surrounding cities and towns prosperous, so why had he ignored the little village of mine?
I was snapped from my thought by Loki standing in front of me and placing a gentle hand onto my shoulder.
“Are you alright?” he asked me softly, his hand rubbing a comforting circle into my skin. I smiled up at him before pulling away.
“Come on; we should be heading back now,” I called out in a soft voice, avoiding his concerned question. “I don’t feel safe this deep in the woods with bandits running underfoot once the sun goes down.”
“Following right behind you, sheriff,” Pietro said, his easy smile nearly making me swoon at my dark haired lover. I barely managed to stop myself from making doeful heart eyes at him as I turned, a light blush dusting my cheeks as I led the way, my boots silently marching through the underbrush and leaves.
I skillfully followed the subtle X’s that I had marked the trees with to help lead us back to the village, my eyes darting from every tree to every bush; it wouldn’t surprise me if bandits attacked us in the open.
I didn’t like being vulnerable; it only led to certain death around this neck of the country.
Within minutes, we were on the less traveled road that led to the village; I couldn’t help0 but notice fresh tire tracks in the dust.
“Careful, now,” I warned in a soft voice. “I don’t think it’s the bandits, but be sure to keep your guard up!” I’d didn’t have to turn my head to see that everyone was nodding their heads in silent agreement as I slowly led the way towards the only exit into the crudely fortified village.
I was about to round the bend when Thor placed a hand onto my shoulder.
“Wait here; I’ll go check it out,” he breathed into my ear before going first before I could kick up a protest.
Barely even a minute passed before he called out to us.
“It’s safe!” his booming voice nearly making me jump. I was first to go around the bend, where I saw a motorcade was all but blocking to entrance. As we approached, we all couldn’t help but notice a man in an expensive looking suit was arguing with the half dozen sentries who were guarding the village from bandits.
“Look, you going to have to wait for the sheriff to return from hunting,” one of the sentries was saying firmly over the other man’s blusterings, clearly done listening to whatever crap the he was trying to feed the armed sentry. I could only roll my eyes as I marched up to the front of the village with most of the male population of the Queen’s Bandits falling in behind me.
“Sheriff! Welcome back!” a second sentry called out in an annoyed tone of voice. “These blokes are trying to get in… some kind of official business… I’m sorry to say that I tuned them out after they mentioned something about royalty or whatever…”
“You’re the sheriff?” Mr. Fancy Pants asked in shock. “But you’re a girl!”
This made me stop and slowly turn to face him. I drew myself up to my embarrassingly short height before marching straight up to that sonofabitch and staring him directly in the eye.
“I am not a girl, I am a dangerous storm with skin that will destroy you unless you tell me what you Goddamned hillbillies think you’re doing in my village,” I hissed venomously, ignoring everything until Pietro placed his hand onto my shoulder, messaging my skin gently. My hand went up to his as I stared up at the messenger, who was clearly trembling in his spotless shiny boots.
“I’m afraid this is between King Joseph and Miss Rosabella Swan,” he sniffed delicately, making my blood boil at the name of the king.
“It would be a wise choice to state your business,” I growled, not at all amused with the colors that the man’s face was turning. “Right now.” When he didn’t answer, my volatile mood turned even further south. “Turn them away!” I barked before beginning to storm into the village.
The sound of a car door opening caught my attention and my hand went to the knife I carried at my back, my head turning to see who was emerging from the motorcade.
My blood went cold as King Joseph ambled up to the little cluster of people blocking the front of the village.
“You!” I snarled, beginning to charge towards the man who was responsible for my father’s murder; I was stopped by Thor and Loki, each grabbing a hold of my arms as two more men joined the king. I didn’t recognize them; one was a scrawny blond who looked like a gust of wind would blow him over; the second was a well-built man with dark hair that lightly brushed his shoulders.
I laughed bitterly at the shocked expression on everyone’s face.
“What brings such a murdersome king like you to my small village of Wakanda?” I asked with a deep scowl etched into my face.

Summary:
Elsa and Anna Arendelle. Sisters first, best friends forever. Even with Elsa being the one with cryokinesis- the enhanced abilities to control snow, ice and the cold. Struggling to make ends meet with Elsa attending college and Anna finishing up her senior year of high school, they accidently attract the attention of both SHIELD and HYDRA.

“Well, this is home sweet home,” Steve announced to the two sisters as he drove up to Avenger Tower, pausing as he waited for the gate to the underground parking lot to open. “FRIDAY will give you the grand tour once you’re finished getting situated in your apartments.”
Elsa only nodded stiffly, Anna have fallen asleep on her older sister’s shoulder during the car ride. Bucky rode in the passenger seat and Natasha was in the seat next to Anna.
“Tony was forced to leave for a family emergency in Nevada late last night,” Natasha told Elsa before undoing her seat belt and getting out, passing by Steve. “So you won’t meet him until he gets back sometime next week.”
“Do you want me to carry her up?” Steve asked Elsa, reaching into the car for Anna and hoisting her tiny, sick laden frame into his arms. “FRIDAY, lead the way to the Arendell sister’s apartment.”
“Certainly Captain Rogers,” chirped a robotic voice before the floorboards began to light up, signaling the way.
“FRIDAY is Tony’s virtual AI,” he explained, slowing down to allow Elsa to keep up with his long strides. “So handy- she can play songs from my childhood, understands me when I use popular slang from the 40’s, and can recommend books and TV shows that I would like. Again, the future is so handy.”
“Ah,” Elsa hummed, freezing as a tall, well built blond man wearing exotic armor and a fluttering red cape came out of a hallway, saw them and nodded respectfully before going off on his way once more.
“Was that Thor?” Elsa meeped in amazement.
“That was Thor,” Steve confirmed, going up to an elevator, which opened right up for the three of them. “He comes and goes as he pleases though.”
“Wow…” Elsa followed him onto the elevator, FRIDAY sending the three of them up to the sixth floor. “Doesn’t he spend much of his time on Asgard?”
“He bounces back and forth.” Steve came to stop right outside a door, which opened to reveal the sisters’ new home. “Welcome home.”
The front door opened into a TV den that had a comfy looking couch with a glass coffee table in front and a massive bookcase that took over an entire wall. To the left was a kitchen and dining room, all open floor concept. The appliances were new and shiny, the counter tidy and uncluttered, the hardwood floors dust free and clean. The dining room had a small table with a chair on either sides on with a dark blue rug underneath. Windows let in the sunlight and the floor length curtains were a light green and blue checked. To the right of the living room were two bedrooms- both with full sized beds, large sized closets and desks.
“This is wonderful!” Elsa gasped, utterly giddy as Steve gently settled Anna down into her bed before removing her shoes for her. She went back into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator, already making a list as to what groceries she would need to buy.
“You can input the groceries that you need onto the keypad on the outer right side of the refrigerator and someone will go out, purchase what you need and then drop it off.”
Elsa jumped at the feminine robotic voice that sounded out. She closed the doors and sure enough, on the right side was a screen, blipping as it scrolled through random food- boxes of pasta, apples, milk…
“Does the AI system go through the tower?” Elsa wondered as Steve came into the kitchen, his hands jammed into his pockets.
“Yeah pretty much,” he answered her. “Hey listen- I promised Buck that I would be his sparring buddy, so I’ll have to leave you both now, okay?”
“Okay,” Elsa smiled as she walked him out. “I have a chemistry pop quiz that my professor had been hinting at that I want to cram for.”
Steve grinned as he left the apartment, letting the door snap shut behind him. with him gone, Elsa opened the door and poked her head out, seeing two men with dollies packed with the boxes of things from their old apartment.
“Hihi!” Elsa greeted them, letting them in. “Be quiet- my little sister is asleep!”
The men were quiet as they bought in the neatly labeled boxes, stacking them in the TV den in front of the TV, leaving and returning two more times before leaving the young woman to
A soft knock on the half opened door turned out to be a pretty redhead with a long, slender silhouette.
“Hello, Elsa?” she asked in a kind tone of voice before entering. “My name is Pepper Poots, and I’m one of the CEOs of Stark Industries.”
“Hi, how are you?” Elsa shook her offered hand.
“I came with information and paperwork on getting you and you sister onto the team’s medical insurance, is now a good time?” she asked, hugging a clipboard to her chest.
“Uh, sure.” Elsa turned to open a random box. “Is it alright with you if I multitask? I’ve never been good at doing just one singular thing.”
