âShit.â
Serena abruptly stops walking, pressing her palm to her forehead as it throbs. Sheâs been having constant headaches lately that both she and her doctor cannot figure out. Whatâs more troubling, however, are the voices that accompany this pain. The redhead is trying to figure this out when she must suddenly open her eyes as the table that sheâd been leaning against shoots out from under her hand. Quickly, Serena looks over to Wade, making sure that he was seeing this, too. âWhat the hell was that?â
âSerena, I love you. I love you. I love you. Do you think thatâs easy for me to say?â
âItâs not something I can turn off. The past few weeks⊠great and everything. But I stand here, loving you. Really, really loving you and I canât help but feel⊠Serena, you still love him. You donât love me. What am I doing here?â
At the statement, Serena blinks. Of course theyâve told each other that they love each other plenty of times. Theyâve been saying it for years. âEllie, of course I love you...â She feels like the wind has been knocked out of her -- first from bewilderment, then from Ellieâs statement. You still love him. No, no. She canât think about that. Thatâs not even an option. âEllie...what brought this on? What are you talking about? Why are you saying this?â
âOkay, Iâm tired of this. You keep⊠Youâre stringing me alone, Serena. This isnât right and you know it. Iâm fucking tired of it. Just say it. Iâm not going to compare to him. Say it.â
Serena blinks, turning and looking at Ellie with bewildered eyes. âWhat the hell are you talking about?â This is sudden. Out of the blue. What did she do to make Ellie so angry?

"You're adorable."
A light chuckle left her lips as her finger ran down Serenaâs cheek. "Serena, itâs morning. Weâve got quite an important day ahead of us." Nodding her head, she pulled the sheet over their heads and she quickly pressed her lips against her best friendâs cheek. Best friend? Lovers? What she would define them right now, she wasnât quite sure⊠but hopefully it was definitely something more. "As much as I love your groggy morning face, Iâd love to see a smile spread across with your eyes wide with wonder.â Licking her lips, she pulls the sheet from their faces and sits up on the bed. "Am I going to have to kiss you awake?"Â
"Ugh." That's Serena's immediate reaction upon waking up, sighing into her pillow and closing her eyes tighter. Waking up happy is not one of her talents. Her eyelashes flutter as lips touch her cheeks, but she just mutters something unintelligible and hugs her pillow. "'S too early for wonder." She murmurs, then sighs and yawns before rolling over and looking up at Ellie. "Five more minutes?" She asks, hoping her expression is piteous enough to be granted her wish.
"Well, um, Merry Christmas."
Serena speaks into a phone as she drums her foot on the floor, looking at the card in her hand. "Wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. With Love, the Lockhart Family". She looks at the picture of the three of them at Quinn's wedding and frowns, just giving up and hanging up the phone. They hadn't answered, but she'd known they wouldn't -- they were at church. That's why she'd called when she had. Now, she huffs a sigh and stands, turning to leave the room, only to run straight into someone. Stepping back, she blinks, taking in the face above her. "...Hey." She manages, then, remembering her manners: "Merry Christmas." Serena gives a small, somewhat awkard smile before clearing her throat and looking down.
"We need to do something."
Serena states this as she flops into the couch beside her curly-haired friend. "I mean, look around. Everyone is fucking miserable in this hellhole." She gestures around, as if sulking faces lie about, though they're in an empty sitting room. "The gloom and doom have become too much." The redhead nods gravely before clapping her hands. "So! I've decided a Christmas party should happen. Hosted by yours truly, because honestly, nobody else would be acceptable. Though I hardly think you'd make a decent party planner, I don't doubt that you'd struggle to get word spread under the radar." She sits back, raises an eyebrow. "Thoughts?"
"Morning, sunshine."
In the end, Ellie had told herself that she was indeed happy to just be beside her friend and wait as she sorted things out. For a few moments, the two of them stood there in silence until Serena turned around and crashed her lips against hers. Immediately her stomach flipped, her lips burning at the touch of Serenaâs. Ellie knew that she shouldnât be doing this â that her best friend was in a vulnerable place and that she should pull away, she should stop. But she couldnât. Instead, her hands wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer, feeling the warmth radiate from her body. As the kiss deepens, sheâs almost sure that Serena could hear her heart beat at a million miles per hour, the pure rush of adrenaline coursing through her body. She was enjoying this, every moment. Even though she knew the guilt would settle in. Slowly, she pulls away from Serena, a breath of air shakily leaving her mouth as she lightly brushes her lips against the red headâs. Bliss, pure and utter bliss. âSerenaâŠâ she starts, closing her eyes as she rests her forehead onto the other. âYou are a beautiful, amazing, incredibly woman.â I love you, I want to be with you. Letâs do it. Run away. The two of us, together. It was such a silly notion and Ellie almost laughed at herself. She couldnât help but wonder what it was about Serena that caused her to become this⊠different person. Herself, maybe. âI donât want to make things complicated for you.â Because she didnât. She did, but she didnât. Her happiness went above all. âThat?â Laughing lightly, she let out another slow breath of air and pulls away from her forehead. Her hand reached up to her cheek, a small smile on her face. The only kind of smile that Serena saw â the genuine kind. âWas amazing. And I â I want that. I do. I wonât lie to you. I want you. I want to be with you. But, but do you want that, too? Truly?â Licking her lips, her smile falls as she turns away from her friend, pulling her entire body away from her a few inches. Looking out into the ocean, she laces her fingers with Serenaâs. âSeeing you happy makes me happy. Thatâs all I want.âÂ
As she kisses Ellie, all she can do is breathe. She's good at not thinking, good at shutting down. So she doesn't think, besides her repetivie mantra: Someone loves you. Someone loves you. That's all she needs. She needs to matter, damn it, and if this means she does, then so be it. She's loved. When Ellie pulls away, though, that's when it starts to go downhill. As soon as Ellie speaks, her eyes close, and she allows the other girl to press her forehead against hers. Her eyes stay closed as she's paid compliments, her heartbeat throbbing in her ears. Don't think. She tells herself, but her eyes open as a hand presses against her cheek. She listens, but she doesn't register. She doesn't let it sink in. As her hand is grabbed and Ellie keeps speaking, Serena finally exhales and presses two fingers of her free hand against Ellie's lips. "Shhhh." She whispers, giving a smile that she knows for a fact could make anyone fall silent. "Stop thinking." She sighs out on a breath, a curve on her lips and a light in her eyes before she pulls Ellie to her again, her fingers lacing into the other girl's hair. This is solving everything. This is fine. She just can't think, and she'll stay above water. She won't drown today, She just needs to know that she has this person. She doesn't want to think about anything else.
"I'm d-done."
The clapping shocked Clay, but hearing Serenaâs voice, he shrugged and laughed softly. He looked at the broken phone in his hands and shrugged. "Th-thanks. W-why are you o-out and a-about right n-now?" At the question, he chewed his lip. "They threatened m-me again a-and after m-my last encounter with M-Montegomery, I r-realized Iâm n-not powerless. I-Iâm not the w-worthless one. Th-they are. I-if they werenât, th-they wouldnât h-have needed me." It had been a slow realization that Ellie had sparked and his time with Reagan had cemented. He looked at Serena softly. "H-how are you?"Â
Serena gives a soft smile when Clay laughs, then pours more creamer into her coffee. "Eh. Studying. Didnt prioritize well enough. I'm glad I got to see that, though." She replies over her shoulder, before she turns, sipping from her mug. She's listening, nodding at first, but then her smile wavers. Montgomery. It's so easy to forget that her best friend (girlfriend? Oh, no. Not ready to cross that bridge.) may not be as saint like around others than she is around Serena. "Well. Congrats. Quite the realization." She raises her coffee mug before taking another sip. "Me? I'm fine. Doing well." Is she? She's not sure. She's broken up with her boyfriend, consumed too much alcohol, and kissed her best friend. All in a matter of whirlwind days. But she won't acknowledge all of that unless she has to. "Yeah. Doing well. Shall we celebrate your victory, then? I'm sure I could find a drink or something somewhere."

"Morning, sunshine."
Ellie had never been known to hold things back â even with Serena. She always had told her things straight up: If her hair looked horrible, if her breath smelled, and when she was being too hard on herself. It just⊠Why waste her time with the menial things when she knew their friendship was going to last no matter what? It didnât make sense. Of course Ellie was going to be honest. Serena was the only person she was honest with. Hell, she wasnât even fucking honest with herself. âBecause I love you, thatâs why. Because weâre best friends. Because youâre my other half. Because whatâs you is me, Serena. Of course Iâm going to stick around. I knew we were going to be in it for the long haul the moment I met you.â Pulling her gaze up from the ground, she met Serenaâs and didnât dare to let it go. Honestly, sheâd go the ends of the world for Serena Lockhart. Sheâd turn water into wine, rock into diamonds, and silver into gold. Move mountains. Give her the sun. But⊠why waste her time when the girl was obviously heartbroken over the love of her life? Ellie could settle; she could spend the rest of her days by Serenaâs side as her best friend. Even if it meant watching her love another person, that was something she was willing to endure. Tucking in a piece of stray hair behind her ear as the two of them walked out, she let out a light sigh. âThereâs this rocky beach I discovered a few days ago.â Ellie explained, taking Serenaâs hand into hers as she pulls her to the side, walking quickly. Was it so bad to want to hold it? She wanted so bad to feel the warmth of her body, to feel her pressed against her. Her lips on hers. There was so much Ellie wanted, yet she was satisfied with holding her hand. With being by her side. This was worth it, right? There could be no world without Serena â she wouldnât allow it. âThe rocks go a ways out from the shore to the beach. It feels like you standing on the ocean. Itâs beautiful. Like you.â Without looking backward, she made a quick right away from people and then replicated someoneâs ability of teleportation. In a momentâs notice, the two were on the rocks that she had said, standing right at the edge. âDonât fall.â Grasping her hand tighter, she pulled Serena in closer to her. âItâs beautiful, right?â Brown eyes moved around the scenery, a light smile on her face as she slowly let go of Serenaâs hand, instantly regretting her decision to. The waves broke and spread their waters swiftly over the rocks. One after another they massed themselves up and fell back into the white foam, as if conducting a dance for the two of them. âI came here the other day to think, to sort things out. I know⊠I know itâs been hard, Serena. With everything, absolutely everything. And Iâm sorry that I added to that. But instead of drinking your problems away like the trashy Woodsen, sit here. Listen to the waves. Stare out into the ocean. Collect yourself, find yourself. Cry, scream, shout. Whatever you need to do, do it. Iâll be right beside you if you need me. Iâll always be right here.âÂ
Because I love you. Serena can understand almost everything about Ellie. Why she likes her skirts hemmed a certain way. Why one side of her hair is sometimes straighter than the other. Why she likes cinnamon on her hot chocolate. But despite everything, Serena can never bring herself to understand how the hell Ellie manages to put her emotions upfront so fearlessly. Meanwhile, she is slipping into stormy waters. In it for the long run. "Of course." She nods before sliding away. Once she emerges, they are right off to their destination. "Sounds nice..." She murmurs after her friend's description, though her voice dwindles as she receives a compliment. Usually, she'd grin, dimples flaring, and give some sort of self-absorbed comeback. But her defenses have fallen, and she's drowning in the waters. Her protective walls have slipped away, leaving her a victim of the elements. She focuses on keeping her head above water, inhaling as she is sent into a whirlwind. Her feet land upon jagged rocks and the only reason that she is not tumbling over the edge is because of the hand that she's anchored to. Momentarily, she clings to her friend, then exhales and reinstalls their distance from one another. She angles herself away, looking to the water, trying to inhale. And then it becomes easier. I know it's been hard. And suddenly she can breathe again. Here. Here is someone who understands. Who will consider her. Who takes her seriously. Someone who cares. Had Serena always been this stupid? This blind? I'll always be right here. In the past, she would've tossed the comment away in disbelief. Everyone left in some way, shape, or form. They all did. But this time is different. This time, for perhaps the first time, Serena believes. Ellie is different. Ellie is here. And so, among the salt in the air and the waves of the sea, Serena cups her friend's cheeks and kisses her hard. She closes her eyes, holds her breath, counts the seconds, and tries to convince herself that she is loved.
"I'm d-done."
Resolution is a strange tone for Claytonâs voice to carry. Heâs spoken in resignation many a time. But now, heâs made up his mind, hand gripping the cellphone tight to his ear, listening to a familiar diatribe on the other end. But he makes no motion that heâs affected. Just repeats himself. "I s-said Iâm d-done. No m-more. I have a l-lot to be afraid of. B-but you two are n-no longer going to be on that list. I-is that so? Please, I i-invite you to t-try." The phone is snapped shut and then broken in half. "That w-was damn s-satisfying."Â
Peeking her head out of the door, Serena determines that the coast is clear before she steps out of her dorm room and into the hall. She may still be wearing the dress that she'd worn out with Ellie earlier, but the makeup has been wiped from her face, and she has tired eyes and messy hair. If only she hadn't left this project for the last minute thanks to all of her drinking lately, then she wouldn't have to take this Mission Impossible trip to the kitchen in the middle of the night for coffee... Her complaining inner monologue stops when she hears a voice. At first, she freezes and ducks into a corner, hiding. But then, she recognizes the voice, though it's a much different tone than usual. Emerging from her hiding place, Serena is only there to hear a small bit before the phone is promptly broken. With a slight smile, the redhead takes up applause. "Well, damn." She says in the way of a compliment. Entering the kitchen, she begins to pour herself a cup of coffee. She's sure she knows just who Clayton had been talking to. She'd had a similar conversation not so long ago. If only hers had been so satisfying. "Congratulations." Serena tosses over her shoulder as she pours creamer into her cup before turning back around. "What's the occasion, may I ask? Finally reached your limit?" Again: she could sympathize. Sipping her coffee, Serena perches on the kitchen counter.
Blue Skies || Noah and the Whale
This is the last song that I write while still in love with you This is the last song that I write while youâre even on my mind âcause itâs time to leave those feelings behind
"Morning, sunshine."
"Ah, not every night. Just the nights where you feel like drinking away your problems help with everything, correct?â Problem. That was exactly what Ellie was causing things to be between the two of them and she didnât want that. The last thing she wanted, that she could ever want was for her to lose her best friend. Not in any lifetime, no. âIf you were a Woodsen, I probably would have shoved you through a wall by now. Especially Genevieve â Ugh.â Shaking her head and shivering at the thought of befriending that hooligan, she shook her head and sighed heavily as Serena left the room. Alone with her thoughts once again; half of her just wanted to throw herself at her best friend and let everything justâŠÂ happen. Then there was the extremely logical side of her that told her sheâd be a fucking mess if that happened. The both of them. It wasnât the right time - maybe it never would be. Turning as Serena announced she was done, Ellie licked her lips and nodded her head. âOf course you gorgeous little â ugh, how do you look good all the time? Even when hung over? I could kiss you right now.â Pausing after her last statement, she shrugged her shoulders and tossed her a pair of shoes. âLetâs go. Weâre going into town.â
Serena doesn't reply to Ellie's statement, but her eyes lift, expression flickering enough to show that the comment hurt. She hates how well Ellie could read her at times. If she doesn't want to acknowledge her feelings, she certainly doesn't want Ellie doing it for her. "I'm sure you would have. Don't worry. I don't have a single bit of legacy tied to my name, let alone enough to be a Woodsen. Makes me wonder why you stick around." She manages to toss over her shoulder before stepping into the bathroom. Once she looks bright-eyed and bushy-tailed enough, she emerges, walking back into the room on bare feet. Inclining her eyebrow as her friend speaks, she blinks at the final comment. I could kiss you right now. Serena's lips open, then close. No, she can't say what she wants to. It'd be a challenge she knew Ellie would rise to take: Then why don't you? She doesn't know if she's ready for that. She knows she's holding things back: feelings about Wade, about Ellie, about her grandparents. Kissing Ellie again would cause walls and barriers to come crashing down. No, she's definitely not ready for that. Serena just shakes her head, smoothing a hand over her scalp before sliding her feet into the heels she was provided with. "And what are we going there for?" She questions as she exits her room. Passing a window makes her wince, and she raises her hand. Clouds begin to slink acros the sky, blocking the sun. The last thing she wants to do is go out in public right now. But if she wants to keep up her image, she has to go. And she'd never risk ruining her image.
She's my best friend.

"Morning, sunshine."
"What do you think Iâm doing here?" She replies to her question with the harsh tone that was known for the girl. Turning towards Serena, however, Ellie sported a light smile and she looked down. Shaking her head, she looked back up and moved to the tray of food onto Serenaâs lap. "Iâm feeding you breakfast, because god knows what the hell you would have eaten with you looking like that.â Rolling her eyes, she moves towards the girlâs closet and beings to pick out an outfit, not bothering to look back to see if Serena had even taken a bite of the food. She probably didnât. âEat some of the toast at least, you need food in you. What the hell have you been doing? Getting drunk off your ass every night? Thatâs such a Woodsen-esque thing to do. Puke.â Pulling out a champagne t-shirt style dress by Alexander Wang, she turned and held it up to Serena, nodding her head in approval. âThis will do, with, hmmâŠ.â Pulling out a skinny brown belt, she started to move towards Serena. âEat, get dress â oh, where did I put itâŠâ Pulling out make up removers and face fresher wipes, she handed placed them on the edge of the bed. âLight make up, dear. And do something with your hair⊠It looks horrible.â
{Serena sighs at her friend's tone, sitting up a bit more and sliding the blanket away from her face. As she looks at the tray, she can't help but let her nose wrinkle, the thought of food making her want to be sick.} Not every night. {She replies in a lame attempt at defense, frowning.} And I'm certainly not Woodsen. {All the same, she takes a bite of the toast, swallowing hard. She's almost glad to take the dress and wipes -- it gives her something to do other than eat.} Always so kind. {She manages some attempt at snark before going to the bathroom. She winces as the light turns on, blinking a few times and cringing once more as she sees her reflection. Well, Ellie certainly had a point. She wipes all smeared remains of makeup from her face and takes a brush back through her hair before changing, fastening the belt tight around her waist and pulling her hair into a bun. With a bit of blush and a light line of eyeliner and mascara, she's nearly herself again. Adding a touch of lip gloss, she forces her reflection to give a smile before stepping out of the bathroom, feet bare.} Better?
"Morning, sunshine."
A light smile brushed upon her lips as she placed the tray of a simple breakfast on the nightstand beside Serenaâs bed. Whole wheat toast with light jelly, egg whites scrambled with vegetables and freshly cut fruit with a light drizzle of stevia and orange juice on the side; it was what Ellie believed to be the best breakfast for anyone. Fruits, protein, vegetables - a great way to jump start the day. âPink daisy because it reminded me of you, Serena.â Moving towards the curtain, she pushed them open as brown eyes moved towards the redhead. âSo, how are you doing?â Ellie asked simply, as if she had just seen Serena the day before and they were the best of friends - no. It had been⊠quite a while. Almost three weeks, in fact, since the two of them had spoken a word to each other. Time, she thought. Space was what she thought Serena needed. And there was a strong possibility she was right; wasnât she always?
{If I look anything like I feel, I'm fucked. That's Serena's second thought, after acknowledging just how badly her head is throbbing. And she's sure she looks like hell. Her hair is tangled, her eyes burn. And, for god's sake, she's wearing a tank top and sweatpants. Sweatpants. Sighing heavily into the pillow she's planted her face into, Serena rakes a hand through her hair before rolling over and tugging the blanket down slightly. Only bloodshot hazel eyes and a red nose skim over the edge of the quilt. Despite Ellie's questions and obvious advances, Serena only utters one thing, her voice a rasp.} W-What are you doing here?
