☕ also any new cordelia opinions chief?
hmm ok well this is not a new opinion nor one i've never discussed before but it is one i haven't discussed too recently which is that i really strongly object to the idea that ats s3 represents some kind of defanging or assassination or *rolls eyes* "buffy-ification" of cordelia's character. (sanctification yes because she quite literally becomes a saint in the historical 'badass martyr for a cause' sense of the word, that's her character arc. buffyfication no.)
my most generous reading of this criticism is that the people who make it are distracted by cordelia's hair in the back half of ats s3 which is admittedly terrible and does not suit her. my ungenerous reading is that the people who say this are uninterested in cordelia as a character and are angry that the show dared to portray angel as loving her romantically and so they halfheartedly grasp for reasons to hate the storyline instead of just saying it's not to their shipping tastes. but there is quite a clear throughline between ats s1 cordelia -> ats s2 cordelia -> ats s3 cordelia including even her continued questionable hair choices. she does not become Just Like Buffy (nor, i should note, does angel only become interested in her when she dyes her hair blonde; witw is maybe the most cangel episode of the season and her hair is at her darkest in that ep). buffy is strongly ideologically against killing humans; cordelia has literally no problem with angel killing holtz and in fact tells him to do so. buffy's arc when ats s3 was airing was about overcoming her suicidal depression and desire to curl back up in her coffin and leave the pain of the world behind, and learning to meet the world with joy; cordelia's arc is about the fact that she already loves life and worldly pleasures and shoes and clothes and money and her friends and she still gives it all up to become a higher being because she believes it's the right thing to do. they want opposite things and learn different lessons. their narrative roles are not the same. cordelia is blunt and honest and frank with angel and holds him to account where buffy often let him get away with things; on the other hand, i cannot imagine buffy being as forgiving of connor, nor as insistent that angel tell him the truth all the time. i'm not saying this to do a buffy vs. cordelia thing i'm just saying they are not the same simply because they are both heroic women.
nor is cordelia not herself simply because she makes different choices in the admittedly not-great episode "tomorrow" than she would have in "city of." wesley too is much changed but you don't see people alleging that he was assassinated even though his biggest character change is far more abrupt (for legitimate reasons, to be sure). cordelia was already the heart of the team in s2, and her values and approach to problems stays consistent in s3's back half. in one of my favorite moments of the s3 finale, which again is not the best episode as a whole, cordelia after an entire season of denying her feelings for angel realizes and accepts she is in love with him and what does she do but immediately call him up and tell him they should meet up and talk about their feelings. who does that? who has the brazen self-assured confidence to do that? cordelia chase that's who. your fave could never. unless your fave is cordelia chase and then i guess she could. because she did. anyway stream ats s3 it has problems but cordelia chase is not one of them

ANGEL (1999-2004): ↪ 3.01 “Heartthrob”
OOOOUHHHDHDHD THE CANGEL ‘do you ever think about it’ ‘all the time’ I will kill myself.
“There's a kind of head canon I've developed about the idea of Cangel and how, like, I think Cordelia and Angel would have worked as a couple [re: Angel's curse] because I think--”
“So you're speaking specifically of—my objection has been Angel can't have a romance because it's damned if he doesn't turn evil, because the person that he's with is like ‘Wait, you're not evil??? I don't make you perfectly happy??? D': — or he turns evil.”
“And my counter to that is Angel only turned evil in season two of Buffy because he didn't know that the curse was a thing.”
“Interesting.”
“Angel with the knowledge—with the person he is and the character he has—knowing that he could go evil is that thorn in his conscience that could never let himself be content, and be happy, and actually achieve perfect happiness.”
“I like that. One of the necessities of perfect happiness is the ability to feel safe.”
“Yeah. Uh, like, safe and content and not in fear. So, in my opinion, like the only way for him to become Angelus again, it requires some sort of mind mojo that would make him forget that fact. And that is—I think that's kind of what we see happen in the season four arc when he does; when they take his soul away. Because not only does that arc require an entire hallucinated sequence of every loose end in the season, and in the character arcs coming down in a way that stops hurting him. But also with an entire hallucination sequence, it would be a relatively minor edit to, like, make that detail drop out of his mind as part of that.”
“Yeah. No, I like that.”
“So that spell works by that same thing. But on the other hand, the fact that if he knows it, there's a part of him that can never be happy. Even if he finds some happiness, there's no way he could be perfectly content and happy."
“So, one thing he didn't have in Buffy season two was— all he had was Buffy. There wasn't this world of responsibility. There wasn't the team to manage. There wasn't the company to run. And so it was sort of… easier to sink into that being his reality entirely. And, uh, his life is significantly more complex [in Angel the Series]. So I think that tracks. But, no, I like the idea of safety as a necessity for perfect happiness. And how can he feel safe ever if this [losing his soul] is going to be a thing."

Y'know, I wish we got to see the bit where Angel tells the Scooby Gang that Cordelia died. And if anyone made a crack about Cordy (in some kind of misguided attempt to lighten the mood), Angel would have calmly stated that, of everyone present, Cordelia — normal human being Cordelia — took on the physical strain of receiving visions so Angel and co. could continue helping the helpless, to the point she was suffering incredible pain and not telling people about it, and then willingly asked to become half demon, not knowing that through that choice her body would be exploited by a monstrous deity whose passage into this world landed her in a coma, and she never once woke up from it, and she could have Not Done That because she was very literally the queen of an entire realm and had a handsome and noble half demon who adored and respected her and was willing to take on the burden for her, so yeah, Angel misses her
