I’m literati as hell, but as someone who has dated guys like Jess in real life, the abandonment trauma, lack of communication, moodiness, authority issues, past hurt… you cannot love them better. Seriously, they need to work on themselves and go to therapy. It’s so incredibly painful and traumatic and abusive on the other side too. So, I never blame Rory for not taking Jess back when he comes back. It’s so much more complicated in real life. Which is why I’m constantly in my heart, gushing about his development and growth. YES! Jess wasn't ready for a healthy relationship (which he had zero experience with) which is why when shit hit the fan in S3, he didn't know how to handle it. In S4, he still wasn't ready. He was sincerely sorry, really trying, and wanted to be THAT guy for Rory... But he wasn't there yet. S6 Jess on the other hand had clearly figured some of his crap out! If they'd gotten back together in S6 or later, they'd be happily married by now.

THIS! And I loved how in S3, when Lorelai had to sleep over because of the fire, Jess no longer needed the music. Meaning that living with Luke, he finally felt safe 🥰.
